Posted July 8, 200816 yr I visited an abandoned mall located in a far southern Chicago Suburb. The mall was closed in 1978 and was made famous in the 1980's Blues Brothers movie where they drive through it. There have been start-stop renovations to this place. Most of it has been gutted in recent years for asbestos abatements and renovation prep. But much of that is all on hold again. It will probably be entirely demoed. I'll upload more pics a bit later. Center Court. Recently cleaned up a bit This looks like it was a newer wing added a couple years after the mall was built. It has different construction...although cheaper since the roof has way more holes. Central Concourse Escalator from hell! I think I'll take the stairs instead Second floor of the department store
July 8, 200816 yr oh wow fantastic shots & what a great idea -- i love that scene in the blues brothers! lots 'o stuff on youtube about this mall: original scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re98R53UNwU somebody drove through it recently! :-o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J60fdK6v22w in anime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6c_kYU0hIw one of several "remixes" - augusta mall :drunk:
July 8, 200816 yr Perhaps a metaphor for the future of the consumer society. I'm visualizing Wal-Marts looking like this, only not so fancy, ten or fifteen years down the road.

July 9, 200816 yr You should post this up at http://www.uer.ca or share them at http://www.deadmalls.com Fantastic shots. Amazing that after all these years, it lies abandoned in the center of urbanicity...
July 9, 200816 yr If you google "Dixie Square Mall" you'll find lots of other pics of this place at various states of decay. The suburb of Harvey is one one of the most corrupt, messed up and broke cities in Chicagoland. I think Gary, IN is run better than that place.
July 9, 200816 yr This guy has some great ones of the mall along with a lot of other good abandonment photos http://www.chucksphotospot.com/
July 12, 200816 yr Alright.. More mall photos Surrounding the mall is new development. In fact since it's closure, it's easy to pass by because it is now blocked by quite a few buildings The grass is always greener on the other side! Thom McAn You can still see where displays and counters were from the light fixtures above I'd be shocked if this was a store. It's incredibly narrow But there are shelves and pegboard Did you hear? Penney's just installed a new atrium! The court area where the JC Penney Entrance was. In the movie, they placed Jewel's sign above the entrance, swapping locations for the end grocery store crash.: Some more super-up-to-date decor! What was once the entrance to Turn Style. I believe the only location of this now defunct chain that was never converted into anything else. Most became Targets, KMarts, etc Yikes: Another slowly collapsing store. It's eerie seeing the unpainted drywall, I'm guessing like that since the mall's opening. The 'newer' wing of the mall. TurnStyle's display 'windows' to the left. Elevator entrance on the second floor of JCPenney. Probably the only thing in the entire building that could still work. Nice Orange Julius color scheme. I think this might have been where Wards used to be. It was supposed to be renovated, but caught fire and burned down entirely Destroyed exterior. Once a copper roof, obviously scrapped.
July 13, 200816 yr It's like Lansing, but more urban. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
