June 27, 200816 yr I'm afraid to ask where this place is. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 27, 200816 yr Looks kinda cute. Especially like the Marathon gas station kind of wedged in a corner. Those border towns are always a different breed. The name is awful, and what do you call the inhabitants? Hicks, Hickies, Hickites, Hickians, Hickvillians?
June 27, 200816 yr I'm afraid to ask where this place is. It's in Northwest Ohio in the Defiance area.
June 27, 200816 yr There's also a Hicksville, Long Island, New York....strange. Hicksville, Ohio actually looks pretty nice.
June 27, 200816 yr There's also a Hicksville, Long Island, New York....strange. Hicksville, Ohio actually looks pretty nice. Home of Metro NY's first Ikea! Says a lot right?
June 27, 200816 yr Nice photos Ink. Despite it's name, this farming community (grain silos in the background) looks fairly prosperous and there's a good sampling of historic buildings surviving, most in good repair. However, architecturally, I did not see any standouts. John S.
June 27, 200816 yr Hey Ink, is this the start of of "Ohio towns with a funny name" series? I'm up for it if you're willing to do all the work. ;)
June 27, 200816 yr Back in the day, when everyone in England was named William, Robert, or Richard, there were so many people with the same name that several nicknames, with different initial letters, were devised. That's why we have Will and Bill; Rob and Bob; Rick, Rich, and Dick. Some of these fell out of fashion as names: Hob, Dob, Hitch... I am sure that Hick is a derivation from Richard.
June 28, 200816 yr Been there -- it's a rather nice farm town. They have a neat old-school fairgrounds there. Did you drink the local water? If you had, you'd know why they have a water store right downtown; Well water in that part of the border area is sulfurous. It has a yellow-rust tinge to it and smells like rotten eggs. Don't even think about making coffee with it; when you boil it, the stink will run you out of the kitchen!
June 29, 200816 yr That must be some strong sh!t in Hicksville. It is. The hot springs in resorts like French Lick and West Baden Springs in Southern Indiana were sulfur springs, and the water was thought to be therapeutic both for bathing or soaking in, and for ingesting. Drinking the strong stuff will really clean you out in a hurry! The resort at French Lick bottled theirs and shipped it all over the country under the name, "Pluto Water." To make sure it would work as advertised, they spiked it with epsom salts.
