I know, it's a long way off...

...but 2009 will bring me to Cleveland!

I'm 22 and an Ohio State student currently (studying economics...let me know 'bout them jobs!), and after having lived in the suburbs for my first 18 and the city of Columbus for the last 4+, I can safely say I want to live in the city.  The ability to live a car-free lifestyle, to be near large numbers of people, to have interesting options for food and shopping, to be near work, living in the middle of the action...city living is definitely for me.  So help me, if I live in a place where EVERYTHING is a 10-minute drive away, I will flip my lid.

I've always associated myself with the city of Cleveland (as you must when dealing with non-Ohioans who don't know where Stow is, or Akron for that matter), and now I'm looking to start there.  Between my regular Googling for different information, and the steady lurking of this website, I'm pretty much set on beginning my working life in Cleveland, should the employment deities allow it.

Anyway, I guess I don't have any specific questions at the moment, but I wanted to let the forum regulars know that this website, and this portion in particular, does wonders for teaching about what life in Cleveland is like.  I don't graduate until probably the summer of 2009, so I have a ways to go yet, but the finish line is in my sights.

Just wanted to throw down a big thank you for all you Clevelanders who share your insight about the city; the best ambassadors for Cleveland are its content inhabitants!

Well, it seems that you are in a bit of a unique position with all of this time before your move.

Since you've been "lurking", I'm sure you've already read many of the arguments for and against various neighborhoods. My advice to you is take advantage of the time. If you live in Stow (where I'm presuming your family is - correct me if I'm wrong) and you are going to spend any time at home this summer, explore for yourself! Use Stow as a home base to go and check out Tremont, OC, WHD, E4th, Detroit Shoreway, Asian Village, Shaker Square, Cleveland Heights et al for yourself. Go at different times during the week and weekends to see how the atmosphere changes in each 'hood.

So many people seem to write with a very contracted time frame, so they really need to rely on the guidance of this forum, which I agree, does a fine job fitting people to neighborhoods. But with a full year of advanced notice, you're in a great position.

I moved from Fairlawn to Cedar-Lee a little over a year ago and was guided by two things in deciding where to live: this forum and my own exploration. And it's worked out very well!

So when you come up with specific questions or more specific criteria of what you want, post away! Until then, time is your friend, so explore the city and you may very well answer some of your own questions.

Here's a suggestion: catch the bus from Chapel Hill to Cleveland some weekday and explore!

Once you get to Cleveland, think about neighborhoods and inner-ring suburbs you want to visit, then find and print out transit maps/schedules for those areas, at:

Also, if you haven't already, consider reviewing the photos of my Cleveland rail tour I posted at:

Live in Shaker Square if you want cheap-looking, 1920's Tudor apartments with outdated decor in the restaurants along with yours truly MyTwoSense. ;)

... or, you could EAT at Yours Truly on beautiful Shaker Square.

Thats right Clvlndr, you tell'em.  Nobody and I mean nobody, disses' Da Square!  :whip:

The photo threads of Cleveland are some of my favorite threads in the forum universe ATM.  They are part of what got me comfortable with the idea that Cleveland was a place a non-threatening, suburban white kid could want to live!

My advice is visit cleveland many times...use the year to have fun in the different neighborhoods, then decide.  You have a chance to "try out the neighborhoods" in a way.  Welcome!

Well, except Shaker Square.  Avoid that area...it is near those people...

I couldn't agree more!

Just make sure to stay on the eastside

Ah, the legendary East-West rivalry.  Gotta love it.

Well I suggest [glow=red,2,300]Shaker Square[/glow]!

Recently FOUR forumers have announced that they will be relocating to the Shaker Square.  Its also a hit with those folks from Columbus.

I don't want to jump on your bad side, but for a 22 year old male who is in the hey day of socializing and what not, I'm not sure SS may be his best option. When I lived on the square I was around the same time, just post college. But you know where I spent about 92% going out to be with the other young people? Hint, its not SS.

Granted, that's not the only reason to pick a neighborhood, but SS didn't seem like a good fit for me at the time, just looking for places to tie on a few beers with many like minded people. Its going to depend on your preferences and where you put emphasis. SS has a good scene, but it didn't fit me at all at that age.

But you know where I spent about 92% going out to be with the other young people? Hint, its not SS.

Uh, the Euclid Tavern!

Close, well actually, it was everywhere else. Coventry, Lee Road and Downtown. When I lived on the Square, the Euc was long closed by then.
