flashback to 90s school skate parties there

That was Brook Park Skateland for me - RIP!

Roller skating was a good way to meet a member of the opposite sex. My future parents met at Skateland on Euclid. Are there any roller rinks left in NE Ohio?

My experience was a little different - when I heard the DJ announce "slow skate, all skate, LADIES CHOICE" (aka ladies picked a guy to skate with along with whatever REO Speedwagon ballad), I made a beeline for the arcade area. In a somewhat related note, the soundtrack to 'Xanadu' was one of my favorites and for years I was reigning champ/high scorer on Ms. Pac-Man 🏳️‍🌈

I remember it well.  I skated there quite often in my youth.  Rich Broglio at the organ.

I also skated at the Rollercade on Denison Ave as a very young child in the early 60s.

^^^ Pla-Mor in Euclid is still active, but it's had serious violence problems in recent years.  EPD's likely been there more than to any bar, even the Triple Deuce.

For the full patriotic stars and stripes decor - Country Skateland between Oberlin and Wellington in southern Lorain County.  $7 to skate and $3 for skate rental... and they do all night skates a few times a year... and no website.

That's too bad.  I spent a lot of time at the RollerDrome (as it was called).  I remember there was a little booth in the corner that the music would be played from.  My memories of the place are fading, but I thought there was a keyboard or organ in there at one point?

Plus when I was a kid, I had the names of the arcade game cabinets there memorized.  I even knew the order at one point!  Ahhh to be young!

I love how "urban_cleveland_retro" watermarked over a shutterstock watermark. Yeesh.

Here's the link to the shutterstock archives: https://www.shutterstock.com/video/search/cleveland-1968, I'm sure with a little bit of searching you'd find the library or other public sources have these without the watermarks.

Group pursuing new Cleveland flag not waiting for formal adoption

This effort to create a new flag for Cleveland has been so non-transparent.  The public was never part of the process to narrow down the options that were sent to them and when the 3 finalists were chosen some of them were designed by the actual team hosting the contest.

I personally do not understand why there is a need to replace the current flag.  If you haven't seen the 3 options + the original flag  I have attached the finalists

Supposedly the 6-sided star is to remind us that we were the sixth largest city at one point of our history. To me that star represents Chicago and also is a sad reminder of what we once were compared to now.  There isn't any historic meaning to these proposals

Before their rebrand they had more proposals. I don't think these were their best three. Not even close. None of these seem very Cleveland to me.

That said, I'm fully on board with replacing the current flag, it's not a good flag. People don't use or recognize it. From a distance it looks like the French flag (reversed), and there is no reason for that design choice.

My recommendation would be to go back to the beginning and have the public submit designs again.

Touché

The three designs are not inspiring civic pride in me but the current flag is terrible and does not hold up to vexillological standards whatsoever - it definitely needs replaced. If I had to pick one of the three options it would be the green and navy blue coastline, but I think the colors would need changed.

This was my submission for what its worth:

Cleflag.org set up a contest for the redesign of flag of Cleveland. They surveyed 600 residents to gain their input on colors symbols etc.

To start things off, I wanted to pay homage to the Ohio burgee. This shape is instantly recognizable by just about every American. If someone were to see this flag outside of Cleveland, they would immediately be able to assume it is one of the major cities of Ohio.

Adding to the last point, the "C" on the flag, is reminiscent of the iconic Colorado State Flag, allows the viewer to assume it is one of the "Three C's" of Ohio. Many of the designs include a symbol of industry such as a cog/gear, hammer, etc. However, similar to your websites point on sports team colors, the industry can leave as well. For the most part, it already has. I think a more timeless symbol would suit the design better.

I agree with the survey responders that Blue (Royal), Green (Irish), and White (Optic) all represent the iconic qualities of Cleveland. Blue representing Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. Green representing the renowned Metroparks system, and the two White stripes symbolizing the East and West sides of the City. This was inspired by the white found on the Chicago flag representing their three sides of town.

With Chicago on our minds, the memorable stars fill out this concept quite nicely. I have included 6 stars representing Cleveland's historic nickname as "The Sixth City." This calls back to the boom that put Cleveland on the map. Also, several local businesses, i.e. Sixth City Cycles, have adopted this nickname. I think it would "click" nicely with residents.

Overall, I think the design is simple enough to pass the "squint" and "child" tests. The colors are distinct enough to stand out and still pass the "grayscale" test. And there is enough meaning packed into one flag that I can type all of this!

Let me know what you think!

I think it would be cool if you disguised the C a bit blending it into the stripes. Super quick, super rough sketch just to make my intent clear. Polished up I think it would look better.

Thoughts? Intended as a purely positive critique, I like the design for the most part.

Edit: it also now evokes a bit of a mechanical key shaft, so it could double as a subtle nod to our industrial history.

This was my submission - solely an effort to raise Cleveland's abysmal voter turnout, nothing more...

I'm no artist but my choice would be a thin green bottom a dark aqua middle and a sky blue top with either the water crib or a boat between the aqua and the blue.

A product of The Electric Neon Clock Company out of Cleveland, Ohio, the design was patented in 1940, and came with the option to top the clock with a company name to give it a more personalized feel; models now fetch upwards of $3,000 apiece.

I've seen the one on the upper left flying around and IMO it's the worst by far.   It looks like something from a third world marxist nation.

Saw these on FB late last night, courtesy of Drone Ohio. I really really want to see these old buildings restored to compliment the all the new development going on...easy to envision a boardwalk there up along future storefronts or residential. I wonder if we will see a more comprehensive vision of those adjacent areas at some point.

Jake and Logan Paul Hit the Limits of the Manosphere

John Hendrickson

Thu, March 27, 2025

In the opening minutes of the new reality show Paul American, Jake Paul torches a fat wad of $100 bills. The jacked and tatted YouTuber turned boxer flirts with the camera as he shoots promos for, in a meta twist, the show you’re already watching. (The money is fake.) Jake and his older brother, Logan, a YouTuber turned pro wrestler, are the stars and executive producers of the cocksure Max series chronicling their family’s exploits. “Like if the Kardashians were combat fighters—that’s really what we have here,” is how Jake puts it during a pitch meeting. Against a backdrop of podcasts, private jets, McMansions, and shameless shilling (body spray and energy drinks), the brothers steamroll their way through daily life.

The series is a slick attempt by two giants of the so-called manosphere—the loose network of podcasts and YouTube channels by, for, and about testosterone-laced males—to conquer the cultural mainstream. And yet, in setting out to build their macho fantasy, the Pauls may have also revealed the manosphere’s intellectual limits. Paul American shows Jake, 28, and Logan, 29, discovering that a crucial part of a hetero male’s existence is learning to live with his female equal.

^ Some questionable choices in there for sure.  Not sure Garfield Heights, Euclid, or Richmond Heights are very high on any list of great communities.  All have dated housing stock and declining financials.  I'd rank Parma abovea any of them, but it didn't make the list.
Also notably absent from the list are Cleveland Heights... Brecksville... University Heights...

^I kept seeing this on socials - does anyone actually know or care about this "comedian"?

Haha well, I went to a sold out Jim Gaffigan show at the State theater on Saturday which I'm sure was much more enjoyable for everyone involved 😝
