I'm watching the NBA playoffs on ESPN, and just saw an ad for Goodyear that I thought was an ad for Cleveland at first. It features nice skyline shots, one of the cursiveish Cleveland signs that are around town, and at the end they had a cartoon version of the skyline and the Q (refusing to call it a fu***** field house) with the Goodyear logo. Has anyone seen it? Pretty cool and great national visibility for Cleveland!

*watching in Los Angeles, so this isn't just a regional ad

Edited by edale

Just Saw it in it in a this bar now in Cincinnati, and was surprised it wasn’t just an NEO thing.

The Goodyear Wingfoots ?

Can confirm it’s airing in California. Beautiful ad!!!

“Finding a well-preserved home for sale that was built before the Revolutionary War is a rarity. Finding one in the middle of Ohio — a state founded in 1870, almost 100 years after after the American Revolution began in 1775 — seems downright impossible.”

I’m shocked that such a well regarded publication as the New York Post would get a basic fact wrong in the first paragraph. /sarcasm

FYI NY Post, Ohio was founded in 1803.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

I didn't know this....

Those upper floors in the library are awesome. Some extremely old copies of the Q’ran too if I remember correctly.

They will only "get over" this when Cleveland/Cuyahoga County's marketing and develop arm AKA "This is Cleveland" starts to be on top of and infront of articles  like this.

Almost all articles like this are the result of efforts by Destination Cleveland. But they can’t control how the authors write their stories.

That is the problem.  "This is Cleveland" or "Destination Cleveland" doesn't have a team in place to deal with this.  What is their PR team doing?  What is the partnership team doing?  What is the "markets" team doing?  This is a multi point, multi directional partnership.  We should be shaping the narrative.

^ you know all those movies where the ugly girl that nobody likes turns out she’s really gorgeous underneath the messy pony tail and Salvation Army-baggy clothes?

Thats our never ending storyline lol.

What do you mean? Look at all the positive press Cleveland has gotten over the past few years. That's what Destination Cleveland's team is doing. Sure, it's annoying that the stories all start with mistake on the lake or burning river references, but then the stories pivot to being positive!

Those are the internal divisions/department that an agency like Cleveland should have.  As someone that is in the industry I know what areas are needed to make a marketing/PR company like this run.  If I was running this company, I would fire everyone.  EV-REE-1!  It would take to much to go deep and explain in detail what I mean.  But I believe that the folks in charge aren't doing a good job protecting and promoting the "Cleveland" brand.

I think that's completely incorrect.

And we don't have to agree.  However, I have a personal and professional, view considering I work with agencies like this across the globe.

Can you give me more of a sense of what you think they are doing wrong/what they should be doing better/what outcomes you would like to see that aren’t happening?

I don't have any background in PR, but, in my lay opinion, it seems like there have been some misfires. Like the "Downtown Cleveland You Are Here" video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__5xpeffexs

Great song, but the video was filled with predominantly young'ish people whereas tourist leaders absolutely needed to cast a wider net for families, seniors, etc.

And a downtown focused tourism video might work in NYC or Chicago, but in Cleveland I imagine you should include some of the more vibrant neighborhoods (and even certain suburbs i.e. Chagrin Falls and Hudson for the charm, Beachwood/Crocker for shopping). Downtown alone just doesn't have enough unique attractions to warrant trips for the average tourist, and the things people want to do - walk in metroparks, see museums, eat ethnic foods, drink in microbreweries, attend small theaters, and SHOP - are not concentrated there.

Finally, from a stylistic perspective, why is the weather rainy and gloomy the first 30 seconds? Not exactly leading with your best foot forward.

Edited by TBideon

Well that video was put together not by Destination Cleveland, but rather by Downtown Cleveland Alliance, so their goals are different and helps explain why their focus is on certain items (Downtown exclusively, the millennial market for apartments, etc)

Oh.. I completely misread that. Call me phonetically challenged today.

I love these archival-type photo sets. They might not look like much to us now other than advertising bait, but in 50 years these will show how much the city, styles and people has (or hasn't) changed! Love it.

I for one, find the continuing transformation of Edgewater to be quite stunning. These pics are proof that Cleveland is very much rediscovering itself a coastal city. It wasn't so long ago when locals were un-ironically voting for it as "worst beach in America."

EP/styles/people will definitely change in that time frame. EP has transformed in just the past several years. Take a look at 30+...

Small thing I noticed, not sure how recent, but the photo has been changed to a much favorable one, in my opinion, when searching "Cleveland" in google.

Cleveland - Why are they not in the Rock Hall??

Lots of bands that deserve to be in the Rock Hall aren't there if they don’t fit the format they believe. At this point it’s not confined just to “rock’n’roll” so why bother, expand it to generally include all facets of rock with an emphasis on the early and classic eras (although it seems they’re shifting towards this).

Devo is in the Rock Hall.  Does anything else need to be said?

No. Because that's the only band that belongs in the Rock Hall. ?

Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Nine Inch Nails (CLE), Smashing Pumpkins, Motorhead, Duran Duran, Soundgraden anyone? ?

if the zombies can get in the rrhof this year basically based on shes not there and time of the season, there is hope for the outsiders and the dazz band.

Is there a separate Rock Hall inductees thread?

^I agree.
