It's kind of funny how certain videos strike a chord unexpectedly. They really were lightening in a bottle, another Chocolate Rain, Numa Numa Kid, Charlie Bit Me, Leroy Jenkins, that couldn't be replicated if you tried.

Totally harmless fun that people took far too seriously.

Did any of the aforementioned harmless videos contribute to a negative stigma regarding a metropolitan area hanging on by the skin of its teeth at the time?

Though less a phenomenon, the "It's So Cold in the D" song is somewhat analogous, and it didn't seem to have any impact on Detroit's investments and current momentum. People need to be less sensitive and reactive with comedy videos, especially satirical/ironic ones.

I do, when they're funny.

I'm gonna be that guy...

It's "lightning in a bottle".  Lightening has a completely different meaning.

it would have been one thing if those videos were funny, but they were terrible. just completely unfunny. i cant believe that many people sat through them.

Don't underestimate people's desire to bash Cleveland.

holy toledo lol!

that reminds me — i wore a classic mudhens baseball cap off and on for years all around town and no one said a thing. that is until a day before i finally lost it when i was sitting on the train and a young guy standing right in front of me from toledo recognized it — so we chatted nw-ohioy stuff a bit. so thats the only time toledo ever came up in nyc for me lol.

Saw this walking home from the store today. It was taped to an empty storefront window in the Pilsen neighborhood, Chicago on Cermak Ave near Wolcott.

Speaking of the FRONT Triennial, I was surprised to see that as part of the City Canvas project they are planning on painting the south wall of the Standard Building with a red gingham mural.

If it is they are packing someone into the rescue squad right now.

I just finished a cruise from Montreal to Detroit that featured a port call in Cleveland. There were about 160 passengers onboard (out of a possible 200); about 60% were from all over the uS, 30% from all over Canada, and 10 percent from Europe and Asia. Most of them had never been to Cleveland before but had heard stories.  I swear when the ship left port, Cleveland had 160 new fans.  Everybody seemed to love the place with a lot of "I want to come back for more" comments.

The AM tour was three trollies touring downtown and then driving to University Circle and Lakeview Cemetery, where they stopped at the Wade Chapel (I would have preferred the Garfield Mem.). On to the West Side Market and the Flats.  In the afternoon about half went to the Rock Hall and half went to the Art Museum. It was a beautiful day and I have to say the city looked great.

I think the Victory Line is making about 16 port calls in Cleveland this year and feel confident that the city makes 150-200 new friends every time.  They may not have time to spend a lot of money; but they leave with a totally new and positive opinion of the city and they will tell their friends.

^^I just drove by their on the Main Ave bridge and it is in port right now.

Yes, it got to Detroit yesterday and was planning a quick turnaround leaving the same day - that's Victory II - Victory I is on a Toronto-Chicago cycle and calls in Cleveland as well.

I scored this old book The Rover Boys on the Great Lakes from a garage sale in Vermilion. Some really interesting depictions of a thriving city of Cleveland circa 1901. The Rover Boys were the precursor to the better known Hardy Boys. The author, Edward Stratemeyer, was the maybe the most prolific writer ever. He sold more than 500 million books.

Here's the audio:

edit - so this reading is kind of terrible. I recommend just reading the book:

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie !!!

Bernie Moreno sells Mercedes, charter flights, a voting app and more: My Cleveland

By Grant Segall, The Plain Dealer | Posted September 20, 2018 at 09:30 AM | Updated September 24, 2018 at 05:39 PM

The people who love Cleveland the most are the ones who moved here. Cleveland feels like a traditional small town, but it has everything a big city does. Three sports teams, great orchestra, better theater than Boston.

We need to think bigger and take more risks. We should expect more, like in public transportation. We should expect transparency in government. But we should always be cheerleaders for Cleveland.

Nice article. Hard to dislike a guy that stumps for Cleveland that hard. Hopefully some of the tech companies he's investing in takes off.

A car dealer even mentioning we need more investment in public transportation. Pretty cool.

The more you hear from him, the less impressive he becomes though.
