Stuart Lichter, the California developer who had been negotiating to purchase Norwalk Furniture Corp. and save its 876 jobs, confirmed this morning that the deal has collapsed.

The northern Ohio maker of quality home furniture early Wednesday idled workers at its headquarters and factory in Norwalk, 60 miles west of Cleveland, and also employees at its Fulton, Miss., plant.

It’s official. Norwalk Furniture Corp. is history.

While talks continue to sell the 106-year-old company, Chairman Jim Gerken announced Tuesday that all layoffs from the old company are permanent. If the company is sold, former Norwalk Furniture employees would have to be hired by the new owners.

NORWALK - The Norwalk Commons still has a long way to go.

Much of the complex remains bare land. Piles of dirt sit where restaurants and a hotel are expected to be built.

But in the back part of the development, near the intersection of Stower Lane and Norwalk Commons Drive, contractors are working hard to finish Redwood Village Luxury Suites by Christmas. The 56-unit, upscale-condominium complex has a grand opening scheduled for Oct. 11.

The first buildings at Redwood Village Luxury Suites will be complete next week and agents are already pre-leasing for the city's newest housing option.

"They're like little houses," said Jeff Ondo, regional manager for Redwood Management Company. The gated community is part of the Pride One development of Norwalk Commons on the north side of Norwalk.

NORWALK — Huron County could be getting a centralized dispatch location which would save money and improve efficiency, but could also mean loss of jobs.

The Huron County 911 Committee recently discussed the concept of uniting every dispatch system into one location, likely on Shady Lane Drive in Norwalk, said County Commissioner Gary Bauer. "It is the direction people are going," said Bauer of centralized operations.

Renamed this topic to conform with other (Erie, Sandusky, Seneca) county's topics.....

Apple's closing at end of year

The Apple's store in Norwalk will close by the end of the year when the company’s five-year lease for the 205 Milan Ave. building ends.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was surprising (and bad) news; Apples was my family's store of choice.  Combined with the troubled local economy, the fact that Super Walmart built directly across the parking lot from Apples probably didn't help.

'Sometimes it's not good to be No. 1'

"Sometimes it's not good to be No. 1."

That's what Melissa James, the executive director for the Norwalk Area-Huron County Chamber of Commerce, had to say about Huron County's 13.5 percent unemployment rate in December. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (JFS) announced Tuesday the figure topped the list among the state's 88 counties.

Norwalk's own Sears store opens

NORWALK - Even without a sign announcing its presence, the new Sears store on Main Street drew a couple hundred patrons Saturday, owner Jim Graves said.

The roughly 7,200 square-foot store, with an additional 5,000 square feet of storage space, opened for business Saturday five days after the store's interior was little more than some pegboards and display cabinets.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is certainly a pleasant surprise, given Norwalk's particularly rough economic times and the tendency for new stores to locate outside of the central business district on US 250 near the Erie County line.

:-)

Not too surprised at this one, given the economic climate (specifically of Huron County, whose unemployment rate was nearly 20% this past month)

Rumors have been circulating for months and Norwalk Mayor Sue Lesch confirmed it this week — Applebee’s is not coming to Norwalk in 2009.

But Lesch still holds out hope that the restaurant chain will come to the community once the economy picks up.

“I haven’t given up on Applebee’s,” she said, adding that the chain will not build any new restaurants this year. “Hopefully they will be building soon and hopefully it will be in Norwalk. I’d like them to know we still want them here.

By AARON KRAUSE - Reflector Staff Writer | Wednesday February 03 2010, 9:21am

WILLARD - Mercy Willard Hospital is planning to build a $40.5 million, two-story facility, with groundbreaking scheduled for July.  Marsha Danhoff, rural division senior director, said the current 80,000 square-foot hospital is landlocked on 1.6 aces at 110 E. Howard St.

The new 101,000 square-foot property will be located on the corner of U.S. 224 and Neal Zick Road and stand on 44 acres. The hospital purchased the property in 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in August or September and hospital officials expect work to be complete in Spring 2012.
