June 17, 20177 yr i think this is old, but it popped up on reddit recently so what the heck, its pretty funny -- has anybody ever flown in to milwaukee and actually seen it?
June 17, 20177 yr I saw that a couple weeks ago. F-ing hilarious. He lives right by the airport in Milwaukee so it confuses and scares a lot of people sitting next to the window, who see it clear right before they land and think they took the wrong flight. The city tried to turn it legal and get him to stop but it never worked and he refuses to remove the lettering. It's a harmless prank. Whoever is taking those flights to Milwaukee will have a story to tell their friends.
June 29, 20177 yr Urban Hike: to water's edge ERIN O'BRIEN | THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2017 Last week, Fresh Water announced managing editor Erin O'Brien's departure. In this effort, O'Brien bids readers farewell with a good long walk along an offbeat path — one she offers as a stand in as locals eagerly await the completion of the four-phase Towpath Trail extension. Stand at the Ohio & Erie Canalway's Harvard Road trailhead next to the hulking Arconic plant (formerly Alcoa) and face north. Stretching out behind you are some 90 miles of nearly continuous all-purpose trail that winds all the way down to Tuscarawas County. And while that path is home to a veritable advent calendar of discoveries, the five miles before you are an adventure on their own. July 10, 20177 yr Cool video. It really captures the vibe! The Flats are awesome. I really need to make time to go down there soon. It's therapeutic :) There's nothing like it along the Scioto or Ohio River :) It's weird to me that so much attention is paid to the East bank. You get such an awesome view of Downtown Cleveland from the west side :-P I'd really like to experience Cleveland like that on boat. Sadly, I've never had the opportunity. Those are really beautiful views of the city. My favorite footage is on Lake Eerie in front of the Rock Hall! That would be so cool to experience that in person.

Yes David, E Rocc is right. You may not have been here a decade or so ago when the East Bank was totally dead. It was torn down in hopes of the development that Fairmount/Wolstein has not built but, because of legal and financing hassles, it was in doubt. And people were depressed remembering the good old days of the 1980s and 90s. The West Bank has pretty much been the same, esp with Shooters being the lone holdout -- along with Odeon, now, reborn on the East Bank.
July 10, 20177 yr My favorite footage is on Lake Eerie in front of the Rock Hall! That would be so cool to experience that in person. Agree! My only complaint is the Rock Hall and Science Center should be the life of the party on a Friday night - lively and full of people, not sleepy and dormant. Hopefully that can change soon.
July 10, 20177 yr ^With FEB, Ohio City, Tremont, WHD, Gateway/E. 4th and more lately, Playhouse Square, jumping esp on weekends, I don't know if we'll have enough restaurant/party crowd to go around.

July 10, 20177 yr Just a note that I was in the Cleve last week, and as I often do, posted every minute of the trip on Facebook. The weather this past week made nearly every shot of the city and the lake postcard worthy! Our Cleveland impressed a lot of my friends!

The weather this past week made nearly every shot of the city and the lake postcard worthy! Our Cleveland impressed a lot of my friends! The growth in Cleveland, entertainment and residentially, has been exponential in recent years. People who's most recent impression of the City from even just a few years ago is dated... When I show people stills and videos of the Flats, esp the new FEB at the boardwalk, they think it's Florida, California or some similar place. (and have you seen how Margaritaville is packing them in on top of all the other FEB spots?). Euclid Avenue buzzes even on weekday nights and, of course, Public Square is amazing now -- although those concrete highway barricades for the Superior buses have taking PS down a notch imho). The energy downtown and in those key areas like Ohio City and University Circle is what I see in other towns in the East or Chicago, albeit on a lesser scale... I hate to say it, but sometimes it's hard to believe it's really Cleveland.

July 16, 20177 yr Cleveland, once called the mistake on the lake, is on the cusp of cool By Fran Golden July 16, 2017 6:00 AM I am sitting on the deck of a once-derelict building that is now the city's trendiest microbrewery, watching the sun set over old smokestacks, the arches of early 20th century bridges and a river that once burned, and I am thinking that something intriguing is happening in Cleveland. The city is getting, uh, cool. Cleveland? Yes, Cleveland. Count me among the most surprised to see amazing stuff happening in the Rust Belt. I fell for a local guy and moved here a few years ago, a baby boomer who spent 30 years in Boston, which in my mind is the center of the universe. http://www.latimes.com/travel/la-tr-cleveland-20170716-story.html
August 12, 20177 yr I Chose Cleveland Over My Ex-Boyfriend, and I Have No Regrets August 11, 2017 By Jeanne Li Cleveland is my city, my home, my direction. But for Dean, Cleveland is filled with bad memories he needs to escape. He’s lived here his whole life. He thinks he's maxed out the possibilities for new friendships and connections. He hates the small-town feel and that you can bump into a friend or acquaintance anywhere, which I adore. He needs something new, needs to leave to find purpose. I need to stay. I don’t really believe in fate, but I can only describe my time in Cleveland as one of magical serendipity. I first came to Cleveland on a whim in August 2007 to attend Case Western Reserve University. It was wonderful. I met my best friend. I got a great education. And I met Dean, who was one of the first guys to message me on OkCupid. Compared to the usual “hey girl, sup” notes, his several-paragraphs-long message was intriguing. We met at a bar a week later and shut the place down. https://www.self.com/story/i-chose-cleveland-over-my-ex
August 12, 20177 yr On a whim to attend Case? I don't think that's how their application process works.
August 12, 20177 yr ^^In general, a good article, though I didn't like her characterizing Cleveland as 'small town'. Also this: "In Cleveland, I feel like I can make a difference. This is as opposed to big-time cities I've lived in before, like Chicago, Atlanta, and Columbus, where I felt lost and invisible. " I don't know if I'd consider Atlanta "big-time", but Columbus????
August 15, 20177 yr Cleveland development corporations buy, flip abandoned homes to improve neighborhoods Awesome stuff!!

Regardless, I don't feel that happens often enough in Cleveland to put it as a primary characteristic of the city. I just ran into a HS classmate of mine I haven't seen in 20 years. He lives about 5 blocks away from me. I actually rarely run into people I know.... at least not in places I would not expect to find them.
August 16, 20177 yr I always feel that someone who is uncomfortable with a place because they might run into people they know probably has bigger problems than that place itself, at least if we're talking the scale of a city. Likely, they'll eventually find themselves not wanting to run into people they know wherever they go. edit- I bet their FB feed is full of "people so fake" memes.
August 16, 20177 yr I went to an Indians game a couple weeks back with my girlfriend and her co-workers at Cleveland Neighborhood Progress. It was really cool because it was my first Indians game. I've only been to Reds games, prior. I also got to meet all of my girlfriend's coworkers that she always raves about. I had a really good time! We were playing the Angels. Honestly, I was really surprised at how good the food was, at Progressive. I imagine Cleveland Neighborhood Progress probably got a discount on the tickets that managed to be only $25 but I actually spent double that, just on the awesome food. Before we sat at our seats, I bought us both burritos at Ohio City burritos and in the 8th inning and they were delicious. After a long, boring game, I decided to get up to get us nachos. Low and behold, I decided to go on an excursion for nachos from this place we went to in Tremont over a year ago that I can't think the name of, for the life of me, right now. I didn't get much sleep last night and my memory is shot. It's driving me nuts. After I got up in the 8th inning to get those nachos, we ended up scoring 7-8 runs and I missed the whole thing! I think the nachos were actually worth it, though. I did get to experience at least some of the glory when I made it back to my seat. That's so typically Cleveland, though. Gloriously making a come-back, at the last minute. We did the same thing, with the last Indians game I saw - CLE vs. the Colorado Rockies. Grand slams/ home runs at the last minute, when we were down and it seemed like all hope was lost. Cleveland is the comeback-kid 8-) It's fun to get to be a part of it.
August 17, 20177 yr ^ sounds like a nice time. why were you surprized about how good the food was? dont you go very often? all ballparks have upped their food games quite considerably. a hotdog is fine for me, but im sure not complaining about all the options.
August 18, 20177 yr Yeah the food has gotten progresively better ever year since I've lived here. Except for the cargo boxes in the upper deck they have done a pretty good job making the ballpark a microcosm of cleveland for everyone to try.
August 22, 20177 yr by far the big art show of the summer is sturtevant uptown in harlem. its better than her moma retrospective a couple years ago. its up for a few more weeks, so if you come to nyc and have time you could check it out. http://gavinbrown.biz/home/exhibitions
August 22, 20177 yr ^ haha -- yep thats modern art for ya! clik on the gallery site for even more confusion -- actually, in a nutshell elaine sturtevant is best know for copies of famous modern artworks of her era, as well as her own work in a wide variety of formats, if that helps. my friend in brooklyn once gave her a studio tour -- and it really pleases me that these two clevelanders met before she died. shes definately cleveland's most famous modern artist.
August 28, 20177 yr Case Western Reserve continues to embrace and promote Cleveland city more and more as part of its brand - bravo!

September 3, 20177 yr Last night, even on a cold, damp and dank Saturday night, Flats East Bank was just as jammed as usually... This really bodes well for the colder weather months. ... btw the WHD was hoppin' too...
September 3, 20177 yr How is WHD at night these days? There were some issues there in the early 2010s. Have things seemed to settle?

September 4, 20177 yr How is WHD at night these days? There were some issues there in the early 2010s. Have things seemed to settle? I think it's settled down... My buddy is now living on W 9th, have gone there on the weekend nights a bunch of times, doesn't seem to bad. We don't really go down 6th that much though so it could be different there.

October 3, 20177 yr THE GOOD NEWS: During the Browns-Bengals game last Sunday, the CBS-Sports came in from a commercial into a live shot of the West Side Market, which was surprisingly busy on a Sunday. It was visually impressive, of course, a chance to really showcase Cleveland, right, except for ... THE BAD NEWS: Because it was a football game between 2 NFL bottom feeders, few people outside Ohio actually saw it.
October 5, 20177 yr The report of a month or so ago that Fund That Flip was locating their back offices in the Warehouse District got me interested in the company. November 2, 20177 yr in the free amny newsday commuter papers this week — very nice! the tired ministers of culture, rotolos and a few other stray pd dinosaurs might take a good look over these straightforward opening lead in remarks regarding what “might come immediately to mind” “when considering cleveland” instead of shoveling out their usual backhanded remarks about burning rivers and whatnot that no one remembers or cares about anymore: https://www.amny.com/things-to-do/cleveland-food-guide-1.14688535
November 2, 20177 yr Speaking of New York... I'm noticing a lot more East Coast license plates around Lakewood and Cleveland lately, especially from New York. There are reports that back-office departments are being moved from New York headquarters to Cleveland to take advantage of the lower cost of living and the lower pay that goes with it. In another instance, GCA Services Group (a large custodial services contractor) of Cleveland was acquired by ABM Industries of New York City. The combined company is being consolidated in Downtown Cleveland. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

November 2, 20177 yr i dont see any mention of the hq moving to cleveland, that would be great if it happens, but anyway the adm company most certainly rings a bell in ny: 17 ABM employees were killed at the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks. The company also lost its largest corporate account, which accounted for annual revenues of $65 million. A window washer that was working for ABM managed to use his squeegee to open an elevator door saving many people.

Maybe it is; I don't know. But the back office functions are certainly being consolidated here according to a family friend who is an account manager for GCA here in Cleveland. He says a number of his co-workers accepted buyouts because they are being replaced by ABM workers transferring from New York. I guess it's cheaper to buy-out a Clevelander than a New Yorker.
