June 22, 200816 yr I wish I had a Canadian friend. :( As impressive as Toronto's endless sea of towers is..I don't think they have a single skyscraper that I find appealing.
June 22, 200816 yr Toronto's skyline is Tulsa with a Space Needle. But anyway, nice photos of EPCOT Centre. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 22, 200816 yr i was about to say the same thing. excellent & fun thread, but so many very canadian....restrained?...towers.
June 22, 200816 yr thanks all for swinging' by. For the most part I kinda agree with you regarding the buildings, but mostly because the bland so far outnumbers the ones I like. I still love Canada Trust, maybe because Its an art-deco-cake-tier-reminds-of-a-modern-penobscot-throwback
June 22, 200816 yr I wish I had a Canadian friend. :( As impressive as Toronto's endless sea of towers is..I don't think they have a single skyscraper that I find appealing. I agree .. not so much that they're not appealing, but they're all relatively bland, for the most part. Still, it's an amazing city. I love that place.
June 22, 200816 yr First, thanks for the great pictures! There seems to be a consensus that there are no distinctive buildings in the Toronto skyline--this is not true--it’s just that most of the city is so relatively new it only seems that way. I’ve been going to Toronto for all of my life (that’s a long time!) for family visits, and remember a time when the two most prominent buildings in the skyline were The Royal York Hotel and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. It wasn’t until the 60’s that Toronto started to emerge into an international city from decades as a stodgy outpost of the British Commonwealth (Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter; there’s a lot to be said for tea, scones and tweed. In fact, it was that strong British influence that gave Toronto a lot of its character--in a good way--that remains today). The population of the greater Toronto area is now many times the size it was fifty years ago. As a result of such rapid growth, so much of the city looks disturbingly, antiseptically, new—resulting in a skyline with very little diversity, historical significance, or gravitas. Again, there are some distinctive buildings—The Toronto Dominion Centre by Mies van der Rohe (the first really major skyscraper to dramatically change the skyline); and the curved City Hall also from the late 60’s, was considered daring for its time—you just have to look harder for the architectural gems because so many have been lost in the overall forest of mediocrity. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

As a result of such rapid growth, so much of the city looks disturbingly, antiseptically, new—resulting in a skyline with very little diversity, historical significance, or gravitas. This can be said for many American cities that have experienced explosive growth in the past 30-50 years as well. Miami, Houston, and LA come to mind. As you mentioned, these cities do have some distinctive buildings. They are just overpowered by tall, bland, square boxes of glass. IMO some distinctive crowns or spires could go a long way in helping out some of those boring boxy type buildings. Nice. But what the hell was up with the Richard Simons inspired billboard? LOL! I thought the same thing. It looks like someone photoshopped another person's head on Richard Simmons's body.
June 22, 200816 yr okay, richard simmons turns heads, but the doggie only gets on comment? They are both advertising for the same thing, just different companies.
June 23, 200816 yr Awesome set of skyline shots! Did you get some street level photos as well? No, after getting back to Cleveland, i realized that I totally spaced on street shots. I'll be back in Toronto probably two more times before year's end, so don't worry.

I'll be back in Toronto probably two more times before year's end, so don't worry. If you haven’t already done so, next time you’re in Toronto check out the Beaches neighborhood. It’s a few miles east of downtown along Queen St East--for a few blocks on either side, with the nicer part stretching down to the lake. It used to be a regular, working class area that, like every other place, has become yuppiefied. Still there’s a nice park and yes, actually a beach along the lake (Kew Beach); and a lot of lively activity on Queen St. Probably best to take the streetcar, as the subway is farther up (though I do not think that’s where the “clothing optional” beach that was alluded to earlier is; then again I haven't been there in a long time). http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
June 23, 200816 yr Yeah, My buddy recently relocated from Edmonton to Toronto, so he's still getting the feel for the area. He lives in Yonge-Eglington. The clothing optional beach is on Toronto-Island.

June 24, 200816 yr Gah, Toronto is my favorite city, hands down. I feel the same ... what an amazing city.
June 25, 200816 yr Wow. I'm going back to Toronto during the summer for sure. It's a little chilly in November.
June 25, 200816 yr Sorry - Richard Simmons made me blurt out "WHAT in gay hell is THAT?!?" Believe it or not, when I made my comment, I pictured MayDay saying this (along with a lot more things not appropriate for the forum) and rolling his eyes!! LMAO!!
June 25, 200816 yr Excellent...I love Toronto; the exchange rate is depressing though. I'll be there in two days!!
June 25, 200816 yr Excellent...I love Toronto; the exchange rate is depressing though. I'll be there in two days!! I'll be there 9/11! ColDayMan gives great recommendations on what to visit/see ... you should shoot him a PM if you aren't already familiar with the area.
June 26, 200816 yr ^ if you ever visit SSP you know who miketoronto is....for as annoying as he is online, he is actually a great guy in person and he loves to showcase his city. I'll be in Toronto with the girlfriend and she couldn't give a rats ass about admiring the urban fabric of a cosmopolitan city- she'd rather drink cosmopolitans while admiring fabric. But I do want to check out the Beaches, Yorkville, and LittleItalyToronto.
June 26, 200816 yr ^ Ha! Yep, I know who miketoronto is. Cosmopolitan is definitely a word that summarizes Toronto well. Also, I think these skyline shots don't do the city justice when it comes to architecture. From the streets, it looks a little different.
June 26, 200816 yr Agreed. As nice as TO's skyline is, the streetlevel is what won me over when I visited. Incredibly vibrant.

June 27, 200816 yr Agreed. As nice as TO's skyline is, the streetlevel is what won me over when I visited. Incredibly vibrant. Was/is anyone else bothered by Toronto and its amazingly narrow sidewalks? Chicago also has notably small sidewalks, particularly Clark Street. June 27, 200816 yr It was just weird, there's areas around yonge-eglinton that still have the standard 4 (?) ft wide. Even the main stretches around the subway stations were seemingly only 8 ft.
July 3, 200816 yr Toronto's street life more than makes up for the Skyscraper Factory effect. I'm much more of a Montreal Man myself. Talk about street life there. Sacre bleu!
July 3, 200816 yr I did have a few moments of "Me, bowling ball - you (oblivious pedestrians) pins!!!" last weekend. I felt like the ice-breaking boats on the Lake  clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
