For some, it means award winning beer. For others, a great dining and drinking experience in OC. For others still, it represents a singular devotion comparable to little kids staring at the seizure-enducing insanity of Japanese children's cartoons... :-D But GLBC is turning 20! Almost old enough to get a drink.

Raise your glass to 20 years for Great Lakes Brewing Co.

Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Ohio City is celebrating its 20th anniversary of brewing beer and serving great food. Unlike so many restaurants that go belly up, GLBC remains one of Cleveland’s greatest success stories.

Great Lakes Brewery means a lot more than just great beer and a pretty place to drink.  In many ways, it pioneered a comeback for Ohio City. Sure some people could point to Heck's and other establishments that have had success for decades, but GLBC has done so many things on so many levels:

-redevelopment of Market Street

-great beer with loyalists all over the midwest

-helped mainstream the green movement in cleveland

-anchored the redevelopment of W.25th and Lorain

-invested in an area of Cleveland that many had left for dead

Happy Birthday GLB!

Now, if could just convince them to make Conway's Irish Ale a year rounder, I'd be the happiest man alive!

I always like the seasonals better than the standard line up.

and i am not celebrating 15 years of emailing and pleading with them in person to have a presence in nyc --  my bad luck -- waaaa! waaa!

I always like the seasonals better than the standard line up.

I agree...The market street wheat is probably one of the best beers they brew...

I was going to bring that up but did not bother since it has been so long since i have had it- I was not sure if they made it anymore...then tonight we went and there it was. It is their best next to a good batch of Christmas Ale (which is different every year)

Personally, I would love to see a tribute to Harvey Pekar...but that's only a local thing...

Growth on tap at Great Lakes Brewing Co.

Ohio City brewer creates buzz with $6 million in capital improvements that will bolster production

Great Lakes Brewing Co. has been fulfilling its expansion plans in the same way fans of its carefully crafted beers and ales slake their thirst — by sipping, not gulping down market share all at once.

As a result, the brewer in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood has been growing slowly and methodically within its 65,000-square-foot brewhouse on Carroll Avenue between West 26th and West 28th streets. The latest installment of its expansion effort involves a $6 million investment that would boost its production capacity to meet heightened demand.

When the addition of brewing and bottling equipment is complete at the end of 2013, Great Lakes will be at a capacity of 150,000 to 175,000 barrels per year, up a minimum of 50% from its current capacity of about 100,000 barrels. It brewed 87,000 barrels last year.

Small business growth at its best.  Though at 140 employees and growing--and at 150,000+ barrels per year when this expansion is done--it may not be able to be "small" for too much longer.

Beer Blotter: Seattle Based. World Focused.

52 Weeks: Great Lakes Brewpub, Cleveland, Ohio

Which part of the bar do you want first? How about the cave-like cellar? Why not the indoor/outdoor retractable roof patio -- or no -- the long bar lounge. Wait, but there is also a restaurant, wrapped around the small test batch brewing system. Get my drift -- there is a lot to this place.

It has been about 6 years since I last truly explored the GLBC's Brewpub. I know that its supposed to be my first visit -- but the brewery has grown a lot since then. I need to give it another go.

Located in Ohio City, its a mere 5 minute trek from downtown Cleveland. Its a "got to go" destination. The brewery is nestled back off the main roads, disconnected from the Brewpub. But, the pub is right down the alley, less than a 3 minute walk.

No more than a block away is Cleveland's epic West Market. After visiting again, I'm fairly sure it blows Seattle's Pike Place Market out of the water, in terms of food offerings. I'm talking 30 places to grab a sausage, a dozen or more pierogi stands (a Cleveland fave) and the infamous Steve's Gyros (bring your cash and something to do for 45 minutes).

This is also not far away from the home that housed Randy, Ralphie and the old man, stars of A Christmas Story. Though the movie took place in Inidiana, it was shot in Cleveland. The storefront next the Brewpub pays homage with its very own leg lamp. My brother was entranced.
