I'm going thru photos doing research as I plan for my kitchen reno.

I uncovered photos of my apartment when I bought it.  It was an abomination.

My father and grand father ripped me a new one, for buying what they then termed as buying "condemned building".

The woman who lived here before me, loved wall paper!  I took down so much wallpaper, I refuse to ever wallpaper again! :x

Some of the wallpaper, had wallpaper behind it.

Here's an additional photo of the only working bath when I moved in.  Note the wallpaper.

The last time the apartment had actually been renoved was approximately/probably 1953.  The couple who lived there, lived in the apartment from the fifties, and when the building went condo they bought the unit.  When the husband died, he died in the apartment, she stayed here.  One of there sons lived the last building of complex for a long time until he moved into a house on Larchmere.

There were notes from the 50's on some of the walls I took out.

are there going to be "after" photos of the exact same shots?

I only have one or two from the same spots, since I changed many of the walls, eliminated a room to make my master closet, added an entry from the hallway to the dining room and moved a bathroom.

I think these are the only photos from or near the same vantage point.

WOW!  Where is this again?

WOW!  Where is this again?

See my avator.   Those pics are really old.

it looks beautiful!!

Honey, this apartment was a hot mess when I bought it.

When my grand father (who always has a snarky comment ready to play) and father came to see it for the first time, this is the what I can remember of the conversation:

Me:  Welcome

GrandDad:  To where, hell?  It's hot!

Me:  Oh Pops (We, the grand kids and great grand kids call my dad's father "Pops"), please

GD:  Please my a$$, boy!  No move your lil boney a$$ out the way and let me in.  GD:  (He takes ten steps in) The building looks nice on the outside, lets go back outside.

Me:  Hush!

Me:  Let me show you all around and tell you my plans

GD:  What is up with the paint and the wall paper??  Did these people get decorating tips from Vel's?

Me:  Pops, you have to see beyond the wallpaper.  There is lots of potential here.  Once I'm done with this place you wont even recognize it.

GD:  Does that mean the place will be condemed and torn down?

Me:  Pops you know I wanted a fixer-upper and I want to create a home that reflexs my style and personality.

GD:  Then you should built a house.  You so fu-fu and uppity.  You just like your Ma'ma.

Me:  Hush!

GD:  So this is a foreclosure?  I can't believe that you paid for this, you mean to tell me that the bank wouldn't just give this to you??  This is going to be a lot of work and money.  You kids think you know you everything these days and don't know nothing.

GD:  (to my father) You let him buy this?

Me:  I'm right here, I'm not invisible, this is my house.

GD:  (to me) Boy, is anyone talking to you?

GD:  Can we leave now, I might catch something if I stay in here to long.  People have already died up in here and I don't want to be the next.  Lets go!

My grandfather is a straight trip.  Now he claims my house is OK.

Your GrandDad sounds like he'd fit right in on the forums!

Pops is like a combination of Fred Sanford & Mother jefferson with a dash of Sophia Petrillo.

Haha, I would love to meet your grandfather!

You say that now.  You'll like him right up until the time you say something "wrong" (translation- something he doesn't like or agree with) then you'll be on the list with my sister in law.  He makes her cry all the time and of course I love it!

Its weird this thread came up, I found another picture of the second bathroom i forgot just how ugly my apartment was.  I need to concentrate on my kitchen.  One of the neighbors is remodeling their kitchen there was a ton fancy smancy Electrolux appliance out back.

I want your laundry room.

LOL.  My least used room.  You can have it!

That's an awfully nice room for you to hardly use it!  I don't think it'll fit in our new townhouse, though.  We've only got room for a stacked W/D.....  Some day!  Baby steps....  I'll just be happy to even have a washer and dryer after six years in dorms and apartments with coin machines!

I rarely cook, so I don't use the kitchen that often.  But I can microwave and steam like nobody's business!  I rarely do laundry since I have a domestic help.  You sound as bad as my cousin who sends his laundry to my house.

I'm a woman - I like to cook and clean.  Not that I like to foster stereotypes or anything (after all I am an engineer), but I've got a good bit of the betty homemaker gene in me as well :).

I've never had to cook so I only know basic stuff, but I can roast the hell out a turkey!  and i have this steamer....i say its the best invention ever created.

Is that a Tiger Stadium-style communal urinal trough I see?

My mom, both of my grandmothers and the maid are AMAZING cooks.  So my brother and I never had to learn to cook.

I'm no gourmet, but I know my way around the kitchen, I just don't like cooking.

I understand, most men don't like cooking.  Hence my snide, generalistic remark :)

Hey I make up for my lack up cooking, since I LOVE LIVE to shop!

Lol, okay, I'll give ya that.

The real question is.. why would you get rid of that bar?!?!

MTS, those before and after shots are amazing!  The Moreland Courts are such an amazing canvas for one's design skills- you must have had a total blast with that project.

The real question is.. why would you get rid of that bar?!?!

a) It was ugly as hell

b) It didn't go with my design scheme/style

c) I don't drink and don't need a bar

Don't drink.. whoaaaaa..

yes, It helps me stay young

You could've invited all of us over. We sure would have taken advantage of the bar!

Probably my staff in CHI or NYC would, if they advertised on one of our networks, or in one of our publications or if they had product placement in one of our movies/tv shows.

gotcha :)

Get me a job at Playboy :)

Did you buy everything at Ikea west chester?

You don't want to work there.  TRUST ME!  All the "fun" stuff is in LA with Hugh.

ME??  Honey, Me and Ikea DO NOT belong in the same sentence.  When I want to buy trash, I dumpster dive.

once I tagged along when my friend had to chaperone a playmate at an event in Toledo.  She's from Ohio even, North Ridgeville, I believe - Nicole Lenz.  It was kinda fun in a road trip sorta way.  Plus, with the hassle of frequent travel come the benefits of hotel points and air miles :)

Nice job, MTS!  Did you do all of the work yourself?

Thanks!  I'd say I've done 85-90%.  Contractors of course did the building of walls the pluming, closets and air.

I just knew what to tear down and where wires were, so with 18 male cousins, tearing out walls was a piece of cake.

I complete gutted all three bathrooms, one being built.  Over the years, I've learned how to tile, grout, paint, build a fireplace, cut moldings, chair rail and baseboards, etc.

I think every square inch of my apartment, with exception to the kitchen, has been renovated at least three times.
