Does anyone think the movie ATL had anything to do with it? I head someone got shot and killed in Downtown Minneapolis too. I'm just hoping a simple movie wouldn't cause such mayham.

^No, I don't think a movie had anything to do with it. I hate when there is a shooting at a movie with rappers in it and people automatically blame it on the movie. I think it had to do solely with the ignorance and stupidity of the person who shot the gun.

^Although I don't think the movie itself influenced a shooting or fighting, it certainly let to concentration of a clientele Friday that was rowdy and obnoxious. I've been to the Levee many, many times and I have never felt as uncomfortable as I did on Friday. It seems like everytime I go there it gets worse and worse. Each time there are more punk kids with no respect for fellow human beings.

I completely agree with you, Haynes.

Nothing is safe anymore. I'm just gonna sit inside my house all the time and stay glued to CNN and hope for the best :[

Didn't you hear? Staying in your house isn't safe either, you have toxic mold and all that kind of stuff. And don't forget that a large percentage of all accidents happen around the house.

I guess I'll have to live in a bubble then :[

Maybe we're just lucky, but my wife and I continue to have good experiences at the Levee. In fact, I've never seen an unruly crowd or even a particularly large crowd of unsupervised teenagers of any description around there. It's often crowded on weekend nights, but not a crowd, if that makes any sense.

I can think of two other experiences, in Kalamazoo and Boston, where there was an unusual crowd of rowdy kids in the theater on the opening weekend of "gangsta" movies. I don't see why the Levee would be any different.

I'm sure this "incident" will prompt the management to beef up its security and crowd control.

Yeah, I've never had an issue there. Teenagers are punks, no doubt, and I may get annoyed because they're, you know, breathing and stuff, out in public - but I've never had an issue there.

I like when they have security standing inside the theater during the opening weekends for movies. People can be way too loud and if they make noise they just get kicked out of the theater. Say all the bad things you want about Newport but if you live in Cincinnati you know it's still better than the Showcase in Bond Hill.

Firm finds space atop Levee

BY CLIFF PEALE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

NEWPORT - Wendy Vonderhaar's real estate agent warned her that the next potential office space he was showing her would be different.

But when she walked into the unfinished space above Gameworks at Newport on the Levee, the owner of Intrinzic Marketing & Design Inc. didn't hesitate in taking it.

We went to Shadowbox at the Levee last night. Security was visibly stepped up, and everything was fine. The crowds were smallish for a Friday night, though I suspect that was due to the severe thunderstorm warning in place at the time than anything else.

I guarantee you that if this had happened in the inner city, the paper would not have gone out of their way to write a story like this one. From the 4/8/06 Enquirer:

PHOTO: A security guard checks patrons' identification March 31 after a loud noise led one off-duty officer to think a gun had been fired. Patrons under 18 were not allowed to enter unless attending a movie. The Enquirer/Carrie Cochran

Levee patrons haven't been scared away

NEWPORT - University of Cincinnati freshman Maggie Wilhelm had just sat down in Dewey's Pizza at Newport on the Levee when a manager ordered everyone to crouch under the tables.

Sales associate Nalom Voeun locked the doors at Status/Skeffington's after seeing throngs of people run for the exits.

Moe's sets Levee opening

Cincinnati Business Courier - 1:50 PM EDT Monday

Moe's Southwest Grill, a fast-casual restaurant that specializes in Tex-Mex cuisine, will open April 20 at Newport on the Levee. The eatery is located on the Riverwalk next to Johnny Rocket's.

Moe's also features pick-up service at the Newport entertainment venue's Valet Circle.

Newport on the Levee features the Newport Aquarium, GameWorks and Shadowbox Cabaret, as well as a 20-screen movie theater, restaurants and retail outlets.

moes is a knockoff chipotle....both are terrible in my opinion

What??? Chipotle is the bomb.

There's one in Beavercreek. I'd say it's more similar to Baja Fresh, but I was not impressed and have not gone back.

There was a Moe's here in Madison that, despite being in a prime location for the foot traffic of zillions of students, apparently went out of business or something (all I saw were the remains of it). So either it sucked or the burrito market was oversaturated.

Had no idea that there was a Newport-on-the-Levee thread!

Here's an unsolicited out-of-towner's review ... I took my two kids to Cincy last weekend ... their first time in the Queen City ... and we spent much of Saturday at Newport on the Levee. Parking was easy and cheap; the setting is great. We did the Aquarium, then spent a couple of hours at Gameworks and ended with a movie.

The place was clean, and by the time we left the movie, the place was quite crowded. There's alot of empty space, of course, which was disappointing to see. We do a trip down to Easton in Columbus about once a month, and I thought that NOTL measured up fairly well in comparison (on a smaller scale, of course).

A handful of photographs (with the required shark picture)...

Yeah, I'm definitely not on the NOTL-bashing team. It's fairly compact (considering all it has in it), pedestrian-friendly, garage parking (with more surface lots than I'd like, but I'd imagine those will be developed at some point), draws folks who happily mill around outside enjoying the views, it's the primary traffic draw for the pedestrian bridge (which is one of the greatest things we have on the riverfront today), and my wife and I can walk to a movie (with super-comfy stadium seating) and a bookstore and catch dinner, and we live in Walnut Hills...a cab ride home is $8, and it makes for a wonderful day. I'm sure NOTL is also a major traffic draw for the riverfront parks, and it'll be a great accompaniment to whatever goes in at the Banks.

I love that it always comes back to burrito discussions on this board and I can never stay out of them. Baja Fresh is better than Moe's and Chipotle. I think they both suck also :-)

My opinion on NOTL is that it is what it is. I rarely patronize it, but I don't hate it either. It's a nice entertainment destination that people of different age groups can enjoy and it has spurred a lot of additional urban development around it. I've always hated malls and NOTL feels like a mall to me even if there is very little retail, but I guess there is something to be said for having all of the dining and entertainment options in a compact location. For me personally, if it were more spread out along the street and not in a box I think I would like it a lot more.

Haha. It does always end with a discussion about burritos!

Honestly, I think Newport On the Levee is great and the reason why I say that is because I don't think there's anything wrong with a little healthy competition. If it wasn't for Newport, maybe people wouldn't be so eager to have big projects like The Banks.

The thing that really bugs me about NOTL is the theater/mall structure. It looks like, well, a big-box store with some contrasting colors, just plain ugly. I guess a positive is there really isn't all that much to do once you've seen the aquarium (which I assume people don't generally visit more than once a year or so). After a meal and a little shopping, maybe a movie, it still (and always had anytime I've gone) needs to be supplimented by Cincy, at least if you don't live in the city and make a day out of coming downtown.

Yes quite similar to a suburban mall. This would be a glorified mall because it has an underground garage, and some outdoor walkability (not much). This must lead everyone to believe that Newport is the greatest and that Cincy is falling behind on such 'quality' projects.

hopefully you picked up on the sarcasm there

Moe's is actually much healthier than Chipotle. You can can get wheat rice there. I really like Moe's.

I just checked out the nutritional information on Moe's website. I wouldn't say that it's much healthier. My typical meal at Chipotle has fewer calories that a lot of the meals at Moe's.

White rice still isn't good for you. It has the nutritional value of cardboard. I'd rather have the wheat rice.

I'm gonna laugh so hard if Grasscat moves our post to a "Burrito Discussion" thread in Urbanbar lol...

I'm not sure if people have seen this, but it's a rendering of the 6-floor, 120,000-square foot office building that was originally proposed for the development.

It's still be pushed by Carrie Laumer Commercial Realty, but the demand's just not there.

NOTL is like a chunk of Easton with a better view

Where was that office tower supposed to be located? Hopefully in one of the surrounding blocks that are completely blocked off from the levee as it exists now. If they were to do some stuff in the surrounding areas by the levee then I might be enticed to return......until then it is a smaller version of Cincinnati Mills.

^ I thought it was supposed to go in the area where the parking lot is, but I might be wrong.

New restaurant on the Levee

Post staff report

Newport on the Levee, on the Newport riverfront, is getting a new restaurant, slated to open in late summer or early fall.

SouthView is described as an upscale restaurant serving urban soul food in a contemporary, friendly setting.

That sounds tasty...

I don't understand why the Cincy side declined to get involved. That's dumb. I happened to be near the river last year when this was going on and it was fun to watch. Those boats fly and I think it's free to attend. I hope the bridge climb is still open this weekend, I plan on making the trek.

ChampBoat Racing on river this weekend

By Jonathan Smith, Post staff reporter

NASCAR may not be bringing its road show to Northern Kentucky any time soon, but "NASCAR on water" is.

The ChampBoat Racing Series arrives on the Newport waterfront this weekend for its second event of the season, the Greater Cincinnati Grand Prix.

^This does seem a bit odd....I would hope to think that the CRC has some logical reason behind their decision.

Theater tries new approach

BY VAL PREVISH | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR

NEWPORT - A small-business makeover is helping the owners and managers of Shadowbox theater take a new look at how they draw an audience, and the result is helping its performance on the bottom line.

Just over a year ago, Fortune Small Business magazine featured the Newport on the Levee sketch comedy club in its "Small Business Makeover" series. A team of experts from across the country brainstormed on how to brand Shadowbox to help potential show-goers understand what the troupe is.

Newport-On-The Levee Plans New Motel, Office Buildings

LAURA HORNSBY / WCPO NEWS

February 8, 2007

NEWPORT - It looks like the bustling Newport-on-the-Levee entertainment complex could be moving closer to growing again.

Developers of the complex are now asking Kentucky to extend its ten year sales tax rebate for an additional six years.

Developers of the complex are now asking Kentucky to extend its ten year sales tax rebate for an additional six years.

Do people think this is likely to happen, or do you think they'll have a battle?

But levee officials say projected sales tax revenue has fallen short because of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the Comair strike, Cincinnati race riots and a general downturn in the economy.

No, this is not the reason it has fallen short on taxes; it is because they can not fill their traditional retail space, the IMAX is empty, and the restaurants turn over quite frequently. The place is sucky as far as retail goes and will never be a shopping destination. I do wish them the best in expanding the place and making it more mixed-use, but I do not see how that will help out the retail situation.

Levee seeking a deal on taxes

By Stephenie Steitzer

Post staff reporter

A Cincinnati company that owns Newport on the Levee says it would expand the popular entertainment complex if Kentucky lawmakers would be willing to pass a bill extending its tax rebates for another six years.

The Ackermann Group proposes spending $80 million to $100 million to build an expansion that could include retail, condos, office space or a hotel, said President and CEO Dobbs Ackermann.

The catch: The group is asking the legislature to give the Levee more time to recoup a portion of its $160 million original investment in the form of sales tax credits.

Developers of the complex are now asking Kentucky to extend its ten year sales tax rebate for an additional six years.

Do people think this is likely to happen, or do you think they'll have a battle?

I just don't know...logic would say that they might have a battle on their hands, but the State of Kentucky has pretty much had an open cash flow to Nky over the past few years. I am hesitant to believe they are going to cut off their unabated support for Nky now.

But levee officials say projected sales tax revenue has fallen short because of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the Comair strike, Cincinnati race riots and a general downturn in the economy.

Wouldn't the riots have helped Newport's business? If people think Cincinnati is too unsafe, they'd go to Newport. Plus, outside of OTR or parts of downtown, I don't think the riots have had much of an effect on todays business climate.

I wouldn't think the riots or 9-11 would have any impact on local visitors to NOTL. However, they could be referring to a drop in out of town visitors to the Cincinnati area. I think including 9-11 is a bit of a stretch, but I'm not really familiar with what the overall drop in domestic air travel has been to Cincinnati and similar destinations since then.

Bill could bring $100M to Newport

FRANKFORT - A tax break that developers say could add an additional $100 million of new development at Newport on the Levee passed the state House of Representative Thursday and is awaiting approval of the state Senate.

The bill would extend a 10-year sales tax rebate another six years for developers

I wonder where they are planning to build this motel and office building. They have the space next to the IMAX theater where they had a skating rink a couple years ago, and the surface parking lot east of the existing structure. I'm guessing they'll build up on that, which will be a shame because it will cut off the excellent skyline view from the biergarten at Hofbrauhaus.

yeah, it would be built on the surface lot, which would be great. I don't go to HBH often, but I'd much rather be outside and have a view of a lively built streetscape than a parking lot or distant skyline.

Here are some pics of what used to stand in the big parking lot...

1999 shot from the L&N railroad approach before it was fenced off.

2001-13.jpg

Jan 2001 shot looking east at Saratoga St., Hofbrauhaus is the building at right behind the billboards. Why Miss Cadie's Saloon and the buildings on the south north of the block were demolished is a mystery. If a building as solidly mediocre as Hofbrauhaus's could be turned into a tourist trap, so could they. But the whole thing is that preexisting buildings prevent NOL from being the safe island it must be to separate the utopic fantasy of this kind of urban redevelopment from reality. I'd bet close to zero people each day walk across to the Southgate House just to see what goes on in there.

I've also noticed that one-by-one properties in the area have been demolished for parking, let there be no doubt with the clowns in Newport no building is sacred.

Nice to see someone fighting for this project, but I hate when politicians attach things as riders to unrelated bills, the whole system needs to be fixed. If a proposal can't stand on its own, then it should not be allowed to ride the tails of another bill.

Levee tax break still breathing

Amendment attached to unrelated measure

BY PATRICK CROWLEY | [email protected]

A Northern Kentucky state lawmaker is orchestrating an effort in Frankfort to save legislation that would lead to a multi-million-dollar investment at Newport on the Levee.

Rep. Dennis Keene, a Wilder Democrat who represents Newport, filed an amendment Friday to an unrelated Senate bill to extend the Levee's 10-year sales tax credit.

But the whole thing is that preexisting buildings prevent NOL from being the safe island it must be to separate the utopic fantasy of this kind of urban redevelopment from reality.

I am as much for preservation as the next guy but not at the expense of progress.

"The new levee development could pump $16 million to $100 million dollars in new investment in this area, along with as many as 1,200 new jobs."

^I'm just saying they probably had Miss Cadie's Saloon demolished because it was seen as competition with new bars in the development. I believe the Southgate House is on the historic register or else it woud have been demolished too. Hoffbrauhaus opened a year or two after the levee.
