one clarification: fyi the rta poster is not exactly mere propaganda. rta was voted best large city transit system in america by apta. again. but that's ok we realize having no local experience with a for real transit system you wouldn't understand  so here's a link:

All I know is that the RTA looked worse than MARTA, and that's saying a lot.  The trains we actually saw running had 1 car most of the time with the occasional two-car train.  But it is still rail...so I give Cleveland that.

The Stokes Courthouse is a modern representation of early skyscrapers and their own reliance upon the classical order, and specifically the form of the column.  The courthouse can actually be seen as a quarter-section of a single Doric order column, complete with a distinctive base, shaft, and capital.

With that in mind, having a modern representation of the Venus de Milo makes a bit more sense.

Or, you could just think of it as an homage to the Kingsbury Run Torso Murders, which took place a couple miles to the east.

Were the one-car operations packed to the gill?  I think it's more of being efficient than anything else.

Rando, you should be upset your "tour guide" didn't let you out in the Heights to take pictures!  That bastard!

Nope, looked empty.

Exactly, so if it's empty, why run multiple cars at that time?

Nope, looked empty.

I have to ask, where were, you when you saw this train?

hmm.

aside from the green-eyed/backhanded tangent on rail, the key in that reply is remember that maybe rta "looked worse than marta" to you....but it didn't to apta.   give cleveland that.

^ Well, it doesn't look bad when it's in a 100x70 pixel image at 50 dpi! lol

What do you think, MayDay ... do you like it?

I'm not MayDay, but I'll jump in here.

I think the photo above is actually one of the more unflattering views of it, and coming down Huron from Gateway I think it looks a little awkward off  on its own like that.  However, coming over the Detroit Superior Bridge, or even the West Shoreway, I LOVE LOVE LOVE how it blends in with the architecture of the old Post Office, the Ritz, Skylight Office tower, the Landmark Building, and of course, the Terminal Tower.  It's really great vista of buildings spanning 80+ years that all compliment each other really well.

Anyone have a pic of this?

He saw it, that's all he needed to see :).

HUMPH!

Nice photo thread, UncleRando.  I'm mixed on the Courthouse.  I like it from the sides and from the "inside" perspective of the 1/4 column, but not from the back/outside perspective.  It always reminds me of an oversized storage tank.

Nope, looked empty.

Yes, RTA is certainly about efficient use of funding, but if you ever ride the waterfront line, it's almost always nearly empty cars.

that is exactly why I asked WHERE he saw the train as the WFL isn't indicative of riding passengers on the other "three" rail lines

1. Who wants to be Downtown on a blistering hot Sunday when you can be lounging on one of Greater Cleveland's many beaches?

2. I've always loved the Stokes Federal Courthouse... what a unique design!  I guess it's a "love it or hate it" skyscraper!  I'd take it over the multi-block streetlife-killing federal courthouse here in Pittsburgh.

3. This has got to be the most photographed residence in Cleveland... what a breathtakingly tacky monstrosity!  Does the owner realize that thousands of anonymous internet denizens snicker at his/her indulgently flamboyant pseudo-mansion?

The OC's main stretch is pretty dead on Sundays. There is a secondary cbd for the OC--the intersections of Fulton, Bridge and 32nd.

Take a look at Ohio City on a Saturday afternoon and you'll leave with a much different feeling.

I think another very important aspect of Ohio city is the gorgeous  housing that is hidden within the neighborhood.  Many of these houses will just blow you away from there bright colors and intricate detail work.  Next time if you visit Ohio city try driving down Franklin Blvd. or Bridge Avenue.

^^I have a nickname for that house that I stole from the title of a Joy Division song. I call it "Atrocity Exhibition".

It is truly a hair-raising piece of work  :-o
