May 4, 201510 yr Just a little blurb, but it made me smile...so here you go: Readers find a taste of Cleveland in Las Vegas By HEIDI KNAPP RINELLA LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Gotta love those regional brands. After noticing an item in which the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council named the hot dog served at the Cleveland Indians’ Progressive Field as the best ball-park dog in the country, Roger J. Henning launched a search for Sugardale hot dogs and their traditional accompaniment, Bertman Ball Park Mustard. Unfortunately, the dog remains elusive, but readers did email with local sources for the mustard. http://www.reviewjournal.com/life/fooddining/readers-find-taste-cleveland-las-vegas
May 13, 201510 yr A little University Circle love from the NY Times: In Cleveland, Young and Old Keep Tempo of Life By JOHN HANC MAY 13, 2015 Here at Judson, young and old play nicely together, part of an intergenerational program that has led to harmonious relationships beyond the concerts. While many residences for older people are regularly serenaded by the local high school band or other area musicians, Judson Manor’s initiative has taken such interaction several steps further. The artist-in-residence program provides furnished one-bedroom apartments to three graduate students from the Cleveland Institute of Music at no charge, for the duration of their studies. In exchange, the students perform regular concerts at Judson Manor, occasionally (as was the case at this recent Friday recital) with musically inclined residents. The program began five years ago, when the Cleveland Institute, just a few blocks away, was experiencing a housing shortage for its students. A board member knew that rooms were available at Judson and approached the manor about the possibility of housing some of the institute’s graduate students, who make up about half of the student body (which currently numbers 438). http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/14/business/retirementspecial/in-cleveland-young-and-old-keep-tempo-of-life.html?_r=0
May 14, 201510 yr I went to Indiana U in Bloomington in the late 80s for one year and then left there to finish up at Miami OH. I know I saw him at IU, and I think at MU as well. I was at IU in the early 90s, and he was there frequently. As I recall, Jed was from Terre Haute, and hit many universities in the region. There were several stories about him and the older guy he replaced (can't remember his name) in the student newspaper.

June 16, 20159 yr Go where the NBA finals go: Cleveland and Oakland looking better as investment destination Examining the correlation between success in professional basketball and the economic performance and cultural dominance of particular cities Jun 9, 2015 @ 12:01 am By David F. Sand Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Boston. All world class cities, all frequently represented in the National Basketball Association Finals. Indeed these four cities have been in the NBA Finals 34 times out of the 72 possible appearances since 1980. Fans of the San Antonio Spurs would argue correctly that they belong on the list, but do the Spurs have fans? (New York Knicks fans, please be quiet.) Is there a correlation between success in professional basketball and the economic performance and cultural dominance of particular cities? And, if there is, what does it say about America in the 21st Century when this year's finals feature the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers? Golden State plays in Oakland, Calif., and Cleveland plays in, you guessed it, Cleveland. The two teams each feature superstars for the ages (Stephen Curry for the Warriors and LeBron James for the Cavs) and unusually cerebral rookie coaches, but perhaps Oakland and Cleveland, places with unique histories, economies and personalities, represent something for the future different from the arcs of the established cities of past NBA Finals. Something different not just for sports championships, but also for the direction of America's future. Honey Hut is the best in OH. I've had both, and IMO there is no "contest" between the two. HH it is, hands down, or should I say sticky fingers!!!
June 21, 20159 yr ^ That's a ridiculous statement, but regardless, I think we can all agree it's good to see Mitchell's make a list like that as opposed to Graeter's or Jeni's.
June 22, 20159 yr Is that the place in Ohio City in the old Moda? Because if it is, that ain't a good choice. I'm with BCCLE1 in that I prefer Honey Hut (though it's not my favorite in Ohio either). June 22, 20159 yr Then God help the Business Insider. I haven't had ice cream in years, so I can't comment. But I've found Business Insider has gone pretty far downhill as a reliable source.
June 22, 20159 yr I once felt the way some of these posters did regarding Mitchells. Didn't feel it was anything special...but in the past year or so (since they moved to Ohio City), I feel like a switch went off in terms of innovation. They are doing things with ice cream that not many others can do or have tried, and they are absolutely nailing them as well. They are creative, innovative, sustainable and different. I have come around on them and have no issue with the rankings. I know Graeters nation and Team Jenis will be bent, but hey, if you aren't evolving, someone is passing you up.

June 22, 20159 yr Well the half dozen times I actually have ice cream in the year, East Coast Originals would definitely be in there. But I would choose Mitchell's/Pierre's because of their significnt investment in the city.
June 22, 20159 yr Well the half dozen times I actually have ice cream in the year, East Coast Originals would definitely be in there. But I would choose Mitchell's/Pierre's because of their significnt investment in the city. Good point. Pierre's has been in Midtown long before the ECP/Health Line/BRT, so folks cant say BRT influenced it... Also, I particularly like the fact that Mitchell's newest, and most visible franchises have been in rail-friendly TOD areas of Cleveland: Uptown and Ohio City/Market Sq. And whatever anyone thinks of the ice cream itself, I doubt even the harshest critic will give them anything less than 5-stars for their home-plant, recreation of MODA in Ohio City, which is as much an ice cream museum as it is a restaurant... ... now for the product... I'm not the greatest connoisseur of ice cream as I was in my earlier years (eschewing the poundage, mainly), but I have to say that Mitchell's was very solid imho, and my girlfriend really liked the experimental flavors they had, to which I give them props... I will say that Sweet Moses in Gordon Sq gives them a serious run for their money and, perhaps, in my limited sampling (from Mitchell's mainly in U. Circle), I might give SM a slight edge... but only slight. Mitchell's chocolate, chocolate chip was very, very good. ... one minor Mitchell's irritant is their refusal to offer coffee. As a serious drinker of black coffee, the marriage of coffee and ice cream is a natural, and Mitchell's is rare among ice creameries that I know of that doesn't offer coffee (Sweet Moses sure does). I've mentioned it to their managers and dropped this suggestion in their boxes for the last couple years, but still Mitchell's hasn't budged. It's forced me to BYOC, which is a pain... Still, I'm a big Mitchell's fan and absolutely support them, particularly because of their commitment to Cleveland -- similar to my patronage of Constantino's, Dave's and other businesses that have invested the big bucks in our city -- btw I've always Heinen's as a Shaker guy ... love 'em even more now that they've gambled bigtime (and seem to be winning) with their new downtown location.
June 22, 20159 yr ^... btw, Mitchell's was the perfect establishment in Market Square to attract more families and balance against the bar/beer heavy orientation of the District -- which is, of course, it's charm and fame... It's really upped the ante in making Ohio City perhaps THE go-to neighborhood in Cleveland -- at times, even eclipsing downtown.
June 22, 20159 yr I developed a slight intolerance to lactose in my early twenties and, instead of taking medication, just completely cut it out of my diet...... which did wonders for my health (no more pizza, cheesecake, mozzarella sticks, etc). Since it has been out of my diet for well over a decade, my intolerance is now fairly severe and I can't eat ice cream at all..... even frozen yogurt will make my stomach sour. However, I do LOVE Mitchell's because it's vegan options blow anything else I've tried out of the water. I've actually never tried Mitchell's "ice cream"

Though I can not resist the gelato at the Sweet Spot in Lakewood. All of it's locally sourced or organic and they do use Great Lakes beer too.... Beeramisu. Damn the consequences!

July 2, 20159 yr Nights like tonight really make me love this town (not that I don't always love it). Seeing tens of thousands of people come downtown to watch one of the world's greatest orchestras celebrate our country. It gave me the feels to see the Mall activated like that, as it should be. I love Public Square, but I wouldn't mind the Mall becoming the location for this concert every year.
July 2, 20159 yr It was a perfect night for the concert. EVERYONE that I have talked to has agreed the mall is perfect for the concert and that Public Square should be for other types of events. The view was perfect and you can fit a lot more people comfortably on the mall. I'm sure there is going to be a ton of positive feedback from this temporary location.
