I might end up taking a job in the Arena District.  Part of my decision will rely on the answers to some of the question, are there good residential options nearby?  I think at this point I still would want to rent, at least for a year, until I am more firmly established in the market.

What good options are there?  I've read up on a number of condos going up, but haven't found much on rental units.

Thanks!

thank you rider :)

If you literally would like to be right in the middle of everything, the Arena Crossing Apartments would definitely be your best bet. However, I've heard that the units can be very noisy at night, since the complex is bordered by Park St./North Market, Gordon Beirsch/O'Shaughnessy's, and the arena.

I would actually suggest properties downtown, since they tend to be quieter and are still within walking/biking distance of the Arena District. My top recommendation would be the Spring Street Apartments:

Spring Street feeds into the southern boarder of the Arena District and the complex is only about 3 blocks away.

I would also check out the Gay St. corridor, which is a few blocks to the south and east, but in a very up-and-coming area of downtown within relatively close proximity to the Arena District. Properties to consider include:

Carlyles Watch:

or

15 E. Gay St.

If you don't mind doing some research, there are numerous apartment buildings in Victorian Village, directly north of the Arena District. I would recommend properties along Neil Ave., which also feeds into the Arena District.

^much appreciated!

from what i've found so far from my own limited research (Google/Craigslist/forent.com/etc) haven't produced the information I'm looking for...

are there any downtown residential rental options for around $700-$800/mo? everything seems to be condo-related...

Basically what everyone currently in Columbus did. In case anyone ever wondered why there's so many Cleveland sports fans there.

No.  After I graduated, I was hypnotized and any memory I had of Columbus from 84-88 was erased.

^thanks guys...this would not be an easy decision, but the offer may simply be too good to turn down

Yeah you could always live in Victorian/Italian Village and just bike to work. I'm not sure how many bike racks are available in the Arena District; maybe someone knows about that. It's always a fun ride in that area; theres so much going on.

I ride all the time (no car) and I live near the main library on the southeast side of Downtown which has options starting as low as just over $300 a month. It's a nice, small neighborhood area and we even have a brick street! You'll probably find that you'll be heading north quite a bit in which case you can always look at Italian Village, Victorian Village, Harrison West, and Dennison Place. The Arena District is close to all places mentioned including my hood which borders Olde Towne East, though I'd have to factor in what mode(s) of transport you prefer. You probably wouldn't want to walk from where I live to the AD everyday, but it's an easy ride by bike on the side streets.

Ideally, I'd love to be able to walk to work!  So I think that really limits my options to start with, if nothing makes sense, I can expand out from there I suppose...

give www.metro-rentals.com and craigslist (under columbus then to apts/housing) a try; metron-rentals.com is especially helpful!

Your office would literally be at your doorstep if you decided to live at Arena Crossing, assuming the office is in one of the buildings directly inside the Arena District's borders. Sixty Spring is within pretty easy walking distance, as far as I'm concerned. Both come in slighty at or above the $700-$800 threshold, but might be worthwhile if it means completely foregoing an automobile. There are some very nice properties in Vic Village and Harrison West that are priced below your price range, but would really require either riding a bike or taking the bus. COTA has pretty frequent service along Neil to the Arena District, so that's a decent option. Keep in mind though, the further north you go, the closer you get to OSU and the possibility of raucous neighbors.

That is enticing, but Arena Crossing is uber-expensive, slightly more than what I want to pay.

I'd like to be able to live some place that has a bit of a social aspect to it, as I would be living alone.  While I know people in the area, I'll be relying on work/my living arrangement to have a social aspect outside of the weekends.

In that case, I'd probably suggest a converted house turned apartments in Vic Village and Harrison West. Consider residences along W 1st Ave and W 3rd Ave, as there are some nice indy bars and restuarants along those stretches. Another option might be Grandview Heights. Close to the Arena District and with a cozy, lively downtown. You can also ride COTA from parts of Grandview into downtown, but alas the car might be a better option as far as pure convenience. My suggestion would be properties along Northwest Blvd, Goodale Blvd, and Grandview Ave itself. Metro-Rentals has a page dedicated to Grandview rentals as well:

Also, if you do end up taking the job here, ask ColDayMan to give you a tour of the areas under consideration. He's a fantastic guide, and will get you up close and personal to many of the aforementioned areas.

thanks CMH, I sincerely appreciate the input

My pleasure. Keep us updated!

Yeah, if you need a tour, shoot me a PM.

I don't think this deserves a new thread so I'm going to piggyback off this one. I might be taking a job off of N. High in Clintonville and possibly a second one at Ohio State. I'm currently looking for affordable apartments (<$700) preferably somewhere between downtown and Clintonville along the 2 route where I could walk/bike/bus to work. I'm a recent college grad so I'm not looking for anything fancy just a nice place to lay down my head at night. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't know Columbus all that well. I have checked out some of the links already provided on this page. Thanks!

Well, my advice is STAY AWAY from the area between 5th Avenue and Dodridge.  Other than that, you'll be fine.  Try Victorian Village or even Dennison Place.

ColDay, not real familiar with Columbus. What's the deal between 5th and Dodridge? And I haven't been able to find anything about Dennison Place. Where is that located? Thanks for your help...

Sorry, I for some reason missed your post!

I would most definitely suggest Olentangy Village. The community sits directly off High St. in between Campus and Clintonville and has single units starting in the mid to upper $600s. Given what you described, it would be the perfect location. A full-service Giant Eagle sits on the grounds of Olentangy Village and there are lots of independent stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries within walking distance. Not to mention, the #2 goes right by for longer distance trips. Their website:

http://www.olentangyvillage.com/index.html

If Olentangy Village doesn't meet your likes, there are other much smaller apartment buildings scattered around the areas north of Campus and in to Clintonville. The only problem is as you go further north, your options become more limited as Clintonville is mostly single family dwellings. I would also recommend looking at aparments on the other side of the river in the University Village area. There are a lot of apartments there that have very good access to COTA and are close to shopping and other services along Olentangy River Road. Most of MGI Communities' properties sit close to Campus, are in good, older neighborhoods, and are within easy access of goods and services either via bike or COTA:

http://www.mgicommunities.com/search2.asp

The only problem with some of these properties is that they are close to Campus but somewhat far from Clintonville. For example, the Stadium View apartments are in a perfect location in that they are within short walking/biking distance to Lennox, 5th Ave, Grandview Heights, and Campus, however they are pretty far from Clintonville proper, and trying to take COTA would probably involve riding your bike all the way to High St. But, they still could be an option, especially since the majority fit your price range well.

If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to ask.

Between 5th and Dodridge is Ohio State and trust me, you don't want to be dealing with those college kids.  Dennison Place is west of High Street, north of 5th Ave, east of Cannon Dr, up to around 10th.  Very comfortable neighborhood with bus service, etc.

The Olentangy Village area is pretty nice. We've got Denise's Ice Cream (stole them from Boston), Mama Mimi's take and bake (go with the award winning chicken gorgonzola on apricot glaze), a Cup O Joe, Seagull Bags (for a quality messenger bag), Pattycake Bakery (vegan and delish). Clintonville sits north of Arcadia and is safe from OSU riff-raff. Could be more walkable, but I think they're working on that and there are plenty of side streets for bikes. Just stay off of High and major east-west roads like Weber. They're 35 even in heavily residential sections and I found out on my own. You've also got a small commercial strip tucked away on Indianola (yes, there's more than High St) with Studio 35 and Yeah, Me Too coffeeshop. The neighborhood is a hodge-podge of urban and sprawl (more urban than sprawl, for now) and is too far north for my taste, but there is a good amount of positives. There's also the Clintonville Community Co-op for local grocery shopping. Always good to browse the streets near High for "For Rent" signs. I'm sure you could find some good deals.
