Here's my third and final set from my trip to Pittsburgh today.  These photos are from the South Side neighborhood.

My Mt. Washington and Bloomfield photos have been posted on UO.  Again, if anyone wants a link to the set of full-size photos (or any others of mine), just drop me a PM and I'll gladly share.

See the guy is the green?  He was part of a group of about eight people who were begging for money for beer.  Their pitch was something like, "Hey, I'm not going to bullsh!t you...I was wondering if you could spot me some money for booze."  And it worked!  One of them had a cardboard sign they were showing cars.  And boy, did they smell terrible!

Yes, these cars are parked in the middle of the street.  There's a hospital behind me.

South Side Works, a new lifestyle center development that integrates pretty well into the East Carson streetscape.

Funny thing is that the independents down at the other end of Carson seemed to be getting the majority of business.  South Side Works was incredibly empty.

Great stuff!

Everything is of such an intimate scale.

Nice set of photos!  I always enjoy visiting Pittsburgh.  The city has a very blue collar feel, in a good way.

as many times as I've been there... I've never noticed Karwoski's Tavern

I love the Carson street business district, but I find most of Pittsburgh's housing stock to be pretty ugly with siding and awnings.

Good tour. South Side is best at night, especially on weekends; lots of activity, lots of neon.

My impression is that it's typical of the city's blue-collar housing, not pretty, but the people who live there take care of their properties and are decent folks. The siding and awnings were all the latest back when there were lots of industrial jobs that paid good money; now, the people who live there are doing what they can to get by, and they take care of their neighborhoods despite that they can't afford expensive restorations.

tell me you went to Fat Heads to eat.

It is just me, or those that lifestyle center look just like Crocker Park?

Out of curiousity, what time of day/week were you there? I was there on a Sunday AM and it was teeming with people...a real head sctracher.

^ Peabody, nope, I didn't stop at Fat Heads.  Why, is it good?

South Side Works looks exactly like Crocker Park.  Mostly all of the same set of tenants, as well.  Funny thing is that it was pretty dead, while the independents on Carson were hoppin'.

I was in South Side and Mt. Washington Tuesday afternoon, and I hit Bloomfield and Oakland in the evening.

fatsheads is great. I am sure Melt was somewhat inspired by it. Great sandwiches and beer. It the FEB project supposed to be like South Side Works?  I am OK with some national retailers for clothing, but the rest is really not my cup of tea. I loved all those indies on the southside. A lot of odd ball little stores that seemed to be appreciated.
