September 13, 200618 yr I went to elementary school at St Stanislaus B&M in Chicago, and Jesse Stuart Jr High and High School in Valley Station, KY (jr and sr high schools shared the same library, gym, and cafeteria and music and shop rooms..basically it was one big school), and I'm a file clerk.
September 13, 200618 yr ^All together, I've been to over 20 elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Lets just say I've learned how to make friends FAST.
September 13, 200618 yr Well, I do have a new job now. I do work for the state of Ohio now and am satisfied...for now. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 13, 200618 yr I am interested in getting a degree in geography and maybe economics. what can I do with a degree in geography? I currently work at National City and am wondering if that can help out in any way or with an agency like MORPC, ODOT, etc...? any help would be appreciated.
September 13, 200618 yr PM Pigboy. He's a geography major and he'd know :] I think he told me that geography involves a lot of business and psychology classes; it sounds pretty interesting. I can't wait to get my degree. I need to switch to an engineering school though. Applied science schools don't go into enough depth. I wanna learn how to design and write compilers and database engines...its fundamental in learning how to do so much other stuff and I'm not so sure they're gonna go in depth enough here :[
September 13, 200618 yr To all, I'd hate to pull a 'William Safire' here but I needed to comment on something I've noticed in many of the replies already posted to this thread. One of the intangible joys a person experiences when they receive their diploma/degree/certification is the satisfaction of knowing they EARNED that reward rather than just 'getting' it. IMHO, 'getting' implies a sense of entitlement instead of accomplishment (like a teen expecting an allowance because he/she expects to receive one instead of actually doing things to earn such a stipend). With ever increasing tuition fees, today's students might feel that a degree might be a 'quid pro quo' for their attendance and their (parent's) money. However, like a sporting event, it is only an admission to that 'venue' and does nothing to guarantee the team's (or student's) success when the 'contest' is over. I would hope our learning institutions still require their students to successfully demonstrate understanding of the present materials prior to conferring their concurrence and presenting the certifying document. If that is not the case, then our educational system has a lot more problems than previously thought. As a 'multi-grad' (I listed my degrees above but I skipped my HS diploma and a variety of military training schools graduations), very few things come close to the feeling you get when you look at that piece of paper and close the mental 'loop' between toil and reward. So drop the 'got' and proudly affirm that you have earned your degree! :speech:
September 14, 200618 yr i have to agree with daytonblue. I really admire the collecive brainpower here, and that you all have the combination of ability and character to make it through college, not once but twice as I see a lot of you have multiple degrees. As someone who only had a brief two year (really one and a half year) brush with college I have a lot of respect for people who are able to make it through and earn that degree.
September 14, 200618 yr no, CWRU handed it to me when i sent them my last tuition check. Ditto with OSU but I appreciate all that has been said (by daytonblue and Jeff). But let's keep in mind, regardless of multiple degrees or none at all, intelligence is seen by all on this board (okay, so um...David...well...*pot shots*). September 14, 200618 yr Well, your mom can't so... FINE. Enough with this useless back&forth Aaliyah rant. I am a masters student working for the state. I cannot jeopardize my professional background with a 'youngster' living under a bridge in a Cincinnati neighborhood. That would be uncivilized. So go to Hell, sir! September 14, 200618 yr Guess I never posted my current situation in this thread. It's in the master's program in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, focusing on cartography. Also now indoctrinating students as a TA this year! Regarding a geography degree as mentioned in those posts last night, I'm ashamed to admit that I don't have a good idea of what a geography degree does for you; my own concentration is enough of a bastard child of geography (academically speaking) that I'm not too familiar with a regular geography degree. I could probably find learn something, though. Or maybe I can foist the question onto Magyar; he's more of a straight up geographer. Oh, and I don't think I'd have mentioned business and psychology classes, David... maybe that was just some sweet dream of yours. Oh, and watch out- I bet the pope will fight you for ColDay's mom.

I was wondering where you've been. :-) As for Columbusguy's question about Economics & Geography. If you're interested in working out computations, you can focus on Ecomomic Geography @ OSU. But as I learned the hard way, they won't provide you the contacts into ODOT, MORPC, nor the City of Columbus. You will have to make your own way into those groups.
September 28, 200618 yr Oops...Just transfered today, to: College of Design, Architecture, Art, & Planning - School of Planning - Urban Planning Props to Randy for helping me get in :-D
September 29, 200618 yr What exactly are you saying and where exactly are you getting this from? I've lived in the city all my life and loved it. I only go to the suburbs to buy cheap TShirts at Steve and Barrys. I purposely went to school on an urban campus. If it's because I talk alot about the perspective of suburbanites on a lot of issues, it's not because I support them and feel inclined to defend them, it's because it's important to understand how they think when trying to come up with a solution. I would love to help in creating that solution--hence me transfering to DAAP.
September 29, 200618 yr as a soon-to-be-daap planning-grad, here's my advice. 1. do kick ass work 2. please your professors 3. make those you can't please think 4. take full advantage of the travel/co-op/study abroad experiences 5. red-bull 6. enjoy
September 29, 200618 yr Yeah I was wondering why there was no Suburban Planning concentration. Suburbia is already overplanned.

When I met with the director, he told me it was really hard but I think when you actually love the classes, it makes it so much easier. I knew something was wrong when the only class I liked was English (I was initially in computer engineering). Besides the program itself, I just like the type of people that are at DAAP. I didn't care too much for the people at CAS. Oh yeah, and Redbull doesn't do anything to me. Coffee and Rockstar energy drinks are my drug of choice!
October 1, 200618 yr I recommend the chocolate covered expresso beans for all-nighters. And some very loud music. -DAAP B-arch grad
October 1, 200618 yr Somehow I missed this two-year-old thread.... Barely graduate from Kenston High School in Geauga County in 1985. Got into Kent State University where I majored in transportation logistics management, minored in urban geography. While I did well in my major/minor classes, I stunk in the prerequisites. In my fourth year of struggling along, I spent more time starting a rail advocacy project between Cleveland and Pittsburgh than I did attending classes. KSU said "go away kid" and gave me the heave ho. I was devastated as I packed up my stuff at my off-campus apartment and returned home, talking to myself the whole way up Route 43. I angrily vowed I would get my degree. If I failed again, no school would even consider me. I got into Myers College in downtown Cleveland, and devoted myself to earning my BS in public administration. In 1992, after just 2.5 years, I graduated with a 3.8 GPA overall and 4.0 in my major, while I worked full-time. Those years at Myers (then called Dyke College -- don't ask, don't tell) were some of the best of my life, and were capped off with the natural high I got walking across the stage to receive my diploma. I will never forget those years, and the life lessons I learned about finding one's focus. October 1, 200618 yr Great, now I have to pay out the ass for buy Adobe Illustrator CS2 and I just transfered so I'm not in the system yet to use daapspace so that I can look at my assignments. Excuse me while I go shoot myself.
October 19, 200618 yr I believe I posted on this topic a while ago, but some things have changed since then. I am a graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Geography: Urban Planning. I became a trator and now attend Miami University and am a Grad student in there Department of Architecture. David, I envy you. I see that you got into DAAP. I was there with my class to see the architect of DAAP give a talk. It was my first time acctually being on the campus ( I had stayed in areas around it). It made me realize how stupid I was for not going there in the first place. They were the very first school to accpept me out of high school. One of my teachers in HS told me that it was too much of a concrete campus and really dangerous so I never even visited. Boy was I an idiot. Oh well. It's a nice campus. Enjoy your time there!
October 20, 200618 yr This website is what inspired me to even do it :] How is UC dangerous? People only think that because whenever something does happen here they make sure EVERYONE knows about each incident. It's b.s. There's nowhere else I'd rather be getting a BUP. Im trying to convince my friend at BGSU to come here, he's in graphic design...all I'll have to do is show him the DAAP building and some of the studio work and im convinced he'll be leaving with an application :]
October 20, 200618 yr i dk how i missed doing this thread. heres some dope on me: basically -- bgsu undergrad and bgsu grad. ahh but not so fast, theres some more. i did college time other places too: lccc, csu for some pre-bg undergrad classes. other grad & post grad school time wasted: wku (the o.g. bowling green in the ky), thee osu, dominican, otterbein, brooklyn & columbia. i am a school psychologist for nyc schools aka a city employee. i basically eval spec. ed. kids who are in detention and on trial. not rikers island, although ive worked there, but jr rikers. i worked in westerville previously and in findlay for my bg internship. i worked almost all the on campus jobs like lccc stocker center, refereeing intramurals & food service, etc. for all they were worth and later on i worked in toledo as an undergrad.
October 20, 200618 yr It seems WKU attracted a folks who went to my high school (probably as they had a lot of kin in that part of Kentucky). Interesting architectural trivia...Peter Eisenmann the architect was a Hilltopper basketball fan as, for some reason, he listned to their games on radio when he was a kid. It even got a brief mention in a John Prine song ("Grandpa Was a Carpenter").
October 20, 200618 yr jeff i was a hilltopper for two semesters --- until i did the crazy thing and changed my major in grad school & went back to the other bg. my handle should be mrbg. more bg trivia -- there is a small nabe in bg, ky that has all the main bg, oh streets. obviously this is where the bg, ky folks who founded bg, oh originally came from. i'll never forget when i came upon that nabe on a bike ride, that freaked me out.

October 20, 200618 yr Hey we should have like a little local forum meet and have one of you DAAPers that have been there for several years be like a tour guide..or atleast have a few people come along with general knowledge that could answer a few questions. I think a lot of people on here would be interested in going and seeing the crazy interior and the design projects that are always on display. This year the AIA ranked Steger as one of the most exciting buildings. It's also very "green". That and the rest of Main street would also be worth touring. I never see any pictures on this site actually taken inside UC's campus except for McMicken Hall so I'm assuming a lot of people haven't seen UC for everything that it is.

I've been around the area and I did feal slightly uncomfortable.
October 29, 200618 yr Went to Temple University in Philly. Got a BA in Broadcasting, worked in that biz for 6 years, then got into sales and now sell copiers, printers and document management software here in Cincy. Going to XU for MBA as well....to get out of sales eventually. Anticipating burn out in 5 years or so.
