Sox, architects save, add to beloved building

By Paul Restuccia, Boston Herald

Monday, May 19, 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and architects welcome to Fenway Park.

A group from the American Institute of Architects convention took a tour of the venerable ballpark Saturday to get a look at Fenway’s recent renovations from an architect’s perspective, complete with models and drawings.

The graphics aren't that great from the story, but I really like the approach Boston took with gradually renovating Fenway Park.  They've upgraded the facilities and added to the seating capacity, almost imperceptibly.  What's more, at one time Boston was considering tearing down Fenway to build a New Fenway next door.  I even have a site plan rendering of this concept that I saved from ballparks.com...

Fortunately this never happened.  So old Fenway Park was saved with a combination of preservation on the outside...

...and renovation on the inside.  This is a view from the new right field seats.  Play ball!

It's a great old ball park.  Saw the "Sawx" play the Angels there on a perfect August evening in 2004.  Center field seats, a clear sky, full moon, beer, hot dawgs and baseball.

They have done a very nice job with Fenway...I think the work that has been done to Wrigley should also be commended.

Fenway Park getting more seats, roof repairs

Nov 6, 12:00 PM EST

By JIMMY GOLEN

AP Sports Writer

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox are adding more seats to 96-year-old Fenway Park. The team is working on adding 560 new seats to the Major League's oldest and smallest ballpark. Workers are using jackhammers in the rain Thursday in the lower deck and cranes are on the field as part of another round of offseason renovations.  It's the eighth year of ballpark improvements since the team was purchased by the group led by John Henry and Tom Werner.

Listening to the Indians game in Boston, Hammy mentioned all the construction going on there. A few weeks ago, he mentioned all the construction going on in Detroit. Here in Cleveland, nothing much is happening. Yeah, I know SHW and City Club will be starting eventually, but it would be nice to see more.

That looks like the former Boston Edison plant in South Boston.  The site is going to be re-developed.

Is there no design review or design standards in Boston? This looks utterly atrocious.

is the ny hearst version any better for ya?

The Boston one is far worse---I guess because South Station is such beautiful architecture and is completely incongruent with the shiny new tower. In the Hearst version, the original building is not so spectacular to begin with. I don't really mind the NY one. I hate the Boston one!

I have a decent view of South Station Tower from my hotel room. Looking down Summer Street from the convention center in the Seaport district.

This building going up at the World Trade Center in the Seaport district also looks interesting.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

When I lived in Boston 20+ years ago, the brick warehouses along the Fort Point Channel were semi-abandoned and/or occupied by artists and restaurant workers.  The "Seaport" was desolate, except for the u/c convention center.

I remember going to a coworker's apartment in one of those warehouses during the daytime but I can't remember which building it was.  It was similar to the desolation surrounding the now unaffordable DUMBO warehouses.

dumbo was never desolate. those were working warehouses until the walentas bought them up and converted them. there were popular businesses down there and it was always active and even had some residential, albeit nothing like these days.

yipes — now a million dollar city —

This is the next US city where buyers will need $1M to buy an average family home

By Mary K. Jacob

Brace yourself, Boston — house prices are about to hit stratospheric levels.

Experts predict that Beantown will soon join the ranks of urban areas where the average family home costs a jaw-dropping $1 million.

A lethal mix of soaring construction costs, desperate buyers and homebodies unwilling to budge has catapulted house prices to dizzying heights in 68 of America’s 100 largest cities over the past decade.

Seaport I assume.  Such an amazing makeover.  One of the last parcels starts construction next month.  Alot of this crazy fast development in Boston has been fueled by an incredibly strong biomedical industry.

I lived in Boston more than 20 years ago when the Seaport was nothing but parking lots.  A guy at the restaurant I worked at had a cheap loft apartment in one of the warehouses on the Fort Point Channel.  This is before anything was renovated in that area.   I remember him always getting out of closing because he had to catch the last red line train to South Station.

The Silver Line BRT is really useful.  It operates like a subway in the Seaport area with a number of underground stations.  For whatever reason nobody who talks about BRT ever talks about the Boston Silver Line network.

Similarly, nobody ever seems to talk about the part of the Big Dig that was built beneath what is now the Seaport.  I remember it being called the "Turnpike Extension" during planning.  The Turnpike Extension + the Ted Williams Tunnel were like half of the project's budget but all anyone talks about is the I-93 section.  The Big Dig was all about cementing Downtown Boston + The Seaport as the undisputed center of the Boston region.  The Seaport is a 5-minute cab or BRT ride from the Logan Airport terminals.  In a metro that is notoriously mired by congestion, no other American city enjoys such convenient access between its downtown and international airport.  Thanks to the Ted Williams Tunnel, Logan has the convenience of Burke and other small next-to-downtown airports but it's one of the biggest airports in the United States.

No offense, but Boston is lame and boring compared to Philly. One block of Philly is more vibrant than the entire city of Boston, if you can even call it a city rather than a glorified college town.

Boston is lame and boring?

Well... that's certainly an interesting take.
