Is NY the Bruce Jenner of sports towns? Even Cleveland pities us

By Mike VaccaroNovember 17, 2014 | 8:26pm

Clockwise from top left: Carmelo Anthony, Joe Girardi, Rex Ryan, Deron Williams, David Wright and Eli Manning

Everywhere but here — they pity us now.

They do. It’s true. Big, bad, New York? Mighty Gotham? Just another cow town with new stadiums nobody wanted with teams nobody wants to watch. It isn’t so much that the mighty have fallen, it’s that the mighty have become mites, worthy of the kind of sad head-shakes that Bruce Jenner must see a lot these days.

Good God — does that make us the Bruce Jenner of sports towns?

I spent the past week among an eclectic mixture of sports fans from around the country. In the past, all it would take was the proud declaration of home — NEW YORK!!! (extra exclamation points unnecessary, but assumed) — and there was a hush. Home of the Yankees. Home of the Giants. Home of more championships than we could count, and more disposable dollars to ensure a prosperity of permanence.

Now?

Meet Duke. He’s 64, he lives in a suburb of Cleveland, been rooting for those teams his whole life. He was 14 the last time one of those teams — the Browns — won a championship.

He lived and died with Bernie Kosar and Ernest Byner, with Jose Mesa and the ’97 Indians, with LeBron the first time around. Has the scars to prove it. But Duke is serene now.

“It’ll happen soon,” he said, sipping his Cuban rum poolside, enjoying his cigar, smiling. “Maybe it’ll be the Browns. The Indians are solid now. But, if not, LeBron will get it done for us in a year or two. We’re in a good place.”

Then a rueful shake of the head.

“I’m not sure when we’ll be able to say that about you.”

Yes: Cleveland is feeling sorry for us. Dogs and cats, living together, total chaos.

Cleveland On The Rise: Fun, Film, Food and the Law

https://www.law.csuohio.edu/alumnigiving/cle/cleontherise

I saw NEOMG was live blogging from this event, but allow me to give a quick recap of some notes I took.  It was a great event with lots of fanfare for the City, but not terribly informative for the UO crowd (considering it was an all day event).

FILM PANEL

- There have been 237 films shot in the State since 2007

- $300m in economic development in NEO alone since 2007

- HOWEVER, we have lost approx. $500m we could have earned due to a lack of infrastructure (sound stages, etc) - movies such as Captain America 3, Ant Man, and a few Pixel films would have been shot here if we had the proper infrastructure

- 80% of the film work in Ohio has been right here in NEO, mostly due to our ability to double as NYC and other mega cities

RECREATION PANEL

- There was a video presentation I hadn't seen before which was good, other than the musical backdrop to that poppy "Boom-Clack" song

- Metroparks now has 500+acres along the waterfront

- 2013 was the largest land acquisition year for the metroparks since 1961

- A good portion of the panel was spent discussing progress on the Red Line Greenway, which is coming together nicely - site tours are available

- The Red Line Greenway has what one panelist described as the highest elevated greenway in the USA

EVENTS PANEL

- Gay games brought 20K visitors and over $50m in economic input

- City is expecting Federal grants to cover the bulk of the cost for the RNC, as was done in Charlotte and Tampa this last cycle

- Cleveland was the unanimous choice for the RNC site selection committee (at least that is what our locals heard)

- RNC is planning lots of events in UC

- They showed the video which was presented to the site selection committee and it was pretty good

- RNC will have 15K credentialed media members (compared to 5K for a Super Bowl)

- RNC/DNC are the largest media events in the world outside of the Olympics

- $30m in infrastructure improvements will be made to allow all of the data to flow in and out of the City during the RNC

- During the RNC, 10x the amount of data will come out of the Q as compared to a Game 7 of the NBA finals

- The new convention center was the first project of its size to scrap paper blueprints and use IPads during construction

- The CC has held over 200 events since opening in 2013

- 72 trade shows/conventions have been booked since the announcement of the RNC

- There have been 200m 'media impressions' in the four months since the RNC was announced

- There was some mention of the need for a media center during the RNC and "Gateway East"(?) was thrown out there as a possibility

FRED NANCE

- He talked us through our lunch hour

- He said that Gateway started it all with the trend in downtown towards public money spurring private investment

- He showed a GCP video I don't think we have seen here

- He mentioned that he was interviewed for 2 hours by the NYT on Cavs opening night about "all things happening in Cleveland"..... he hasn't seen the article yet but predicted it is going to be a "really comprehensive piece"

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PANEL

- Coyne talked about what he called the 'proximity principle' and the key being getting young people to move downtown

- He compared Public Square + the Malls and their 24 acres to the 25 acre Millennium Park in Chicago (just really from a scope/size angle)

- More landscaping is coming of the Malls, although Mall C might remain more open due to the use for Ultimate Frisbee and other activities

- The location of the pedestrian bridge is 'fixed' but the design is not

- Coyne thinks Burke will remain an airport

- Coyne will 'occupy' the Jacobs owned lot on PS if something is not developed there once PS is done.... he has told the owners of his intention to do so

- The two people behind Hingetown (Graham and Marika) gave an entertaining presentation, showing the progress in the neighborhood, including 265 new units planned in the next 5 years and a 50% reduction in crime and foreclosures since they got started

FOOD PANEL

- Cimperman was on this panel, along with some of the local restaraunters (Symon's business guy, Hodgson, and the owner of Toast)

- By requiring the Farmer's Markets to accept food stamps, business has increased 250%

- There are now over 100 food trucks in the City

- When asked about the parking issues in the Market District, Cimperman said that while parking is important, neighborhoods with parking problems have both a low foreclosure rate and lower crime.

- Coyne will 'occupy' the Jacobs owned lot on PS if something is not developed there once PS is done.... he has told the owners of his intention to do so

Hahah nice - I'll join him.

Verbally nice recap Hts. What exactly does he mean that he will "occupy" the Jacobs owned lot if nothing is done with it after the square is finished?

It means Tony Coyne and I will grow giant beards, stop showering, and live out of a tent on the Jacobs lot.

Well I liked Cleveland before it was cool... :D

Who Knew Cleveland Was Cool? Quite a Few Good Writers

It’s clear when I look at Google Analytics that when we run a piece about old train stations, anybody interested in train stations is going to read that piece. Or anybody interested in Lebron [James] or sports is going to read our sports coverage. Then you also have all the Rust Belt expatriates. They went to the Sun Belt; they went to the coasts; they’re fascinated by what’s going on at home. We’ve now gotten to a point where if a topic is interesting to someone, they’ll find us and not think, “Oh, this is some tiny little Cleveland thing.” We have a huge number of readers who are very invested, and some of them tend to think more regionally. But city loyalties run very deep.

I was thinking the same thing. How does one even think that is a valid stat to include on a list like this? Especially considering all the other things she could have written about. Also not one, but two mentions of rock and roll...ugh

Cleveland still rocks, but it also does so much more

Much like Buffalo, Cleveland has gotten a bad rap over the years. But the naysayers are wrong; there’s plenty to see and do in the Queen City’s Lake Erie neighbor

By Mark Sommer | News Staff Reporter

You may want to stick up for Cleveland the next time you hear someone snicker at the city naysayers call the “Mistake on the Lake.”

After all, Cleveland shares much in common with Buffalo, its Rust Belt neighbor on Lake Erie, 195 miles to the east.

Both cities have top-notch architecture, museums, concert halls, symphony orchestras, parks, professional baseball stadiums and, it must be said, long-suffering sports fans and intractable poverty.

A recent trip to Cleveland was a reminder of just how much there is to see and do there. Here are some of the things waiting to be discovered or deserving of a return visit in Cleveland:

Tale of Two Cities: Cleveland

In the past 10 years, the metro of Cleveland has become a destination of its own. It was even selected to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Downtown Cleveland has been transformed from abandoned skyscrapers, to multi-use buildings that contain luxury apartments and upscale restaurants, while still preserving historic features.

It boasts iconic architecture like the building that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, and new, modern housing to encourage living downtown.

"What's evident in Cleveland is that they were really building an empire," said DMC Master Planner Peter Cavaluzzi. "And the architecture and public spaces are really about creating a great city."...

....."I always knew that if you put the Cleveland Clinic against the Mayo Clinic we'd win every time,” said DMCC Board's R.T. Rybak. “And I always thought, 'boy we can knock Cleveland out of the park.' Not true anymore."

Oh yes they can. Bad judgment is the common currency of humans.

2014 was the year that Cleveland turned the corner in terms of reputation

If I'm not mistaken, "Positively Cleveland", a name I always found clumsy, just changed it's name to "Destination Cleveland".  Hence my comment.

These are the people who think "Rock and Roll City" is trite.

2014 was the year that Cleveland turned the corner in terms of reputation

Yep.  It's getting enough momentum that even our pack of "leaders" will have a hard time messing it up.

2014 was the year that Cleveland turned the corner in terms of reputation

I would tend to agree. The extra eyes on us for LeBron and JFF probably helped nationally to see what's going on here.

The RNC as well.

One of the most politically ignorant things I have ever heard is one of the activists saying that the issues with CPD might cause the city to lose the convention.

Really?  The Democratic convention maybe, but a city police force that might be overaggressive is not something the Republicans are going to have a problem with. Especially if it is Eric Holder defining “overaggressive”.

Indeed, that may be a big part of why Jackson is pushing back.  It’s not like him, unless he felt personally insulted by Holder (quite possible).

^Do you ever post anything but baseless speculation?

^Do you ever post anything but baseless speculation?

What's baseless?  The idea that the GOP isn't going to have a problem with an assertive police force the current Administration dislikes?  Hardly baseless.

The idea that it's rare for Frank Jackson to show a spine?  That's historical.

The idea that personal offense might cause him to?  I thought it was common knowledge that he's known for that?

The idea that Eric Holder might cause one?  He's not only Obama's "Designated <rectum>", he was Janet Reno's.  Tact isn't his strong suit.

I know one thing that Jackson, Holder and Obama have in common....

Liberal Democrats, yep.

Jackson is a democrat, but a liberal he is not.

Probably better conversation for one of the politics thread

Well there u go. We r representing Ohio on the T & L Americas favorite cities list, showing up in the top 5 in many categories.  Our talent and creativity are being noticed.

I was just at a wedding in October and some guy that use to live in Cleveland 10 years ago and now lives in Columbus kept telling me how Cleveland needs to be like Columbus. I just kind of nodded facetiously, didn't feel like reminding him his city was founded in 1992. In my opinion, the current version of Cleveland has sprung up in the last 5 years. As the leader of the GOP stated when they selected Cleveland " if you haven't been to Cleveland in the last couple of years, then you haven't been to Cleveland.

Not sure what's going on, but the total number of websites/publications for Cleveland as a world "must visit city of 2015" is up to three -- to recap:

- Travel and Leisure http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2014/12/cleveland_makes_travel_leisure.html

- Fodor's http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2014/12/cleveland_makes_fodors_must-se.html

- Buzzfeed http://www.buzzfeed.com/chelseypippin/16-places-you-simply-must-visit-in-2015

When Forbes adds Cleveland to one of its "best" lists, then you'll know the End Times are at hand! ;)
