Road specs don't require asphalt to be sealed, like a parking lot would be.  They are supposed to seal the joints of asphalt/concrete with tar, but that only lasts a few seasons before it wears away.

Roads fail for a variety of reasons but mostly the concrete/asphalt starts to break up when the subgrade (clay surface below) starts to roll/heave.  Pockets form under the pavement, the pavement breaks, and the freeze/thaw cycle takes over from there.  Filling potholes with asphalt is only a temporary fix till next freeze/thaw cycle.

Many of the worst roads for potholes in Cleveland are asphalt on top of brick below.  Not sure what the deal is at 117th.  The concrete pavement is horrendous.

Cool - thanks.

West Boulevard is pretty nasty, too - particularly for the small portion between Lorain and West 105

West 117th was a three-year project that began in 2000. I drove it to work every day from 1996-2008. I remember detouring around the construction on Sept. 11, 2001 while listening to radio news coverage of the attacks as they were happening.

Thats when I remember it being done as well.    So just a little over 10 years ago it was finished.  The road should show some signs of wear and tear, but not utter destruction as we are witnessing today.

I wouldn't say that 11 years is all that unreasonable for a high-traffic concrete road to be deteriorating with the winters we have had in those years.  Remember that 2004-2005 was the most snow ever recorded and the last few years have seen a lot of freeze/thaws instead of the usual long stretches below freezing.

Other roads repaved in concrete much more recently have started to already show signs of wear and tear.

Isn't Lorain supposed to be done between 25th & W130th?

Columbus Road Bridge reopening pushed back again

By Alison Grant, The Plain Dealer

on November 17, 2014 at 1:48 PM, updated November 17, 2014 at 4:41 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio --  The reopening of the Columbus Road Bridge has been delayed again, with the popular link between Ohio City and the Flats now expected to be back in service some time in December.

A top engineer for Cuyahoga County, which is administering the work by American Bridge Co., said the contractor is behind on some final steps needed before the span can reopen.

"They have to make sure the span locks are working correctly," David Marquard said. "After that, they have to test the electrical system" and perform other tasks. Span locks fix the movable part of the lift bridge in place when it is lowered for traffic to cross.

As a Tremont resident, not at all.  A ton of people use(d) Columbus to cut through the Flats into Downtown, or to cut up Franklin and avoid the W. 25th/Lorain intersection

Westlake's first traffic roundabout proposed for Center Ridge, Canterbury intersection

WESTLAKE, Ohio-- The Westlake Planning Commission on Monday night got its first look at a proposal to build a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Center Ridge and Canterbury roads.

Bob Kelly, Westlake's director of engineering, said the intersection is the site of many traffic accidents with injuries -- making it a good candidate to become the city's first roundabout.

"It's been on our radar screen for years," he told the commission, adding that the estimated $2 million to build a roundabout would be about $1 million less than what it would cost to improve the intersection with turning lanes.

These don't belong in NE Ohio.  They don't suit the way we drive.

The one at Pettibone and Richmond is too small and some genius piled up a bunch of rocks and trash in the middle.  It's all but a two way stop when traffic is heavy on Pettibone.

These don't belong in NE Ohio.  They don't suit the way we drive.

Then adjust. It's about time NE Ohioans learned how to drive.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I spent a good week in Cleveland and Pittsburgh not all that long ago. I couldn't believe the number of massive potholes in some of the more desolate, industrial or poor areas of the city - like closer towards E. Cleveland. There was one example, Kirby/Coit, that had so many traffic was only inching along at less than 20 MPH and doing this twisty route around some of the biggest potholes I've ever encountered.

Then I saw why. On some old brick streets near the Tremont neighborhood, I saw extensive shifting of the brick caused by years of freezing and thawing. They all needed to be relaid or removed. But in the more populated areas, especially near wealth, they were in great shape.

That said, the concrete roads were either horrible (if they patched every joint with a mound of asphalt) or excellent (Cedar, Euclid). The asphalt roads were hit-or-miss.

The horribly designed and generally misplaced Richmond-Pettibone roundabout was backed up severely yesterday, and I was stuck behind a car that had "Rep 037" plates and a Kristina Roegner sticker.

1) I didn't know state legislators got their own special plates.

2) Maybe now I can get her to support a bill banning those things from state routes or state funded construction.

I no longer have business in that neck of the woods, but I cannot imagine it's any worse than when Barney Fife had to drive up the multi-use path to direct traffic every day.

2) Maybe now I can get her to support a bill banning those things from state routes or state funded construction.  [/color]

A. Americans don't seem to design roundabouts very well.

B. Many Americans don't know how to use them even if they were well-designed.

The one at Brainard and Shaker isn't too horrible, but the Pettibone-Richmond one is way too small, and the crap built up in the middle causes drivers to be hesitant because they can't see oncoming traffic.  I know why they do that, but it's dumb.  It's effectively a two way stop rather than the four way it was.

That intersection really needed a light that can me made "flashing yellow" most of the day.

New construction project underway in The Flats

Posted by 19 Action News Digital TeamCONNECT

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Ohio Department of Transportation has begun a $3.7 million project to replace the now narrow and outdated bridge which carries Canal Road under the Norfolk Southern railroad (and over the CSX railroad), near the intersection of Commercial Road and the East 9th Street Extension in Cleveland's Flats.

While the new bridge is being built, crews placed a temporary signal to maintain one lane of traffic on the bridge. This will remain until the project is complete. The signal will be tied to the movement of the West 3rd Street Lift Bridge. When the bridge is up, traffic heading toward West 3rd will be stopped at the signal.

Prospect Avenue construction backs up traffic for miles

Faith Boone, Kristin Volk

4:02 PM, Sep 14, 2015

CLEVELAND - Construction along Prospect Avenue still has traffic reduced to single lanes and backed up for miles at rush hour, prompting people who work along there to question whether the project has stalled.

“They started off really well by ripping up the street," said Darian Tucker who owns Insignia Graphics on Prospect Avenue. "But since then, it's what you see, stalled, it seems like.”

“I haven't really seen anything else as to construction on this street," said Debbie Wilcox, who works at a business on Prospect Avenue. "Traffic is horrible."

A resurfacing project on Prospect started early July. At that time, crews contracted by the Ohio Department of Transportation resurfaced the north side of the street from East 22nd to Ontario Street. But that side, which has hundreds of cones sitting on it, is still not open. Since construction began, traffic has been reduced to single lanes on the south side of Prospect. That side still needs to be resurfaced.

The day Cleveland's East Side and West Side were linked 100 years ago (Vintage photos)

By Alison Grant, The Plain Dealer

on October 02, 2015 at 9:45 AM, updated October 02, 2015 at 9:50 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On October 8, 1915, the two halves of the Detroit-Superior Bridge came together when the last pieces of steel were dropped into the center of the arched span.

"Fits like paper on the wall," yelled Fred Buck, a superintendent for one of the construction companies, who rushed to his office for a box of cigars to distribute to the iron workers who'd built the span at  lightening speed in 37 days, according to a history of the bridge by engineer and former Clevelander William Beyer.

A lot of work preceded linking the steel arch -- driving pilings and building footings for piers on either side of the Cuyahoga River and for roadways leading to the bridge. And there was much work to come -- construction of massive concrete arches on either side of the river and of approaches for streetcars and autos. It was November 1917 before the upper deck opened to cars and pedestrians. Streetcars crossed the lower deck in December.
