I assume you're referring only to stores still in business, in which case Saks Fifth Ave. would (as far as I know) be the only addition to the NYC list (maybe Bergdorf's or Takashimaya?). But I would be remiss if I didn't make mention of my all-time favorite (seriously) NYC...uuhh..."specialty" store--the great Jacks 99 Cent Store on 32nd St. (two blocks south of Macy's). This should be on every visitors "to do" list! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/fkYtakbJ1CqBjwNRCprVDQ?select=Qg3p3Y6qv7VnEgS6bKL-_w

Houston has only one macy's downtown. and none of the stores listed for houston are in downtown.

In NYC:  add, Bendels, Barney's, Bloomingdales and Bergdorf-Goodman

In Chicago:  Add Bloomingdales

I could go on, but that would take a lot of work.

Miami, FL - Macy's

My bad...I thought the Galleria was downtown. Fixed.

I was trying to forget the awful cladding on the Richmond E-B.

Was the Miami's formerly Burdine's?

As in, there are errors, or you have more insight...come on, you know you wanna...

Correct

He's got insight, trust me on that one...

Philadelphia - Macy's

Cincinnati - T.J. Maxx

San Francisco has:

Macy's, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Barney's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale.  That's it for the big fancy stores.

OK....first of what is your definition of a "Department Store"?  Are you including Targets, Wal-Marts, Bradlees; Kmart, TJMaxx, Bed, Ames, Caldo, Bath and Beyond, etc?  Those are really "discount stores" or oversized drug stores masquarading as department stores.

In my opinion the following are department stores:

Macy's

Saks Fifth Avenue

Neiman Marcus/Bergdorf Goodman (NM owns BG)

Sears

JC Penney's

Barney's

Dillard's

Nordstrom

Bloomingdale's

Lord & Taylor (America's oldest department store)

They are the only department stores left standing

Many of the departments store buildings of old are still standing yet their original/previous tenants name sakes are no longer around, except here in cyberspace.

Example

Cleveland:  Higbee's or Halle's.

NY:  A&S or Bambergers

Phily:  Strawbridge, Gimbels or Wanamaker's

San Fran:  I. Magnin

LA:  Bullock's

Detroit:  Hudson's

Atlanta:  Rich's or Davidson's

Baltimore:  Hecht's

Houston:  Foley's

Pittsburgh:  Horne's and Kauffman's

Columbus:  Lazarus

Miami:  Burdine's

Those are the only stores I could think of off the top of my head.

thank you, oh wise one!

Lastly, Saks can be added to NYC & Chicago

I Chicago: I believe Carson's in the Loop has closed, or soon will; and does Water Tower still have a Lord & Taylor?

Did Water Tower ever have a Lord & Taylor?  What was Marshall Field's is now Macy's.

L&T left the water tower after/near Thanksgiving '06, if my memory serves me correctly.

I was being snarky about TJ Maxx. . . it replaced Gidding-Jenny which was a classic high-class department store. . .

Chicago also has a Barneys

Good Lord.  How did I miss that?!  So do Boston and Seattle.

I'm not really a big fan of big department stores. I feel like Cincinnati's downtown Macys could be a lot more. I wish d/t Cinci and Columbus could pull a Neiman Marcus.

Cincinnati: Shillito

I added the bottom 2 to the list. Assuming what I was assuming you were pointing out.

add Nordstrom to Chicago.

Carson's in the Loop is gone, so is Lord and Taylor from WTP.  There used to be a Carsons or Lord and Taylor near Sears Tower too but I haven't been over that way for awhile.

Yeah, I've been clamoring for a N-M in Cleveland forever. But nobody I clamor to listens (no, the jewelry store doesn't count!).

I need a Zodiac! Those popovers are the best. And the Zodiac burger is unbelievable. Come to think of it, keep the store, just bring the restaurant. None of the clothes they sell fit me anyway. I'm less Prada and Zegna and really more Rochester Big & Tall.

Why come you hatin' on Target? :-) (On a side note, they run a wonderful downtown store in Minneapolis). In all honesty, the mid-scale/discount dept. store definition is becoming so blurred, I guess we'd have to include Target, K-Mart and Wal-Mart in the list too. I know the first two have downtown locations, but what about Wal-Mart?

Yeah, which is why we're going with active stores in downtown areas. Even if the name has changed.

Indy has a Nordstrom

Columbus Indiana - Sears

Neiman Marcus is OK.  I only really like the Christmas catalogue.

I'd rather Cleveland got a Bloomingdales and Barney's downtown.  I would kill to have a Prada in Downtown Cleveland.  Why are the fashion God's so mean to me!  ugh!!

I'm not hating on TarJay!  It's not a department store to me.

If you're going with active stores, I've listed all that still exist.

NYC has a JC Penny's being built in the Manhattan Mall currently.

...but it (Penny's) won't be open until Summer of '09.

PS. does anyone know what became of the May Company--one of the large Cleve. department stores (probably the largest--I know the downtown flagship closed; but I believe it was also big in other cities around the country)? Taken over by Macy's? Federated? (I'm too lazy to Google it--MTS should know)

Lord...

I should have added that to my earlier list.  Good looking out EV!

May Co (accross the country) and O'neils we're rolled in to Kauffmans or other larger regional chains held by May Co..

you're right, Kaufmann's sounds familiar (but I think I had heard that my onetime nearest-to-my-hometown May Co. branch--at the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor OH--is now Macy's. whatever)

Also, I don't know how "small-townish" the department store list can get, but in the northeastern part of Ohio--including Painesville, Ashtabula, Madison and into the Youngstown area--one of the upscale stores (okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch) of the great department store era was The Carlisle-Allen Company. Come on, someone must have heard of it!!

Carlisle's wasn't in Downtown Youngstown, Strouss' and McKelvy's (later higbee's) were. All the former Kaufmann's that remained opened are now Macy's stores.

Carlisle's had a store briefly in the Boardman Plaza on RT 224.

Yes when May Department Stores (the owner of the May Co. nationwide) was bought by Federated many of the remaining May Co. turned into (via two or three name changes) gawd awful Macy's!

Preach on!! Fields, Kaufmanns forever! :-)

No, I didn't think Carlisle's was in downtown Youngstown, I just remember there were one or two stores in the general area. I think there was a branch in Niles (don't know if that's the one you were referring to, not being too familiar with that neck-o'-the-woods).

Kaufmanns?  ugh.  As if that is any better?  Let me stop myself now.

Don't forget about Montgomery Ward, they had many downtown locations.
