Random angle of 200 PS which I’ve missed all of these years. Is there a thread for the building? I’ve got a few pics but wasn’t able to find a previous picture thread for it.

And yeah, I know it’s not the best looking building downtown; but from certain angles, it’s a show-stopper.

Viewed from the side as it is there and from the Fountain of Eternal Life, it's probably my favorite building downtown. Viewed from head on though... I'm at least glad they went with the set backs instead of just a flat roof.

Glad to see our beautiful jersey barriers in Public Square made the cut. 🙄

"Ohio gets featured a lot in political coverage as a traditional bellwether state, and it seems to be a good microcosm for the current plagues of the US: The coronavirus is raging, the opioid crisis has cut deep, racism is rampant, and many industries have disappeared overseas, all of which paints a pretty bleak picture of the state from the outside."

Jesus what an opener. I'm surprised they didn't mention Anthony Sowell, Tamir Rice, and the river catching on fire in the same breath.

That language actually makes me angry though. Because it's in no way indicative of the progress seen in the three C's since 2010.

I love that they left the jersey barriers on the square....

The Public Square Jersey Barriers are a world renowned Cleveland landmark now. Along with our World Class Signage, they ARE Cleveland. Imagine the Nimby backlash if we try to remove them now.

I caught the movie Transporter Refuled (not good - the original Jason Statham movie is much better) on tv the other night and the character played by the actor Ray Stevenson mentions The Cleveland Clinic during a scene in which he is doing a home medical procedure, specifically "This isn't exactly the Cleveland Clinic, but it will have to do."

Turns out Ray Stevenson is the actor who portrayed Cleveland gangster Danny Greene in the 2011 film Kill the Irishman.  Maybe Cleveland was on Ray's mind?  Silly speculation, but it was fun to hear the Clinic get a shout-out in a dumb action movie.

I finally watched the Bruce Willis movie filmed here in Cleveland "Acts of Violence."  Great shots of Cleveland, but one of the worst movies I've ever seen!   Horrible acting and writing!

Nice!

Cleveland Clinic also getting some shoutouts in the new 2020 HBO mini-series, "The Undoing."

In the first two episodes, Nicole Kidman's doctor husband, Hugh Grant, is supposedly at the Cleveland Clinic for a pediatric oncology conference.   It's mentioned several time in the story line.

also, a recent teach-in lead by moca gets press -- re issues and limits of the arts re anti-blackness:

A particular impetus behind the teach-in is the cancelation of Shaun Leonardo’s exhibition on police brutality at MoCa Cleveland. It sparked debates about the difference between censorship and concerns about displaying images of Black death, particularly without consent from the family and community of the deceased.

muzak fax -- muzak was first popularized in cleveland:

2. MUZAK WAS INVENTED BY A U.S. ARMY GENERAL.

During World War I, Major General George Owen Squier used electrical power lines to transmit phonograph music over long distances without interference. He patented this invention in 1922 and founded Wired Radio, Inc. to profit from the technology. The company first devised a subscription service that included three channels of music and news and marketed it to Cleveland residents for $1.50 per month. When Squier and his associates realized their product was a little too close to regular (free) radio, they started pitching it to hotel and restaurant owners, who were more willing to pay for a steady broadcast of background music without interruptions from radio hosts or advertisements.

3. THE NAME IS A PORTMANTEAU OF MUSIC AND KODAK.

In 1934, Squier changed the name of his business from Wired Radio to Muzak, combining the first syllable of music with the last syllable of Kodak, which had already proven to be an extremely catchy, successful name for a company.

The Cuyahoga River cleaning boat The Putzfrau is back!

“Spotted: Putzfrau returns to the scene 50 years after Cuyahoga River cleanup work”

The Putzfrau, a 56-foot fish tug designed by lifelong Greater Cleveland resident Frank Samsel, removed solid waste, oil, and petroleum products from the Cuyahoga River in the 1970s. Former FreshWater Cleveland managing editor Erin O’Brien thought the boat had long been retired from service and was no longer cruising the river.

But yesterday, Monday, Jan. 4, O’Brien spotted the “Cleaning Lady” in the Flats—back in service and going strong.

that is a shame, it was so grand and it sounds like the neighbor was taking good care of it.

i saw a lot of elm trees in uzbekistan. all the trees there are whitewashed at the base, which is a strange sight to see. it helps prevent disease and it used to be a thing in the usa too. its interesting -- i see the us national parks service was reviving the practice too:

Limewash: An Old Practice and a Good One

Cane River Creole National Historical Park

Historically, plantation landscapes were limewashed or “whitewashed.” The reasons behind this centuries old practice are both aesthetic and practical. Limewashed structures brighten up the surroundings and look great because it glows due to innumerable small crystals. But did you know that limewash is a fire retardant, antiseptic, antifungal, odorless and non-allergic paint?

If buildings are not painted, limewash can slow deterioration of wood and brick due to weather and allow rainwater to run down the outside walls without soaking in. It helps buildings "breathe" by allowing trapped moisture to pass out of the building, reducing mildew and rotting of structural timbers. Limewash can eliminate mosquito larvae, reduce odors where animals are kept and when painted on roofs it reduces inside temperatures up to 10 degrees. It also sweetens the soil around a building. Limewash on iron or other metals prevents rust. Painted in tree trunks, limewash prevents disease, sunburn or frost injury.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park plans to re-establish this former historical and cultural landscape practice and limewash mature trees at Oakland and Magnolia Plantations. Evidence indicates that the practice of limewashing the bases of trees' trunks occurred regularly into and throughout the early 20th century at both plantations.

ny gov cuomo gets some razzing for his covid mountain tv prop -- but thank you team cuomo for bypassing local paint companies like benjamin moore, behr and even popular nyc startup clare paints and for instead supporting cleveland ... and wise of them too, i think a gallon of the 'ol val is like half the price of chi chi clare lol!

Here’s how much Cuomo’s COVID ‘mountain’ prop really cost the state

By Bernadette Hogan and Aaron Feis

February 3, 2021

In response to the request, the state released a receipt from Lowe’s — the national home improvement chain based in North Carolina — for 10 2-inch foam insulation boards measuring four-feet by eight-feet, and three cans of green Valspar paint, totaling $415.34.

^That's great! Good move the Div of Water!

That is strange. OK, 2006 was 15 years ago.  But it seems, at least in the past ten years or so, that the number of, and success of, Cleveland jokes has been diminishing in recent years. I have no data on that, just what I've heard--or haven't heard--over the last 40 years.  Anyone think that is accurate? or are there as many CLE jokes as ever?

I think the "Cleveland as the butt of a joke" thing is getting better, but it still has some very deep national connotations that it just can't seem to shake. At least in my age group I still think that hastily made Cleveland tourism video set us back 15 years in terms of "image".

On national broadcasts you still get references to the Cuyahoga catching fire, and it seems outside of the medical field Cleveland still has a reputation as a net exporter of people.

There's also seemingly a lack of civic pride amongst the people that do live here (but that's getting better too). When people move to Cleveland anecdotally it seems a lot of resident's always seem to ask "Why would you move here?" in disbelief that someone would want to live here. When I visit Detroit it's a stark difference... Detroit has its own problems as well, but the people that live there are proud of their city. That pride I think helps their reputation nationally.

On a national level, I still think the lack of annexation of inner ring suburbs has hurt Cleveland's reputation and it can't seem to shake it. We consistently show up on "worst" rankings because most of our affluent population doesn't live in the city limits.

It's all getting better, and reputation is improving, those are just some of my observations on things that are hindering a faster turnaround.

Same with Chicago and Cuyahoga County.

I'm talking about the market of people who read the NYT. They're more likely than your average joe to be living in an expensive metro, with a higher paying job. In a world where many of those jobs are becoming WFH, it's great that Cleveland can be advertised as being such a great bang for your buck.

For sure, I just think there's a lot of factors that go into cost of living. Worst case scenario, but I know someone who makes $5000 a week in NYC but that doesn't really get you far when most of your money is spent on rent. You're right, it's always good to get good publicity, regardless. It does seem like you can get good deals on real estate in Cleveland.

I dgress but that land bank program seems interesting, where you can buy the land for a dollar as long as you have a solid plan for building a new house on it. I'm not sure if that applies to rehabbing. People should get together on Reddit and buy up an entire neighborhood worth of land! r/ClevelandBets!
