Did you know that Tim Horton's was owned by Columbus based Wendy's?

I never knew this.  I thought Tim Horton's was Canadian but apparently Weny's International bought them in the mid 90's.  I believe Tim Horton's still has there hq in Ontario but they are now owned by an Ohio company.

Are there any Tim Horton's in Cincinnati?  They seem to have a decent base in Dayton.

Yes, I knew that.  I was the one who pointed it out to you on SSF.  :)

In Canada, "Timbo's" is a national pride brand.  Their most popular advertising revolves around Canadians going to other countries with Tim Horton's mugs and meeting other Canadians because they also carry around Tim Horton's mugs.  But now they are owned by an American company.

I figured they were connected, around Ohio State Tim Hortons took over a bunch of Wendy's places, or shared the same building (N. Campus)

Yup, I certainly knew that.

The Tim Hortons web site only recently put store locations on there... I'd always wondered what kind of incursion it has made into the U.S. and was finally able to find out a few months ago.  The great majority of locations in Ohio are around Columbus, with Dayton coming in second place.  Looks like the closest one to Cincinnati is in Monroe.

Tim Horton's expanded into Toledo in the 1990's, before they were bought out by Wendy's.  But after that most of the expansion was in the Columbus area, with spillover into Dayton.

even coshocton has one!

Boy did I swell with pride when I read this topic! ;)

I'd heard that someone up at the top of the Tim Horton's organization was married to Wendy Thomas (Dave's daughter....the original Wendy).  Then again, that could be urban legend.

living in columbus, it'd be nearly impossible for me to not know it.

?? i don't know of any north campus wendys/tim hortons combos... where exactly do you mean?

also, who all knows that tim horton was a hockey player?

There was a Tim Horton's/Wendy's combo at Woodruff/High but that Tim Horton's moved to Clintonville while the Wendy's just expanded in the same building.

Ah! Colday, I was wondering what happened in that Wendy's... I thought maybe I was crazy for thinking there used to be a Tim Horton's in there.  Thanks for explaining.

ah...shows how much i pay attention to things sometimes.

There's been one by the Dayton Mall for quite some time, but now all of a sudden, they are popping up all over the place here in the Dayton area.

From the 7/30/05 Akron Beacon Journal:

Wendy's to spin off part of Tim Hortons

Wendy's International Inc. said Friday it plans to sell a portion of its Tim Hortons business, weeks after a major shareholder sent a letter urging a spinoff of the profitable doughnut and coffee chain.

Wendy's, the third-largest burger chain, also said it plans to convert a portion of its company-owned burger restaurants into franchises and sell some of the land it rents to franchisees.

I knew that. Did you know Pepsi owns KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut?

Actually I don't think Pepsico owns them any longer.  I think they were spun off into Yum Brands Inc., which also owns Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants.

I can't keep up with all of these conglomerates!!!

I really like Tim Horton's coffee.  You are right - they are all over Dayton.  I used to stop at the one on 741 (Morraine/W.Carrollton) on my way to work at least once or twice a week.  I'd pick them over Boston Stoker and Starbucks anyday, plus they are cheaper.

In the Dayton area, there is no real mom and pop coffee place.  In Naw'lins, there was tons of locally owned coffee joints that were all good.  I miss that.  I miss my beignets and I miss Community Coffee (CC's) and chicory.  But Tim Horton's will do for now.  The Coffee Beanery is okay too, but that's yet another chain too.

If you know a locally owned, not chain good coffee place in the Dayton/Springboro area, please let me know.

I bet that place never gets robbed due to the high police presence.

Is the coffee shop in Settler's Walk a chain? I thought they were pretty good.

Are you living in Springboro now?

Timbo's didn't enter the U.S. until Wendy's bought them in the late 1990s.  I recall that the University of Michigan had one of the first six U.S. Tim Horton's stores (a combo with Wendy's in the Michigan League).  I believe the Detroit area had a couple stores, and Buffalo/Niagara Falls had the others at the outset.

Their donuts are pretty good, but there's no way their coffee compares to the Dunk!

one of my favorite differences between timmy's and a traditional american cup of coffee is the size.

Timmy's large (in a CDN store) is roughly the size of a starbucks/caribou small.

Well, there are mom&pop coffee places IN Dayton but I have no idea about the south suburbs.

The coffee places I usually go to  (if not one of the student owned and operated places on campus) would be Boston Stoker (either downtown or Brown Street) or the Oregon Emporium or on Saturdays the place in the 2nd Street Market.  They were redoing the Oregon Emporium and making it part of Pacchia/The Jazz Room or something like that--not really sure of the details, as I have not been there in awhile, but there is some news of it in one of the Dayton threads on here.

Yes, and their donuts are subpar in both texture of the dough and sweetness. And they don't have chocolate cream donuts. Scratch that, they did for a little while and they don't anymore because they didn't know how to do it right. How they messed up chocolate cream, I have no clue, but they did.

do I detect some sellout sarcasm in your tone? Yeah, I know I'm a sellout cuz I live in the burbs!  I can't help it - I love my home and neighborhood.

I think that coffee shop is a Boston Stoker - yuk!

Yeah, I'm in Springboro.  North Park is practically my backyard.  It's great. I see rabbits and squirrels all the time. My neighbors tell me to get ready to see lots of deer too with Easton Farms so closeby.

I live in Franklin (Township), right next to Springboro. I am supposed to hate people from Springboro, lol.

North Park has the amplitheater, right?

Watch it, MISSY!!!

I had Tim Horton's this weekend when I was in Columbus.  My god, their honey cruellers are heavenly.

Tim Horton's is expanding to the Lansing, Michigan and Syracuse, New York markets in 2007.  I'm still waiting for them to expand to Pittsburgh (closest locations are Steubenville and Calcutta, Ohio).
