How many jobs did Eton Corp take out of downtown?  My sense is that this will replace what was lost and then some.

I assume you mean the reference to PNC in the downtown office thread? Eaton moved 700 jobs out of downtown to Highland Hills.

I did not know it was that many people.

The Travel+Leisure article highlights my meadery, and was one of the nicest write-up's we've received.  They really captured what we're trying to achieve, and that's pretty rare.

That's your place? Wow! Awesome!

I guess this could go here... with this report it looks like there will absolutely be continued demand for new construction downtown.  There's only so many older building that can be converted to housing!

Report shows demand for 6,800 more homes in downtown Cleveland by 2030

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Developers could build - and expect to fill - 6,800 more residences in downtown Cleveland by 2030 without oversaturating the market, a new study asserts.

Research by Urban Partners, a Philadelphia-based consulting firm, lays to rest concerns about a potential overabundance of housing in and near the central business district. There's ample demand, the consultants say. But Cleveland must find ways to add more for-sale homes to the rental-heavy market and to turn more downtown workers into residents.

The study, funded by civic and nonprofit groups and released Wednesday, evaluates the opportunities for housing in downtown Cleveland and portions of six nearby neighborhoods. By plumbing census data, evaluating growth trends and comparing Cleveland to more-developed cities, Urban Partners concluded that downtown could approach - or possibly surpass - 30,000 residents by 2030, up from an estimated 17,500 renters, owners and students today.

Yep, it could go here. Or it could go in the downtown residences thread (which it did) and in the Housing market and trends thread (which it did). ;)

I don't know who he is, but I'm always happy when someone discovers Cleveland has a beach:)  People are always blown away by that.

^Someday Euclid Beach and Wildwood will get some credit (yes world, Cleveland has more than one beach). But i like when folks discover Cleveland gems as well.

People seem to underestimate the vastness of the Great Lakes.

This!  I remember my mom telling a story of her helping a customer and in their casual conversation, the customer----from South Carolina----was surprised that she couldn't see across Lake Erie.  Like, she thought that the lake was small enough for her to see Canada. lol

I get that all the time from first time visitors.  They are shocked to see an "ocean"!

Yep! All the time! I've had intelligent people ask about whether it was salt or fresh water they were seeing. The question about tides is a little more intricate. Answer: yes, there are in fact tides but they're so inconsequential that they're not measured.

Also worth mentioning is that when I worked in Key Tower on floor 39, my supervisor would come to the window and stare out over the water. She loved doing so every chance she got. On her first day of work we all remembered she asked what body of water that was. She grew up in Medina County.

Ah, 39th floor, another TH veteran. Where did you work there?

Project attorney! Back then we were located adjacent to the law library (when such things were still relevant lol).

I still miss those views. Did you enjoy working there? They have to be one of the largest firms in CLE by now.

I started out on 39, my department used to be on the other side of the floor before they began all their various moves to different floors. I think they've shrunk in size quite a bit since then actually.

PRESS RELEASE

New Cleveland Photo Book Teaches the Alphabet through Images of the City

CLEVELAND, Feb. 11 – Elephia Press is pleased to announce the upcoming release of The OfficialCleveland ABC Book by Mark Zannoni, on Tuesday, Feb. 19th. The hardcover book depicts the wonders of Cleveland while teaching younger children the alphabet and about the city as well. The title presents a fun way to learn the alphabet while seeking to instill local pride. The book helps to create associations in young minds between the letters of the alphabet and familiar places, things, and role models.

The words represented by each letter are common nouns, so children throughout the English-speaking world will learn regular words while using the imagery of Cleveland for visual references.

Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to one word and a question under each word is presented to stimulate discussion with the child. Finally, being a photo book with colorful text pages, the title represents the confluence of visual stimulation and beauty, positive and inspiring documentation of Cleveland, and an important educational resource for young developing minds.

The author states that “while the book is educational, it also promotes the City of Cleveland. For example,'P' does not stand for 'park' or 'playground' as those are in found every city. Instead, 'P' stands for 'Port' to teach that Cleveland is an international port city and the port contributes significantly to the city’s economy.”

The Author / Photographer

Mark Zannoni is a Cleveland photographer, focusing on editorial and documentary work worldwide, including a recent study on post-war Vietnam. In addition to capturing imagery from Abu Dhabi to Zimbabwe, he has been documenting the streets and beauty of Cleveland for decades. As a life-long Cleveland booster, he hopes the book will instill interest in and love of Cleveland by others while presenting the city in images for readers worldwide.

Relevance

Once America’s 5th largest city, Cleveland suffered setbacks, particularly after the interstate highway system decimated urban neighborhoods and manufacturing jobs left for cheaper labor overseas. But, with a now more diversified economy, the city is booming again with new Downtown construction, a Downtown residential population at its highest in the city’s history, and a stronger economy. In May 2018, employment in the seven-county Cleveland market surpassed same-month 2007 employment numbers meaning the Great Recession is finally behind the city. With new strength and energy in the city and a renewed perception of Cleveland on the national front, The Official Cleveland ABC Book will contribute to the growth and rejuvenation of the city.

Availability

The title will be released on Feb. 19th.  Pre-release sales are available from Barnes and Noble or through the publisher’s book site www.clevelandABCbook.com. Upon release, the list of local stores carrying the title will be published on the title’s website and updated as needed.
