Posted July 1, 200816 yr So I got a free plane ticket about a year back that allowed me to go round trip on any Midwest Airlines flight. Of all the cities I could've gone to I chose Cleveland because it was somewhere I'd never been and it is the largest city in the great state of Ohio. I flew in from Milwaukee on Monday morning. I arrived at Cleveland Hopkins at about 9:30 AM, so I had the whole day to explore. Day one, Monday June 23rd. 1. RTA station at Cleveland Hopkins 2. Airport Station platform 3. First glimpse of that beautiful skyline 4. 5. RTA platform at Tower City Center, the hub of everything Cleveland 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. Tower City Center has got to be one of the best designed urban malls I've ever seen. They still have some nice shops and a bustling food court, but most of the high end shopping has left. 14. 15. The food court is DIRECTLY under Huron St. The whole room shakes as the cars go overhead. It's wild. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. First view of Public Square, with the Soldiers & Sailors Monument and the former BP Tower. 21. Key Tower, the tallest building in Ohio. 22. Terminal Tower, the second tallest building and one of the most beautiful train terminals I've ever seen. 23. The Cleveland Public Library 24. 25. So MayDay met up with me here, and was taking photos right next to me. I'm sure his are way better than mine, but I haven't seen them on here yet so I'll post regardless. 26. The famous Arcade. What a beautiful hotel. 27. 28. 29. The Federal Reserve Bank 30. 31. This was a beautiful map in the Federal Reserve Bank, sorry it's blurry. 32. The Pope, MayDay and I went out to lunch at this restaurant with a beautiful view. The food was great, but I can't remember the name of the place. (anybody?) 33. 34. This is where I left MayDay. He was very helpful in getting my bearings. 35. I like this shot. 36. The Galleria at Erieview is another great urban mall that's nearly empty. The food court was, once again, hopping. I can't believe the wealth shopping spaces in downtown, and they're all incredibly designed. 37. 38. The FREE stamp. I don't get it personally, but it seems to be popular so whatever. 39. Cleveland Browns Stadium 40. The North Coast area 41. RTA North Coast Station 42. 43. I took it all the way out to Shaker Square, which has the Rapid beautifully integrated into the square. 44. Larchmere had some cool shops that were in converted houses. 45. 46. 47. 48. While waiting for the bus at Larchmere and Martin Luther King, I spotted the skyline in the distance. 49. 50. 51. Typical RTA signage. 52. I like the RTA buses. They're nice and roomy. That's it for day one. Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

July 1, 200816 yr Nice. Your pictures were fine, actually very nice! I'm glad you enjoyed Cleveland, but could I ask a favor. Can you break this up?? It hogged up a lot of memory and ran really slow, I suspect others might have trouble as well. Oh and one last thing, who told you Tremont was Cleveland best neighborhood? Humph!
July 1, 200816 yr Phenomenal photos, though UO wouldn't load them all. It'd be excellent if you could break them up a bit. Glad you enjoyed the trip!
July 1, 200816 yr I had no trouble seeing all the pics and it didn't run slow for me...and by the way...great set!
July 1, 200816 yr Hahaha! You all need to come to Case to benefit from our rediculous internet connection. No problems loading here! Great pics.... You know, I've lived here for six years and haven't even seen some of those places before! That's sad...
July 1, 200816 yr No problems with my computer (Go Apple) and very cool you decided to come to C Town. Thanks for posting!!!!
July 1, 200816 yr You sure covered a lot of ground. I'm glad you enjoyed! This cool old apartment building was resonating with VERY uncultured noise. Very diplomatic. :-) btw- Columbus is Ohio's largest "city"
July 1, 200816 yr I think most people have a perception that Tremont is a bustling 'hood - which it is at certain times (monthly Art Walk, most good-weather weekend evenings, etc.), but by and large it's a quieter residential area. Much of the hype of Tremont is due to it rebounding from the days when it was a mix of the Wild West and Mad Max. It still has a ways to go but if you'd told someone in 1985 that Tremont would have dozens of $300K+ townhomes and renovated workers cottages selling for close to $200K, they'd have laughed you out of the room. Great meeting you, glad you enjoyed your time here - and great set of pics! :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
July 1, 200816 yr now that I can see ALL the pictures, I realize you took a pic of my Aunt and Uncles house along with the Finest home in Greater Cleveland which is the ONLY SINGLE FAMILY HOME MTS would live in (other than my parents) the ULTRA FABULOUS Stratford Palace (picture no. 130).
July 1, 200816 yr I drive past that house every day going to and from work right now.... I've often wondered about the people that live there. You know, MTS, the first time I read your comment I thought it said that your aunt and uncle live there, and I was gonna be like "Dammmmmnnnnnn"

You know, MTS, the first time I read your comment I thought it said that your aunt and uncle live there, and I was gonna be like "Dammmmmnnnnnn" The palace is about 10k square feet, I've snopped in the windows and seen the garden. My aunt and mom have been inside, but I've not been that lucky. My mom said the inside is spectacular. Although my aunt/uncle have about 7.5k squ. feet, their home is very nice and my cousins were very fortunate to grow up in the manner in which they did.
July 1, 200816 yr Alright, that should be a little easier to load. MTS, that's so funny that you brought up pic 130. I almost put a comment on it when I was posting because that it BY FAR my favorite house on that street. Having relatives there, do you know if residents ever had a problem with the streetcar posts still being in the median? I noticed them about half way down the street, and while them might NOT be original I'm pretty sure they are. It's a really cool look at the past, but I'm used to rich neighborhoods ripping out and replacing things like that as soon as possible.

Fairmount was the route of a street car line, that went up to the Country Club. They can't move the poles because it's a "historic" district. IIRC, at one point when the Shaker Rapid was being rebuilt the city of CH and RTA were talking about rebuilding the rail line. It would be two lines starting from the University RTA station. One line would be on Fairmount and go to John Carroll Univer. The second line would be on Euclid Hts. Blvd./Coventry/Mayfield line rebuilt to go to Severence and a third line was being considered for Monticello. During rushhours the trains would go downtown and end in the "old Shaker Rapid" terminal and during the day they would end just east of the current Univ. Circle station with connections to the platform. If they had built a line on Fairmount, the Green line wouldn't be so bad now.
July 1, 200816 yr Wow, thanks for the info. Where is the "old Shaker Rapid" terminal? It's adjacent to the new terminal in Tower City. When you're going into Towercity (from the east) you can on occasion see it. If you were to break thru the wall that the West Bound trains(water front line) trains run on, you'll be in an office that is in between the new station and the old shaker station. here is a picture from wikipedia http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f9/RTA_Blue_and_Green_Line_Public_Square_Station_Platform..jpg/767px-RTA_Blue_and_Green_Line_Public_Square_Station_Platform..jpg&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:RTA_Blue_and_Green_Line_Public_Square_Station_Platform..jpg&h=600&w=767&sz=72&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=Xx4wEVTd-2vBuM:&tbnh=111&tbnw=142&prev=/images%3Fq%3Drapid%2Bstation%2Bat%2Bcleveland%2Bunion%2Bterminal%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN See the row of offices, on the left side of the picture? On the other side of those offices, is the "new Tower City station" that is currently in use. In the past the "new station" we use today was solely used for the Cleveland Rapid or "Redline" as the young folks today say. The Shaker & Van Aken lines turned off upon entering Union Terminal/Tower City into their own station. If you are on the corner of Superior & prospect, you can look down and see the stations tracks.
July 1, 200816 yr That's cool about the other station - I didn't even know it was there! Also..... I sure do wish RTA had built lines up Fairmount and Euclid Heights. That would be really convenient for Case students without cars to go shopping and for JC students to get to the city (this coming from a former Case undergrad who didn't have a car at the time).
July 1, 200816 yr Looks like the RTA was packed as usual.  HUH? Are you referring to picture no. 52?
July 1, 200816 yr the ULTRA FABULOUS Stratford Palace (picture no. 130). Don't you mean the Tremaine-Gallagher House? But, yes, I have always thought that was the nicest single-family home in all of Northeast Ohio. The inside is supposed to be even nicer than the outside. http://chhistory.org/FeatureStories.php?Story=NationalRegister&View=TremaineGallagherHse§ion=3

July 1, 200816 yr That house was featured on HGTV's show "Dream Drives" back in 2005. http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_drd/episode/0,1806,HGTV_3830_3418,00.html

July 3, 200816 yr Great photos! Lots of coverage! That's cool about the other station - I didn't even know it was there! Also..... I sure do wish RTA had built lines up Fairmount and Euclid Heights. That would be really convenient for Case students without cars to go shopping and for JC students to get to the city (this coming from a former Case undergrad who didn't have a car at the time). There were lines down the middle of Euclid Heights and Fairmount boulevards that stopped service in the 1950s. But the city of Cleveland Heights bought and preserved the Euclid Heights line until the mid-1960s in the hopes of reviving it. But the city thought the $16 million price tag was too expensive (even if federal funds covered much of the cost). July 3, 200816 yr The inside is supposed to be even nicer than the outside. About 20 years or so ago, that house was on the market ($799,000). These are some pictures that were featured in Smythe-Cramer's 'Fine Ohio Homes' magazine
July 5, 200816 yr Thanks for sharing your pictures. The hubby and I just got back from a week-long "visit" while we arranged for housing prior to our move at the end of this month. Your pictures brought back a lot of memories and also showed us a few places we want to see.... like the botantical garden
