Gitmo prisoners rewarded with kittens?

By Emily Heil

What’s fluffy, has four paws and just might be the latest tool in the war against terror? A kitten!

We’ve heard of prisoners who cooperate with authorities being rewarded with cigarettes, better food, perhaps an upgrade in digs. But in Guantanamo Bay, we’re told that the military brass have added pet cats to the list of perks accorded particularly helpful detainees.

At least that’s what one detainee’s attorney thinks. Carlos Warner, a lawyer representing Muhammed Rahim, an Afghan who was a translator for Osama bin Laden, gave the Loop a brief letter from his client. That note, which was just declassified, consisted of one line: “Dear Mr. Warner — Majid Khan has a cat.”

Khan, an alleged member of Al Qaeda who has agreed to testify against one of the chief planners of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is considered a “high-value”detainee and was held by the CIA in a secret prison for several years before his transfer to Guantanamo.

[the last paragraphs are bizarre]

Prisoners being allowed to interact with or keep pet animals as a reward isn't new, even in the context of the modern corporate prison warehouse system we have going on today.

Gag me with a spoon you're sooo condescending.

What's the Cleveland connection to the story?

I was ready to delete that story that except I was listening to 92.3 The Fan while reading this. They read that story right at that moment. That's when I heard the Cleveland connection.

So you should have posted the reason why this should be posted here in this thread.....

“Dear Mr. Warner!” he wrote in a separate freshly declassified letter. “Lebron James is very bad man. He should apologise to the city of Cleveland.”

Warner says the Rahim’s sentiment about the NBA star who left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat reflects his client’s tribal values, in which loyalty is paramount and “betrayals are not tolerated or forgiven, although an honest apology from an offending peer is valued.”

Hear that, LeBron?

At the opening of Nano Brew tonight we met two guys from Dusseldorf and one from Taiwan.  All three were staying at the new Hostel in Ohio City and all three were extending their stay in Cleveland because of the great time they were having here.  We had a great time hanging out with them and hearing about their travels.  Kudos to the Hostel for helping to make Ohio City an international tourist destination !

Very cool -- thanks for the update!

I just went on a hostel pub crawl in Dublin, Ireland two weeks ago.  It looks like there can be a very cool Ohio City/Cleveland version as well.

Great story. Proof we need more hostels! I'll bet one in Asiatown would do well. And you have to know that one would do very well in the UC/Little Italy area.

I loved that post. Thanks.

Me too. Thanks

i know can you believe that? city-data is trash, but its good to see some people counter-acting the negative nonsense. and they did it so well, too.

No problem y'all -- in honor of the visiting Texan...

Available in print and e-book!  I have not read it yet.  The introduction is stylish prose:

http://rustbeltchic.com/purchase/

America is in the grips of a budding “roots movement.” Desires for the splashy are giving way to a longing for the past. Many are turning back toward the Rust Belt and geographies like it to find what’s they’ve been missing. Yes, the Rust Belt is a severe land, a disinvested land, a land of conflict. But the Rust Belt is also a land that lacks illusions. And that is becoming attractive to folks, be they a returning expat from Florida or a young creative type tired of the bells and whistles of Global City, USA. This attraction is captured by the term “Rust Belt Chic”.

***

My impression of a "severe land" is Fresno, Texas, or Washington, DC.  Spend time outside and the sun will burn you down and the air will fill your lungs with dust or ozone.  There is something comforting about a place where the lawn stays squishy until May.

Very well done!  Two thumbs up!

I went home to Cle and brought some guests with me from Atlanta and DC.  The raved on how cool the city was and thoroughly enjoyed it. From my viewpoint Cleveland looks good. Let the city carry the momentum forward!

Even though gambling isn't everybody's cup of tea (and I, myself do it infrequently), I love what the casino has done/is doing for downtown.  Even though the crazy newbie crowds have died down, the casino is always buzzing.  It has brought a dead gigantic Higbee's building back to life. It is a comfortable, well decorated, secure and welcoming place right at the center of town -- no casino I'm aware of is so well located; even directly accessible to rail rapid transit indoors... Clearly, downtown has been on a roll for a number of years.  But Phase I of the Horseshoe is a major, binding people magnet that, unlike no other in Cleveland history, is open 24/7 and, imho, has seriously upped the dynamic of downtown; a major element (among several, ... but the most significant) that has helped make going downtown cool for a larger swath of the populace.

Showed this to some friends last night. We all agree it's very well done. Thanks MTS.

p.s. Anyone remember how to locate that Asian-produced CLE/NEO promo video? That was also pretty inspiring.

Its well done.  That Andrew Samtoy is a guy to keep your eye on (charming guy with the bowtie)....

He's one of those guys that seems to just magically make things happen and has many fans.  Im working on getting him to consider running for mayor... eventually.

The ones I know of for sure...Kyrie Irving, Joe Haden, Phil Taylor, Montario Hardesty, Grady (not for long).

Varajao definitely did 2-3 years ago (still might).  JJ Hickson, Antawn Jamison, and Brian Robiskie did when they were playing in Cleveland.  Also, when I looked into living in 668 they mentioned a few Indians lived there.

Ha, Samtoy and I did CBB together last year. He's really an energized guy. He's the guy, btw, that brainchild-ed the Cash Mob concept.

Samtoy is a great dude, and yeah, he might make a great mayor too.

a guy in buffalo would disagree, but i never heard of'm until cle was mentioned:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cash_mob

A guy in buffalo came up with the concept, but Samtoy was the first to use/utilize/perfect it.

well brainchild implies that he created it and he didnt. but like i say i never heard of it until it was used in conjunction with cleveland cash mobs, so aside from the usefulness of the concept itself that kind of publicity is whats important.

I don't care who invented it, I'm just glad someone's doing it here.

I didnt see brainchild used...  He is indeed the originator of the event.

The Trust did an article on them where it mentions this (the buffalo guy and Samtoy), but I cant find right now.

aj used it above. yes there were a lot of articles and bloggy writing about cash mobs earlier in the year, all in a positive light and cleveland got a lot of credit, so that was good to see.

Bah...semantics!

Im putting this here.  Quite an honor especially because it is my new hood, and I was just marveling at the drive down here yesterday.

American Planning Association, 10 great streets for 2012:

Shaker Boulevard Named "Top Ten Great Street" for 2012

The American Planning Association has designated Shaker Boulevard as one of its ten Great Streets for 2012 under the organization's Great Places in America program. Shaker Boulevard's "enduring design, multi-modal transportation options, engaged citizens who have fought to preserve the street's integrity, and surrounding community uses" were noted as distinguishing reasons for the designation. The 6.75-mile stretch of road, which begins in Cleveland, traverses Shaker Heights, and ends at I-271 in Beachwood, has carried millions of travelers over its 100-year history. This award is particularly fitting in 2012, which is the City of Shaker Heights' centennial year. The boulevard reflects the best of the city's unique characteristics - light rail transit, lush, tree-lined streets, and grand homes built during the apex of American architecture.

Well, technically it goes east until Chagrin River Rd., but who's counting? It's a nice honor, and it definitely is one of my favorite streets in NEO, especially in the spring when the trees are blooming along the rapid tracks.

I see Wall St., in my home town of Kingston is on there as well. One of the few high points in the original capital of NY.

Im putting this here.  Quite an honor especially because it is my new hood, and I was just marveling at the drive down here yesterday.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Bob & Linda Yanega – New residents enjoy the neighborhood

Posted by: lmills    Posted on: 13 November 2012 at 9:00 am

Just two months after moving to Larchmere, new residents Bob & Linda Yanega already feel like they’ve found a home.

“We knew we’d like Larchmere,” said Bob. “We just didn’t realize we’d fall in love with it.”

Bob and Linda arrived here under unusual circumstances.

“We had 28 days to move 27 years of marriage from our Solon home of 20 years,” says Bob.
