May 21, 200817 yr These places are amazing... It really makes you wonder how self-sufficient these little towns were back in the day. It's depressing to look at them now and realize that they will probably never come back.
May 21, 200817 yr Nice! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 21, 200817 yr Wow! Shawnee looks like a barely-surviving ghost town, and the fire truck looks like about 1950 and not in very good shape at that. Decrepit fire department and neglected wood buildings crammed shoulder-to-shoulder -- see it while you can, because one fire, and the whole place will be gone.
May 21, 200817 yr Shawnee is a rare architectural diamond in the rough-an entire historic town almost frozen in time. It was especially sad to see the architectural salvage (turned columns etc.) taken from the town's homes, for sale in the last photo. I'm afraid if there isn't some serious investment in stabilizing this little town there's a real risk of it disappearing before too long. Haydenville, obviously like Shawnee, (and many Ohio towns) had a booming ceramics/pottery industry in the past. The local products were cleverly integrated into the town's architecture creating a unique streetscape. I've got to find some time (and $$$) to visit these places soon. Thanks for sharing, this was a great set. John S.
May 21, 200817 yr The local tourism bureau, Discover Ohio, simply blows. Not only do they not have an interactive map, but the layout is simply atrocious and does nothing or less to promote the great things in this state. They should just hotlink to UrbanOhio. I won't even get started on Experience Columbus, although their last promotional video was pretty good, though still aimed for the lite-jazz demographic. This town, regardless of its condition, warrants mention due to being so distinct. I've looked at every Ohio town that is on this site (I think) and I think we can agree that there's nothing else like it. An UrbanOhio outing and Youtubing of the town couldn't hurt. And Nelsonville is close by, unless we'd want to check out more depressed small towns.
May 21, 200817 yr The main street architecture reminds me of a lot of the old west towns out in California.
May 22, 200817 yr Wow! Shawnee looks like a barely-surviving ghost town, and the fire truck looks like about 1950 and not in very good shape at that. Decrepit fire department and neglected wood buildings crammed shoulder-to-shoulder -- see it while you can, because one fire, and the whole place will be gone. I had the same feeling too, I kept asking myself "is this a ghost town"?
May 22, 200817 yr They actually had a fire station with what looked like a couple of trucks, and I assume volunteer firefighters hanging out front.
