Posted May 25, 200817 yr Inspired by the Cincinnati Enquirer’s mention of Ohio's memorial halls, I thought it would be fun to compile some of the prominent memorial buildings in the state. Obviously this isn’t comprehensive, so feel free to add! Bellefountaine - Logan County (built 1894) Cincinnati – Hamilton County Circleville – Pickaway County Columbus – Franklin County Dayton – Montgomery County Hamilton – Butler County (built 1906) Ironton – Lawrence County (abandoned) Lima – Allen County Mansfield – Richland County Mount Vernon – Knox County Sidney – Shelby County (first memorial hall in State, built 1875) Springfield – Clark County (built 1915, demolished 2010) Toledo - Lucas County (built 1886, demolished 1955) Zanesville - Muskingum County (demolished 1937) And to end on a positive note, back to Hamilton:
May 25, 200817 yr It's sad that some communities have so little respect for their veterans and martyrs as to let their memorial buildings fall into disrepair and abandonment. On the other hand, some of those are magnificent. Here are some photos from Cleveland, lifted from a post on my web site:
May 28, 200817 yr Wow @ Sidney's! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 19, 200916 yr Dayton's Memorial Hall isnt exatley threatened but it's not being used for anything. It is officially closed. The county keeps it pickled, but no public activities are scheduled in the building anymore. It's another Dayton white elephant.
March 20, 200916 yr I received some bad news via email regarding the Clark County Memorial Building which has been vacant since 1985: A few old photos I have: Some flickr photos: http://flickr.com/photos/fischink/102831176/ Springfield is turning itself into Hiroshima one trackhoe bucket at a time.
April 2, 200916 yr Some amazing photos of the interior of the Clark County Memorial Building are on Flickr from the Springfield Preservation Alliance: http://www.flickr.com/photos/restorespringfield/page4/ Examples... From the Springfield News-Sun: Public offers ideas on hall SPRINGFIELD - Joy McDaniel grew up running around Memorial Hall as her parents put on country shows there. It saddens her to see the deteriorated condition of the building. "It is such a disgrace," she said. McDaniel joined about 50 people at a forum the Springfield Preservation Alliance hosted Tuesday, March 24, to gather input on plans to save the front of Memorial Hall and demolish the rest of it. © 2009 Cox Newspapers, Inc. - Springfield News-Sun http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=127262F5B9CCA950&p_docnum=3
April 8, 200916 yr From the Springfield News-Sun: Memorial Hall demolition OK, with conditions By Samantha Sommer SPRINGFIELD — A review panel gave the owners of Memorial Hall approval to demolish the downtown icon, but required they make one more effort to seek a way to have the building renovated or re-used. The Springfield Historic Landmarks Commission approved Monday, April 6, a conditional certificate of appropriateness for demolition. http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/hp/content/oh/story/news/local/2009/04/07/sns040709memorialhall.html
April 8, 200916 yr I read someplace in the last week or two that Cleveland's Soldiers and Sailors Monument is undergoing major restoration; the roof and structural repairs are already complete, along with the exterior granite, and the tablets on the inside with the names of those who served are being cleaned and restored letter-by-letter and the stained-glass panels are being taken apart, cleaned one piece at a time, and re-leaded.
January 27, 201015 yr Gah, another great thread! Up thread Jeffery mentioned Dayton's Memorial Hall's lack of use. Well, not anymore. Dayton History is going to operate it and the Old Court House: http://fortheloveofdayton.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/dayton-history-taking-over-operations-at-memorial-hall-old-court-house/
September 19, 201014 yr I just came across a picture of Zaneville's former Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, which stood between 1888 and 1937.
