So I got a free plane ticket about a year back that allowed me to go round trip on any Midwest Airlines flight.  Of all the cities I could've gone to I chose Cleveland because it was somewhere I'd never been and it is the largest city in the great state of Ohio.

I flew in from Milwaukee on Monday morning.  I arrived at Cleveland Hopkins at about 9:30 AM, so I had the whole day to explore.

Tuesday was my favorite day.

53.  This is the street that I stayed off of in Detroit Shoreway.  The streets are incredibly narrow in Cleveland (at least compared to Milwaukee.)

54.  The Sidewalks too.  I could barely fit between the bush and the pole.

DSC02941.jpg

55.  New houses in the Battery Park area

DSC02942.jpg

56.  And plenty of room to grow.

DSC02943.jpg

57.  There's a strange little Italian village on 70th St north of Detroit.  The fire hydrants, utility poles, benches and flags were all Italian.

58.  Big jump here, this is the Stokes Windmere Station in East Cleveland.  The people in this city weren't too friendly so I walked around for an hour without my camera out in the open and then hopped back on the Rapid.

59.  The art integrated into the Euclid Corridor project is strange.

DSC02946.jpg

60.  The beautiful Cleveland Art Museum.  Thank God I went on Tuesday and got this shot because on Wednesday they threw up a horribly ugly OP-EN sign across the front.

61.  The Methodist church in University Circle is probably one of my favorite churches in the US.  It's such a unique design.  Any info on it would be great.

87.  Cleveland has a great wayfinding system.  These easy to use signs with maps and neighborhood title are all across the city.  It's a really nice thing to come across in a not-so-popular neighborhood and I used them regularly on my trip.

Of course it does, because it is! :-D

Are you serious?  I'm sorry but I think that new back half is really really ugly.  Does anybody know who the architect is?

PS - I need to thank you MTS.  I thought I was the worst stalker out there, but then I went to Cleveland.  I love it.

Is the Garfield Monument/Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland Heights or East Cleveland? I had thought it was the latter.

I think that MTS was referring to the shot of the original 1916-built section of the museum as taken from across Wade Lagoon.

The original (1916) building was designed by Hubbell and Benes.  Marcel Breuer was the architect for the 1971 expansion that you mainly see from Wade Oval; this is the dark granite entrance.  Rafael Vinoly is the architect for the present expansion linking the two main buildings.

Or, you could read more about it here: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,2624.0.html

Okay, then I completely agree.  The view across Wade Lagoon is definitely a million dollar shot....except for right now because of that ugly sign.

it's property lies within all three cities.  I think there is Map that shows this when you come in on Mayfield.

Ajknee,    I'm speaking about the Lagoon shot.

As ugly-ass as the Peter B. Lewis building may be (the Frank Gehry one), I still like it because it's not a box.  Although, it is kind of a pain during the winter because it makes killer falling icicles....  At any rate - sort of related - I was running on the treadmill last night @ 121, and the Simpsons episode where they get Frank Gehry to design Springfield a new concert hall that ends up turning into the Burns State Penitentiary was on.  It looked freakishly like PBL - got a good laugh.

Is the Garfield Monument/Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland Heights or East Cleveland? I had thought it was the latter.

It is bordered by both cities but is in the city of Cleveland.

Ah, you are correct!

It looks like the Garfield Monument lays right on the border of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights with a little more than half on the Cleveland side, based on this map: http://www.lakeviewcemetery.com/lakeview.pdf

Yes a little bit of the monument is in CH.

I believe "Nuclear Free Zone" refers to a ban on transporting Nuclear waste through the city, much like the "HC" crossed out signs you see on the Freeways around the city.  I always liked the horizontal lines of the museum's modern addition, but I think I am in the minority with that opinion.  It is very simple, and takes a back seat to the original beautiful building.

One of the best phot threads I have seen on Cleveland.  Nice to see the city through a newbies eyes.

I was speaking about the enitre cemetary itself, not just the monument.

My parents were at that concert...

Great job!

It's ironic that you said "back to reality" between Legacy Village and Shaker Square.  As much as I love the square, and I do, it is no more a Georgian-era English Village than Legacy Village is whatever it pretends to be.  Just an observation.

This is a great photo tour, btw.  Thanks for posting it, and I am glad you had such a good time in Cleveland.

Walking around East Cleveland - Yikes!!

Walking around East Cleveland - Yikes!!

Ummm?  Why "Yikes"?  There are some really nice neighborhods in EC and some interesting buildings.

I was fine in EC with my camera concealed and without making eye contact.  The first time I tried to make eye contact after about an hour of walking I got a "get the f--- outta here" and a few other expletives back.  So it wasn't all sunshine and happiness.  But I was never scared for my life like I have been in Chicago's south side or in Brooklyn, IL.  (The latter is he scariest place I've ever been)

I wish you would have gotten a chance to see the Forest Hills or Nela Park sections of EC.  Lots of people -  - seem to think the entire city is in ruins.  You know how misconceptions and misinformed people are?

Brooklyn, IL....... Haha.  Leave it to the greater St. Louis area.

I like the ruins better than the Cleveland Heights spillover of East Cleveland, but that's just me.

Actually, East Cleveland spills over into Cleveland Hts.  Forest hills was an East Cleveland development formed by Rockefeller.  The development also included the Park.

I think of it the opposite way as what is spilled is more stereotypical of Cleveland Heights than East Cleveland.

The homes in EC where there first then those ranches on monticello came later.
