Anyone know any negatives regarding Madeira?

Well, Madeira is homogenous regarding population (middle-class to upper conservative whites) and (for me) has little architectural value.  But I'm sure it's a nice "family" community.

I have a friend who lives there. Generally, Madeira has all the good qualities of a community such as good schools, low crime, and so on. It has the quircks of a small town atmosphere with regard to zoning and building permits; they will go after you if you try to build a shed or a satellite dish without a permit. Supposedly, a lot of lawyers live there. I have not heard any horror stories about Maderia.

Madeira is surprisingly 'diverse'. It has some Indian Hill wanna-be areas. It also has the stuff near Silverton that is nice but more diverse. It also has some residual 'old' rural eastside in some of the valleys.

They have a good school system, and a nice little downtown area on Miami.  I've always felt people who lived in Maderia were either really into living in Maderia, or really in to being Indian Hill-near.  I think it's a nice community, but its a little too white bread for my taste.  If you're wanting to live on the east side with similar housing but a little more diverse and open, try Oakley.

Oakley housing is nothing like Madiera.

Personally I'd rather live in Blue Ash than Madiera.

Actually it is. Small brick houses with small lots are almost exactly the same as they are off Euclid in Maderia and off Brotherton in Oakley.  Now the houses in Blue Ash, on the other hand, are nothing like the housing in Maderia...

Well I guess it depends on what part of Oakley and Madiera.

How does Blue Ash differ from Madeira.

I like the idea of a nice business district and sense of community and Madeira seems to have that moreso than many other areas in the metro.  I alsodon't feel its strile suburbaan sprawl type area.  My first choice wasMt Lookout/ hyde Park but you don't get nearly as much for your money.

There isn't much of a difference, really. The school districts are different (Blue Ash is in Sycamore while Madeira has its own district). Madeira has a more diverse topography whereas by the time you get to Blue Ash it is getting flatter. The traffic is probably better in Madeira than in Blue Ash (you have more access to the back-ways to get places).

BlueAsh has more commercial use, anyone know if their taxes are much lower?

If you're thinking Madeira you might also check out Pleasant Ridge.  You get more for your money than Hyde Park/Mt. Lookout, it's near Kenwood like Madeira, and it's very accessible to downtown.  It's also pretty diverse.

(Full disclosure:  I live in Pleasant Ridge.)

I used to live in Pleasant Ridge.  I owned a home there.  It was a great neighborhood to live and I recommend it.  The only reason we moved is because we decided to live downtown.

I grew up there . . . and I third their comments.

IMO Pleasant Ridge is better than Madeira if your gonna live way out in the boonies.

Madeira = small bedroom community that lives in Indian Hill's shadow.  Nothing too special, but not a bad place either (by suburban standards).

I lived there when i was 16-18.Bad school district but it was always fun to hang out at "everybody's''. That and Shake-It are the best record stores in the city. I used to buy a lot of movie posters at the comic book store; the coffee shop and Pleasant Ridge Chili were right there and the Dubliner was great for when you want to go somewhere more upper class. Too bad the Ridge Market went out of business. That was a cool place! They tried so hard to get neighborhood residents to shop there but with all the new development in Oakley, it just killed it.

I woiuld hardly call it the boonies though; it's really urban and diverse.

PRidge is getting a brand new Montessori school (for the fall, I think). It was always a major feeder for the various montessori programs around town. It generally feeds Walnut and SCPA although it used to be in the Woodward district (bad news). It also has a strong Catholic component tied to Nativity (and the various Catholic high schools).

School tax per thousand of assessed value (from a couple years ago)

Madeira    $1,376

Sycamore    $935

Deer Park  $1,103

Indian Hill    $668
