July 26, 20213 yr This is something interesting that I found while researching the artist Doris Seidler. I own one of Seidler's collage pieces. In the early '60s, she was commissioned by Business Week magazine to create a woodcutting representing Cleveland. The below is from the website https://highshrink.com/2017/07/16/cleveland-woodcut-by-doris-seidler-ca-1962/ Much more info is available at if you click the link. "In the early 1960s, Business Week magazine commissioned artists to create works to be used as part of its “Business America” series, an advertising campaign showcasing fifteen American cities and their industries, captured in woodcuts. One of the cities chosen was Cleveland; the artist was British-born Doris Seidler. She had this to say about her piece: "I see Cleveland as a vital, active transportation center. I based my composition on this concept of the city. First, the curve of Lake Erie with its lake steamers; then the railroad tracks, with their open, active forms, leading toward the city. And finally, the jet, reaching across the sky. All three connect Cleveland with the world." "
July 29, 20213 yr This isn't new--from 2016--but I just discovered it, so thought I'd share. For the "World Film Locations" series out of Univ of Chicago Press, there is Singapore, Paris, Barcelona, Sydney, etc. and includes ten US cities--and Cleveland is one of them. The others are LA, NY, Chicago, SF, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Washington, and Boston. CLE: https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/distributed/W/bo25031277.html Full list of cities: https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/series/IB-WFL.html "The prototypical rust belt city, Cleveland has long served as an emblem of late twentieth-century urban decay. But recent decades have brought a cultural and economic renaissance—a revival that has been reflected and aided by the growing number of films being shot on location there. This new entry in the World Film Locations series offers the first-ever extended look at Cleveland on screen. Richly illustrated with images from dozens of productions, it reveals Cleveland to be usefully chameleonic, appealing to some filmmakers for its modern downtown’s ability to mimic more prominent (and more expensive) cities, to others for the way its shuttered factories and decaying docks signify contemporary urban distress. With entries on such classics as The Fortune Cookie, The Deer Hunter, A Christmas Story, and Marvel’s The Avengers, as well as lesser-known films, the volume reveals Cleveland to be a far more compelling, and far more varied, on-screen presence than even most film buffs would expect...."

August 7, 20213 yr ^ thats a cool story i wondered if anyone on here had local connections like that. i saw katie nageotte a few times at the millrose games (i go every year). i found a 2018 write-up blurb here on track&field mag where she also dueled with her olympic rival stefanidi that i recall very well: The women’s vault was slated to be one of the day’s marquee showdowns, with Katerína Stefanídi and Sandi Morris— the top two finishers at the last two global championships—featured on the cover of the meet program. But the American withdrew shortly before competition began due to back pain, which theoretically simplified her Greek rival’s path to victory. The Olympic and world champ was matched, however, by American Katie Nageotte at 15-5½ (4.71), coming out ahead on the countback after both missed 3 times at 15-9¼ (4.81). “Always nice to start the season with a win,” Stefanídi posted on Instagram. “Took some big jumps but the timing was a little off. Excited to be disappointed with a 4.71m.” edit — i just remembered that of course i saw tim mack vault at the millrose games as well. that was back in the early oughties when it was still held at msg. but i really have to add, one year i was wandering around the armory during millrose getting a drink of water at a drinking fountain and when i was done and turned around who was waiting to get a drink? pole vaulter alison stokke. now if you know who she is you know that makes me like a golden god lol. September 13, 20213 yr "Cubism in Ohio" was an interesting article that was in th WSJ's print edition Saturday, but I can't find it in the e-edition. September 30, 20213 yr Probably the Marble Room downtown. Europa in Pepper Pike is up there too (especially if you buy the $700 caviar!).
