Posted May 21, 200817 yr I have three job interviews this week and next in Cinci, and I've filed many more applications up there, so things are looking up on my end for once. With that said, I don't want to rush into finding an apartment or be stuck in a bad location, so I'm calling out for a little bit of help. I'd like to live in downtown Cinci, or in the Newport-Covington urban fabric, or perhaps a little closer to Xavier. My rent cap is around $1,000/month, and I'd prefer to find something that is one-bedroom, although an efficiency is fine. Lofts are great, so are new (or newer) units. I am looking around online but I vaguely recall a loft conversion project near P&G in DT Cinci that had reasonable rates -- Randy, do you recall what that was?

It was pretty underwhelming when you consider how much she was paying for rent and parking. Oh; a few years ago I was looking at it online and it was like 700/month for a 1bdroom I think. I remember thinking it seemed like a good deal. Seeing a place online and living there are two separate things though. The roof deck is probably a big selling point.

May 27, 200817 yr I looked at 4th and Plum when considering a move to downtown and was very disappointed. I think there far better places to rent for that price. A friend of mine just leased a 1 bedroom for around 800 at Shillito and the units substantially more attractive than 4th and Plum.
May 27, 200817 yr I think I called about Shillito and it was booked. I left my list of places in my bag in the car. I'm looking at the managed units for now, and will probably get a hotel room for 1 or 2 days and do a roundabout tour of many of the other places later.

You might also want to call the Shillito back and ask if they have a studio, if they do ... go look at it anyway! The studios are pretty large and usually have an "L" shaped floor plan which make it very easy to separate into a 1 BR. The Shillito's amenities are unmatched! I can give you personal experiences if you're interested!
May 29, 200817 yr I should have two job offers by Friday or early next week, and if they are acceptable, then I'd move down by mid-June. I checked out 4th and Plum and it was underwhelming, especially for the price. The parking structure on the SE corner was converted into lofts, but this was done in the 1980s and not much has been done to update it since. Many 80s decor in the units, and the ones that have more contemporary countertops and new appliances command much more money. The concrete-ness of the former garage was also a little too cold for me. The skywalk to the second building on the SW corner features ~25 ft. ceilings and is a little nicer, but still too 1980s. I also checked out the Biltmore on W. 4th, and for $695 for 2 bedrooms, living room, a tiled floor in the kitchen, new carpeting, bar, and newer appliances... I will most likely snatch this one up :) Stay away SF!! It's also near the Cincinnati Preservation thingamig-place that Randy probably hangs out in front of daily, and near bakeries and cafes, so it's a big plus for me. I also checked out Sycamore Place and LOVED it. Old factory + tall ceilings with new capreting, appliances and countertops, bathrooms and all... with a great price. Too bad they won't have any open until July. when are you moving SF?
June 1, 200817 yr Damn you seicer! Damn you! haha. Man, I wish I knew of that place but oh well. 600 hundred is way too much for me. But if you want a roommate to live there, i'd be game. It would be really nice too because I think I could seriously stumble out the front door and be at work. I haven't really looked for a new place yet either except online. I did visit two locations I was interested in (just the neighborhood, did not go in) and one, well, I don't think I would have ever felt safe there. The other could have been doable. We came VERY close to the Marx Cromer Lofts in Covington (9th and Manomouth) because their 55 units were all new and VERY nice. One unit was $795/mo. + util, but when I came to check on it the next day, it had rented out. The only other remaining unit was $1,100 and it was very spacious, however, it was a tad over my budget. The Emory, while not as pricey, was only $750 for a studio loft, with three cavernous walk-in closets, huge bathroom and kitchen, and a spacious living room. It has like 25 ft.+ ceilings with 3/4 of the ceiling being one gigantic skylight (I am on the sixth floor), secure parking and the like. And they have recycling bins. Bonus! I know that Pepsiguy was looking also, but here is my advice: downtown and OTR units that are affordable (<$1,000) are currently very much in short supply. One of the primary developers down there has over 400 units they manage, and only FOUR are available (now three...). Another developer had only a handful out of over 200 total. Now, 4th and Plum has many available, but many units haven't been updated in 30 years. You pay extra for a slightly upgraded unit. And the building was a former parking garage, so instead of exposed brick and the like, you get... concrete. Everywhere. Check Craigslist for many available units. I didn't have that much time to check many of those out, so I stuck with managed units for now.

This doesn't really matter, but just to clarify for any readers that are not familiar with the area, that's in Newport, not Covington. The dividing line between the two cities is the Licking River, so if you're west of the Licking, you're in Covington. If you're between the Licking and I-471, you're in Newport. I'm glad to hear that you found a place that works for you, seicer.
June 8, 200817 yr Yeah, oops. I had it written down as Covington and found it easy in Newport (which I thought was Covington) on my first trip. On my second trip, I was in Covington and was searching for the damn place for 30 minutes ><, before realising that it was across the Licking River... Companies? Middle Earth Developers had some units open but they are more expensive. Let me check the references later in the day when I have the list in front of me.

June 13, 200817 yr I love coffee, and have been there like 5 times already. It's great and it's pretty cozy. I won't be moving until the 28th now, but it gives me time to shop for furniture! I pretty much live at IKEA and Crate and Barrel. Too bad the latter is so far away :( Anyone need an L-shaped computer desk that is in three parts? Contains drawyer, file cabinet, some sliding out things, and storage nooks. Like $10 is all I'm asking since some of the veneer has come loose at the edges (due to my fat arms rolling over it and some minor water damage). I also have a TV stand that is half-height (~3 feet?) that has storage nooks and etc.

June 16, 200816 yr I won't be at my apartment for about a week :( They are both tan-coloured, "oak veneer." The l-shaped desk has some veneer gone near the front. It has a pull-out keyboard tray, a filing cabinet and a pull-out printer tray, a drawer (sans front which needs to be glued on), and some cubbies. I might just give that away since it has been damaged. The TV stand is in perfect condition and has oak veneer.
