CU's September Construction Roundup had some distant views of the Grandview Crossing project (presumably because they couldn't get inside the perimeter construction fence surrounding the large site).  Despite not getting inside the fence, this view still shows the four-story office building and two four-story apartment buildings that are part of Phase One construction:

 

However, CU's development reporter did get inside the fence for a hard-hat tour of the Grandview Crossing project and posted those photos today:

Wish that whole section of 33 was built up. There doesn’t really appear to be many homes in the area and it would be great for actual development.

Grandview Crossing on the other side of the road is a start, but I’m still disappointed with how much of it is planned to be single story retail and surface parking.

Yeah, in my opinion that whole development is useless. It’s sad to see developers not doing much to help the huge shortfall of housing. Hopefully it changes soon though.

Weren't they limited on what they could build given that they were building on a landfill?

I've never felt you were going to naturally get good urbanism at this intersection due to the design of the roads. You would have to force it with a large scale planned development of all four corners at the same time or else you're just going to get more car stuff.

To be fair, the current Grandview Crossing development is still much better than the initial proposal.  Wasn't it originally just going to be a suburban shopping strip?  They can also still develop the parking lots in the future.

You’re right, I’m glad that proposal never happened. What we’re getting is far better than that at least. Anyway, sorry for detailing the thread! I believe there’s a separate Grandview Xing thread to further discuss this.

I was on Twin Rivers Dr earlier and noticed the Swan St connector behind this is completely built now. 

This whole area is really coming together nicely!

I was under the impression they were still waiting on approval for the Sheetz, but I went by yesterday, and they’ve started on some foundation work, so maybe it’s already been granted. 
 

 

From Grandview Crossing near the railroad tracks...  It looks like crews are mainly working on the parking garage right now. It's the building in the distance & it looks to be up to the 4th floor now.

 

 

^I worked on that parking garage. It's only 4 stories tall, so the parking level has topped out. They're working on the stairs right now, and the stair roofs go an extra floor up.

Such a good location for this. I imagine a lot of arena district and even short north people will take advantage of the late night eats after going out.

Well, this sucks. Building a gas station in 2021 doesn't make any sense, especially in an area that should be moving toward walkability. There are already two gas stations in the immediate area.

24 hr gas station that usually has relatively cheap gas.  They take pride in always having the cleanest restrooms.  And they offer cook-to-order food all day.  So you can order anything anytime and they will cook it for you fresh.

I guess so. I don't get the fascination with a glorified gas station. Here I thought Wawa was the pinnacle of fancy convenience store/gas stations (e.g. the Wegman's of the trade).

I will take UDF over Sheetz any day...unless I need to use the restroom. 

Maybe if you're thinking of the Hyde Park UDF instead of the Brice Road one.

To be fair I’ve been going to Sheetz since around 2002, they’ve lost their luster for me. I prefer get-go to them all judging strictly by their pepperoni roll offerings. UDF has the best ice cream and their UDF equivalent to Dr Pepper was my go to in college or when I get a craving for pop.

 

But if you’ve never been to a Buc-ee’s then you’ve never lived, that place is crazy and they serve true Texas bbq even at the ones in Florida!

I haven't been to any of the Columbus Sheetz yet -- the last time I ate there was probably 2003 in like Alliance or Boardman or something. I don't remember it too well other than the ordering protocol.

I wouldn't put sheetz and UDF in the same category tbh. UDF is corner store/ice cream parlor vibes. Sheetz has much more to offer. 

 

Get-Go is basically the same as sheetz, just a little more limited in menus. Giant Eagle kind of missed out on cornering the Ohio Market tbh. 

 

Sheetz, being from PA has had a relatively limited presence in Ohio. Even in NE Ohio, they aren't as prolific as they are in even NC. Sheetz and GE both being from PA offer alot of overlap but while Sheetz spent the last decade opening something close to 100 stores in NC (they have over 100 now), GE limited their expansion of the Get-Go stations with full kitchen service. 

 

And yes. Buccees is it's own madness. I do wish they brought in more of the MTO kitchen concept... even though I know darn well I'd just walk out with a BBQ sandwich anyway. And everyone knows about the big ones, but very few realize that there are tiny Buccees the size of a small BP as well. 

 

And as much of a sheetz person I am, it's a Buccees mug I use and a Buccees Christmas ornament on my tree.  Any Maverick fans? Lol. I digress. 

 

One of the benefits(?) of traveling the country by road for years is getting to know each regions cult classic gas stations? 🤷‍♂️

But on this location. It's a pipe dream to ever expect anything other than a Tuttle like set of developments. It's going to be a feeder for a long time with an 'easy in and easy out' selling point for suburbanites and commercial tenants who serve suburbanites.  As much as it really is a blank slate to start bulldozing and starting over for a new extension of Grandview or a better Grandview Yard, it doesn't have the political backing or market for it. 

 

Get-Gos are all over the map service-wise. Look at the one on 5th, it's is just gas, a few beers, a strip of chips and cigarettes basically. It was one of those tiny gas stations in the '60s that just had cigarettes and metal cans of oil inside. And one tire.

Look what happened to the poor Grandview Heights thread. 

Let's get things back to normal for Grandview then.

That rail line looks like it hasn't been used in sometime! Is it still in use at all? I live in the area I haven't seen a train on it in years. As the buckeye yard (except for the intermodal) in Hillard got shutdown some time ago, i think this line really hasn't been used much sense then - any know for certain? I can't help but think it would be a nice commuter/light rail line ... one can dream!

It's been out of use 5 or 6 years now. That's where Ringling Bros. would park and unload their train.
