I normally view these DCA videos as something between advertisement and fluff pieces.  However, this video is particularly interesting given the anticipated developments coming over the next decade.

At the end of the video do I view downtown Cleveland with a penciled in nuCLEus, City Club Apartments, RealLife Tower and the big tamale.. the Sherwin-Williams HQ?  Maybe or maybe not.. another well done video by DCA nonetheless.

It wasn't filmed here, but supposedly Season 2 Episode 1 of Netflix "Haunted" series is based on experiences of a group of 20 somethings living in a rented house on Clifton in Cleveland.    Anyone know these kids or where they lived?  There is some debate as to whether the series is real or not....

Is this the house on the south side of Clifton, at about West 104th, that always has the incredible Halloween and Christmas decorations?

Not sure...but as an aside, that guy has outdone himself this year!   I think it's one of the better ones I remember him doing.   He completely refinished the front of his house with faux brick and set up a haunted schoolyard filled with skeleton nuns and children!

I stumbled across this a year ago when East 79th street was closed for a repair....

It never supplanted rock and roll in this area like it did other places.    WMMS had a lot to do with it.  Always sort of a niche thing.

My dad traveled all the time for his job so when he'd fly back into Cleveland my mom would meet him at the Final Approach disco on top of the Sheraton airport hotel.  That meant a babysitter for me which was heaven or hell.  I either had the freckle faced next door neighbor who we all despised or the smoking hot Hawaiian 6th grader who I adored.  I'd be asleep by the time my folks arrived home.

I stayed at the same hotel a few years ago and neither of the bartenders had any idea what i was talking about when I mentioned the disco.  Sad.

It's probably relevant that one of the main discos in the area would be associated with an airport hotel, where a lot of the patrons would be from out of town.

I forgot about those.

Plus all the certain ethnic (although, self-deprecating) jokes they had.

The one skit I remember I know for sure would not air now centered around a pediatricians office with a bunch of moms feeding their babies... one had chocolate milk. Sort of a play on some of the old Little Rascals bits.

"Big Chuck" Schlodowski could even get away with telling them as Polish jokes out in public, back then.   "Certain Ethnic" was as much a parody of the complainers as anything else.   Jeff and Flash used it a lot as well.

I loved Big Chuck, Hoolihan and Lil John

Cleveland is one of TMobiles initial 600mghz roll out cities and their new national commercial features Progressive Field and some skyline shots. It aired during the World Series tonight. Pretty cool.

I love this guy's videos?. (I tried to persuade him to do a taco tour of Painesville since he's from LA and presumably has a more discriminating palate for them than the average  Ohioan, but so far no luck)

Ok, me seeing a helicopter doing tight circles 100’ above the Detroit Superior Bridge now is making more sense. I heard on the radio (via road closures) that they are filming a movie on the west side.

Its all coming together! ?

^ Ah. We saw a helicopter Saturday morning, nose pointing down doing tight circles around Industrial Valley way. We assumed it was some kind of aerial inspection, maybe of power lines, or one of the factories, but that makes more sense!

My hovercraft is full of eels

They'll say cgi for pink skys in the over lake shot ? It was real though, they lucked out big time that morning.

Wow, that's so much more reasonable........Boston is crazy expensive.

Which is why Cleveland civic leaders need to be sending reminders to CEOs and others who make decisions where employers are located, that Cleveland's costs of living and labor costs are so much less, yet the amenities here are still Sixth City-caliber.

Like the old book title says -- "Cleveland, where the East Coast meets the Midwest." Except that its "East Coast-caliber amenities at Midwest prices."

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Ken, you're exactly right.....but even as expensive as it it, every time I visit an east coast city I come back with so much envy.  SOOOO much to do, so many people on the sidewalks, so much activity.  But I'll take what I pay for my apartment over what they pay in Boston every day!!!

I envy the activity level, but I don't envy the variety of things to do. I do envy the quantity but that's to be expected in a larger city. Yes, New York may have 10 great Ethiopian or Georgian or Mandarin restaurants but Cleveland has at least one or two of each. Philadelphia may have some great museums and theaters, but I'll put ours up against theirs anytime. Boston may have five outstanding seafood restaurants atop an ocean cliff with great city views, but I know of at least one here. I think that also applies to other things like river and lake entertainment, beachfront amenities, neighborhood festivals, wintertime activities and so on.

This is exactly my wife and I are moving back. Cleveland has the amenities you don’t typically see in a city of its size, more than enough to keep us busy.  Cost of living, however, let us take jobs with a better work life balance and still have money to travel.

I've said it before, the city, specifically, needs a road show.

The Michelangelo show at the Cleveland Museum of Art gets a glowing review from the WSJ:

Edit: The WSJ art critic didn't just like the show; he specifically liked the way the CMA did it, giving them credit for a more informative show than the Metropolitan Museum's recent effort.

I just moved back from Austin too. I agree the cities have almost nothing in common. I do find myself missing the “buzz” in Austin a bit sometimes. The city is a sprawling mess but there is stuff going on everywhere on account of a Cleveland-sized population living in an Akron-sized infrastructure.

Edited by bumsquare

Put Austin in Dallas-sized infrastructure. That's Cleveland today.

Oh for sure! There is a bit more of a “buzz” in Austin that Cleveland will just never have, but there is also something about the nature of Austin that has just never really sat well with me. I lived in NYC for a decade before my recent move to ATX, and maybe I’m just a hardened and cynical Midwesterner/East Coast liberal elite, but there is just too much pretense in the Texas capital. It just felt so inauthentic which really surprised me since Austin is supposed to be so “weird”. But I guess after spending 10 years riding the subway, nothing seems weird at all anymore. I do miss queso with every meal and the ability to go outside in February though.

I feel like you did. I also feel like I did when I lived there! I’m sure it was an incredible place before it started to blow up in the late 90’s as my parents have great memories of living there when my dad was stationed in the city while in the Air Force in the 70’s. It just doesn’t seem very unique or interesting anymore. But again, I just moved back and spent a ton of time living in New York so I probably just never gave it a fair shake ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

When my friend got to Austin (2010ish) he set out to find a bar, restaurant  or someplace that was "authentic."  He couldn't.

I don’t know if it’s fair to say it’s “inauthentic”, it’s just new. Cleveland def has it all over Austin for cultural amenities, architecture, cost of living, and traffic. But I would take some of that downtown street life, and good lord do I miss those tacos. I wish there was one place in Cleveland that had decent breakfast tacos (don’t @ me with La Plazas, it’s not the same).

@bumsquare we totally agree. I guess inauthentic wasn’t totally the correct term, but it did just feel like it didn’t have any grounding. It sort of felt like when a “Bachelor” is on Dancing With The Stars. That’s the best analogy I can come up with at the moment. But you are correct. God I miss breakfast tacos. But I also miss sausage egg and cheese on a roll from any corner NYC bodega. Plus we all know that if you want the best tacos in Austin you simply hop in the car and drive an hour south to San Antonio ?. Enough about Austin. This just goes to say that while Cleveland will never have the reputation that Austin has, I feel like it is a much better fit for me personally as I am just not the “Austin” type I guess. I just love being back in The Land and am so glad I chose CIM as an excuse to get back up here.

As someone older I disagree.  Pre 96 Cleveland had a more party vibe.  You could party every night of the week.

Serious question, what is stopping you from going outside, in Cleveland, in February? The weather is not the issue, as a four season city, there are plenty of things to do,  especially if you're a winter weather/sports enthusiast.

The seasons/activities are just inverted in Austin. You can dine al fresco, go hiking, and just generally be outside all winter in Austin. You have to live like a shut-in from June-October but winter is great. Although I will take Cleveland summer over Austin winter.
