Seriously?  It certainly isn't Mentor!

I gave my cousin and her husband a gift certificate to Lola for Christmas this year and the first thing out of her mouth was "Ooooo but it's not safe downtown". And she lives behind Lake Catholic in Mentor.

Yea my experience has been that people from Lake County are the most afraid of downtown.  I had a buddy who took a girl to prom from Cathedral Latin and drove her through downtown.  She was absolutely terrified!

huh?? I grew up in Lake County and I remember people going into Cleveland all the time to shop, etc. Then again, I date back to the 60's (the Pleistocene era ) when there were still major dept. stores downtown; although people were leery of the Hough area in the late 60's because of the riots. (It just dawned on me how woefully outdated my perceptions are. I guess I didn't realize how things have really changed in the last few decades).

That kind of mentality happens everywhere.  I still want to beat my head when people argue with me because I say that Ohio State's south campus didn't need to be bulldozed, maybe helped out, but not bulldozed.

Then they tell me how bad and dangerous it was.  When I ask them if they had ever actully been there, the answer is always no.

So, no, its not just a Cleveland thing.

Now that googlemaps updated the street view for many of the city's intersections, there are several such before and after experiences.  A great reminder about awesome changes to our city in the last few years that we so often take for granted as soon as construction is completed.

There is one of these for Battery Park as well -

Click on link and move back one.  Same thing with the intersection behind it.

While you were outside having drinks on East Fourth Street, those of us here in Seattle have been enjoying the 30 degree mornings and the 40's/50's rainy outdoor cafe scene.  We still haven't hit 70 degrees.  Not atypical for a Seattle spring.  Although, we can still go skiing!

Lots of good stuff along Euclid. Struck by 1. How I can understand people's frustration with the construction and 2. How worth it it was in the end. There's lots of activity captured ... old CSU Student Center v. New One + Collegetown, 668 getting a facelift, the Cancer Center going up at UH. I thought this one was pretty stunning ... the "after" almost looks like a rendering to me: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.503469,-81.621479&spn=0,0.002108&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=41.503463,-81.621677&panoid=jky5PYlE6WnIxoGAMa-sng&cbp=12,63.61,,0,-0.24.

Re: Diversity. I only read the first 7 pages of the thread but I didn't see anyone mention that area that I call "Little Lebanon". Around West 125th and Lorain Road. It is probably more of a "Little Middle East" but the restaurant I ate at there served Lebanese food so I call it Little Lebanon.

2nd: We also have the highest concentration of Peregrine Falcons within this county then anywhere else in the Midwest.

Columbus has one nest. Cincy has 2, Toledo has 2. Cleveland has 6, the county has 9.

Welcome Peregrine!

Do you still have a nest perched on top of the Terminal Tower?

Thanks for the welcome Hts121.

*I* don't have a nest perched on the *13th* floor of Terminal Tower. We do. ;)

I am just someone that helps monitor some of the nests around town. Just a volunteer. The second link I posted is the WebCam that broadcasts the nest (actually called an eyrie) on TT. We have 3 eggs this year that should be hatching soon!!

welcome Peregrine! My HS mascot was a falcon, so I'll always be one! :)

I've never found much in the way of gems in little lebanon area in terms of restaurants, but some of the shops are great.  Spices for next to nothing, odd sized pans that go well with my style of cooking (greek/mediterranean), good addition to the list.

Yea, I have to admit I love ethnic food. Indian is my favorite. I didn't want to bias anyone about Lebanese food but in all honesty.... I kind of hated it. lol

I try to love Indian, but it's just something I rarely eat and enjoy.  I like thai curries much more than Indian.  I say that, of course, as I sit here eating a red curry frozen dinner but that is more of a cost-controlled nutrition and calorie delivery system than my choice of a fantastic lunch.

ummmm spicy food!  love it.

I swear, the one thing I don't like about UO, you people publicizing my dumpster diving haunts!  Can you people keep secrets?!

Shaquille O'Neal says he 'loves' Cleveland and hungers to end city's title drought: Cavaliers Insider

ATLANTA -- It may never truly be his home, but over the last nine months Shaquille O'Neal said he's developed a special feeling for Cleveland and especially Richfield Township, where he's rented a house.

"I must say I'm very, very impressed and surprised at how Cleveland has been. Me only having been in a sunny environment, I wasn't sure how it would go. But I'm having a fabulous time. If they want me back, I'll be back [next season].

i was laid off at nat city/pnc recently and it was really hard to find a job in cleveland, so i had to move to columbus where i did find a new job before my layoff date at pnc. i lived in cleveland for 4 years in coventry and ohio city. i explored the city on foot, bike, public transit and car. i am really really going to miss the city and all it has to offer. i'll miss walking to the westside market on saturday mornings. i will miss going to lolita at happy hour. i will miss taking my dog to the tremont dog park and dropping him off at the mutt hutt before work knowing he was going to have a great day. i will miss walking around in the flats on a saturday afternoon and it feeling like no one is around for miles. i'll really miss my daily walks around ohio city with my dog and all the random people i ran across every day who remembered me and would say hello. i'll miss riding my bike to voinovich park in the summer and watching the boats sail by. i'll miss going to sun luck garden and the wonderful food and service. i'll miss trudging through the snow from my apt to la cave du vine on a tuesday night. i'll miss sitting outside at great lakes on the patio. i'll miss having a viable public transit option to get around the city. i could go on forever. i may have only lived there for 4 years, but i feel like cleveland is a part of me, and i will really really miss it and plan on moving back as soon as i can.

dayglo, Im sorry that your situation took you away from Cleveland, and it sounds like you appreciated all it has to offer.....

Heres to your return in the hopefully not too distant future!  Best of Luck.

daygo, thanks for posting.  We all hope you are able to make it back to Cleveland again one day soon.

EDIT:  And WHEN you do make it back, we'll for sure have an "UrbanOhio Happy Hour" gathering of your choice!

I found this old promo video via a Columbus Dispatch blog. Hiliarious:

Apparently put out by a TV station in Cleveland.

Another reason to love Cleveland:  One of CSU's professors may have found a cure for cancer!  I thought this was pretty interesting, though the article is obviously short and lacking a lot of detail.  It's also from March, but someone just now sent it to me.

Has Cleveland State professor found a cure for cancer?

By Tim Botos

CantonRep.com staff writer

From the article: "In a Cleveland Clinic lab, human cancer cells were inserted into mice and allowed to grow into tumors. Kalafatis’ CancerX drug then was  injected into the tumors. Doses of the drug eradicated and reduced seven different types of cancer. All told, the drug has worked on nearly 60 types of cancer, either in a petri dish or in mice. Recently, the drug substantially reduced brain tumors created from gioblastoma cells — the kind of cancer that killed Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Most important, the drug didn’t harm surrounding healthy cells."

I still love CLE and the Cavs even if I am mad at the cavs right now. That was embarrassing.

I now remember another reason why I love Cleveland. The storms aren't nearly as bad as the rest of the Midwest. It's 5am, I've been up for the past hour and a half, and it's suposed to keep on like this for at least another 3 hours. Eff Missouri weather. I guess I should look on the bright side that I haven't heard the tornado sirens...

CBC, I thought the same thing. I used to love participating in stuff like this and I followed the link this morning and was like huh, I have no idea.

Welcome to parenthood...

I guess I will have to wait for the rate the suburbs survey and stuff the ballot box...

No favorite coffee shop?

No favorite park???

I pronounce this survey, lame.

p.s. at least for Best Suburban Hot Spot I put "Wal Mart"

Stop hatin' on us suburbians.  Hello, Huntington beach is in a suburb, and it's beautiful. So are the metroparks.

Stop hatin' on us suburbians. Hello, Huntington beach is in a suburb, and it's beautiful. So are the metroparks.

Huntington Beach doesn't hold a candle to Edgewater Park. And..the metroparks are also in the City.

Where are the metroparks in the city of Cleveland?  I am only familiar with the Rocky River and Mill Stream Run Reservations and those don't run in city of Cleveland I don't believe.  Would be good to know.

I am not a fan of Edgewater, sorry.  Every time I went there, there are a lot of guys who look like they're crusing for other men sitting in their cars by themselves, it creeps me out.

Brookside and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo are in Cleveland, as well as Garfield Park on the east side.  Also, half of the Rocky River Reservation is in Cleveland (the river is the border between Rocky River and Cleveland).

I'm not so sure about the Edgewater comment.

I don't mean to make anyone mad who likes Edgewater, I just don't go there anymore and that's why.

I know the zoo is "part" of the parks system, but when people say the metroparks, I don't think that's what they're thinking of, so I wouldn't have thought of that.  I have never been to Garfield park; is it nice?

I thought the RR Reservation was in North Olmsted, Rocky River and Lakewood? I suppose technically part of it might fall over into the city limits but I think most people would think of that as either RR/Lakewood or N Olmsted at the start and end of the reservation, no?

Take a look at any map of Cuyahoga County and you'll see that the City borders a good amount of the metro parks.

The upper portion of Edgewater is expansive, active and offers the best views in the city. Huntington is dominated by a parking lot and doesn't provide much space to enjoy yourself. The beach is ok, but there are no views.

They're both nice beaches.  Let's be done with the pointless fight!

Agreed!

I definitely know what you mean.  Last time I used the men's room at Edgewater I had to give a very determined "no really, I'm just here to use the bathroom" look to a disappointed guy hanging out in there.  Perhaps I flatter myself by assuming he was disappointed.  But anyway, I'll go with Wade Oval as my favorite park.

my head hurts from reading this....

To be fair, I've also seen these guys at the metroparks in a variety of areas but it's easy enough to leave and move on to another spot since there are so many places to alight along the reservations.  It really, really, really annoys me but WTF can you do?  You can't report someone to the police for sitting in their car looking lecherous.  But it annoys me even more now that I'm a parent.  You know, can't you just go home and whack off to the internet or meet in a motel?  Why do you have to ruin nice parks with your sleazy behavior?

Not an excuse but this happens in many parks in many cities.  Remember the old parma dude who was arrested last year for this same thing?

It takes a strong park movement.  If the edgewater had a conservancy (and I pray this post doesn't lead to someone add on with an even longer post) to help clean, coordinate park functions with the neighborhood and market the park that wouldn't happen or it would not be so obvious.

Oh, don't pick on RnR too much.  We like her.  Besides, I don't think any of us can truly state that we don't appreciate a jaunt out of the concrete jungle every once in a while.

LOL.  Perhaps an opportunity for me to start a new board.  I'm sure you'd all be pleased.

R@R, your definately correct about Edgewater, and yes it has a reputation for that.  Im sure not everyone (hopefully) would notice though, although I think its pretty obvious, but then.......

In regards to Metroparks, while situated in the southeast microburbs, the Washington Reservation and the Ohio & Erie Canal both are pretty accessible from the Near East Side ... I think a lot of us forget we have Metroparks access in the E. 40s ... including a pretty freaking amazing stretch of bikeway that wanders through nature and industry and plops you onto the Towpath. And with all the thoughtful cycling plans of CDCsof the Towpath and its feeders, we should see increasing connectivity between the Metroparks and neighborhoods like Tremont, Old Brooklyn and Slavic Village.

I thought the RR Reservation was in North Olmsted, Rocky River and Lakewood? I suppose technically part of it might fall over into the city limits but I think most people would think of that as either RR/Lakewood or N Olmsted at the start and end of the reservation, no?

RR Reservation is accessible from Westpark (Hogsback Rd, right near the lakewood border and also off of Mastick/Puritas) in addition to Lakewood, Rocky River, Fairview Park and North Olmstead.  Not sure which city the park land actually resides in.

I only tease about suburbs. ;) I grew up in them, but now live in Cleveland (Westpark).

Don't forget the 3rd "Westpark" entrance behind my house (and behind Fairview Hospital) although it is closed now while they replace that bridge.

;)

I could be wrong but I thought the river itself WAS the border of Cleveland/Fairview, and Rocky River/Lakewood. Can't seem to find concrete proof of that though.
