Oh man! That pic with a lot of people walking down Euclid sure did remind me when that was a normal sight. Miss those days.

Actually, I remember, when the sidewalks were jammed, enough to limit your walking speed (50's).

^ oh wow i can only imagine in the 50s, maybe you or others can say a tipping point went it got quiet, but i can recall the 70s and i recall it still being quite busy then with the dept stores and bonds and the like.

goid news is i think its well on its way back with more people yet to come. the good bones are right there and that is getting attention.

Sadly, the old department stores: May's, Halle's, Higbees, Taylor's (666 Euclid), Bonwit's, and Sterling Linder Davis are all kaput.  What's replaced them is very thin.

So we now have Steve Harvey, Drew Carey, and Travis Kelce representing us Clevelanders as TV gameshow hosts

Not sure if there's a better thread for this, but there's a new push to get Cleveland a new, more modern flag.

Calling all vexillographers! Cleveland group seeks designs for new city flag

The CLE Flag Project co-organizer Brian Lachman said the current design — a red, white and blue block pattern with the city’s seal in the center established in 1896 — is “unattractive” and outdated, and his group wants to create something recognizable.

...

Once final designs are picked, Clevelanders will vote on their favorite before organizers present it to Cleveland City Council for approval this fall.

Those interested in submitting a design may visit cleflag.org.

Interesting, seems like they've done a bit of a rebranding with this competition. Previously they tried to get traction with their own designs. It looks like they've scrubbed all references to those designs to not distract from the competition, but they can still be found here if anyone's curious.

Edit: I like 11, 13, 16, 19, and the alternate color for 9. I'm guessing someone will submit all of their original submissions, I'd be interested to hear what other people's thoughts are, but maybe this should get its own thread?

I like the current flag, it’s just not very prominently used. “Progress and Prosperity” is a great slogan. All of the flags in the link look AI generated

^ Agree 100%. Absolutely nothing wrong with the current flag. I’ve no problem if it does change, but can’t help feeling it’s not exactly a priority.

My hovercraft is full of eels

The current Cleveland flag basically incorporates pieces of clip art thrown together with words, both of which a flag should not have; just basic principles of vexillology. It definitely could use a change. I agree it's not a priority, but flag redesigns have been good for civic pride (see Milwaukee). The current flag is not worthy of something people would want to have at their houses or notice and appreciate throughout the city. Something striking and new would do the trick.

NAVA recently did a study and ranking of city flags, here are the top-rated ones: https://nava.org/2022-survey

Also, I'll throw in Milwaukee's new flag too because it received the most national attention for its redesign (which is beautiful btw):

Ohio City is a good example of this, the Ohio City flag is peppered throughout the neighborhood. I'm not sure I've seen the Cleveland flag flying in any other neighborhoods in the same way.

I don’t think they had clip art in 1896. This is all obviously subjective, but I don’t like any of those flags. They look like Game of Thrones house banners if the show took place in outer space or the 1970s.

there does seem to be some groupthink in the vexillographer community. all new flag designs look like they were designed by the same ad agency

I have an Ohio City flag I took with me to hang in my apartment in another city and I never even lived there 😃

Also, anytime I have seen a Cleveland flag flown I hear someone ask why the French flag is up.

I don’t think it’s unique enough to stand out.

Toledo and hometown Terre Haute, Ind. are also in the process of developing new city flags.

I can't recall another time when so many cities were redesigning their flags - what's going on?

Agreed, the "flag rules" are treated as rules when they should be treated as guidelines. In my personal opinion, the best flags usually break one of these supposed rules (though bad flags generally break most of them).  Breaking one rule in a smart manner is helpful to looking unique and interesting, disregarding them entirely pretty much always results in a messy, nondescript flag.

Far too many of these newly designed flags look basically the same. As you put it, designed by the same ad agency. But it's not really their fault. If you rigidly follow every rule for good flag design I've ever seen, the aesthetic is basically ascribed by those same rules. Hence why I'd recommend picking one rule and tastefully breaking it.

If anyone doesn't know what I'm taking about you can dive down the rabbit hole here, they link to design recommendations.

https://www.cleflag.org/cleflag-submit-a-flag-design

It may not be that limiting if you stick to only one set of flag rules, but once you start trying to make a flag that aligns with everyone's recommendations, you are effectively pigeon holed into one style, and that is the style we've been seeing a lot these last few years. (Not that it's bad, it's just getting repetitive).

-------

The contrast between the City flag and the Ohio City flag is the best demonstration of why the Cleveland flag isn't a good flag. No one flies the City of Cleveland flag. The proof is in the pudding. It doesn't serve as a good symbol of the city. I'd bet a large majority of the city's residents can't even recognize the flag. @Enginerd is right on the money, they probably think it's the French flag. I had no idea what it was the first time I saw it and had to look it up.

OK. I can’t be the only one reading all this and thinking…

^ Excellent! I may have gone if I’d known about it. That said, by the looks of it, I’d have been 20+ years older than anyone else there.
Cleveland has a very solid hardcore scene. My personal favorites are Yambag, although I’m not sure if they’re still a thing as I haven’t noticed them play anywhere since I last saw them, supporting Melt-Banana in 2022.

I agree--they're all really boring and stupid looking. I hope no one in city government gives this any seriousness. I like the current flag.

Even moreso on the east side, where the lakeshore curves north.

It's possible the shoreline would be more appreciated if not for the scary upside down ghost ships :-)
