Posted July 9, 200816 yr we got into cold brew coffee on another thread a bit. we might have talked about it in the past also, but its a good topic for summer i think. they may do it at starbucks, not sure, but my real question is....does any of your favorite local coffee shops do cold brew style coffee? here is an article about cold brew coffee. evdon said he tried to make it at home and it sucked. just curious anyone else ever try to make it? i have a real good version available at a coffeeshop near me, but i think i might give making it at home a try, too. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/27/dining/27coff.html
July 9, 200816 yr Starbucks does not sell toddy, aka cold brewed coffee. However, it seems to be a speciality at nearly every coffee shop in greater cleveland. I've also noticed it at the cup a joe stores in c-bus. many cleveland shops, especially phoenix, use toddy exclusively for their cold coffee drinks (iced lattes, mochas, etc) I love toddy as a summer caffeine fix as it has a very smooth taste, lacking the bitterness in hot coffee, thereby going down the hatch quite nicely.... I've been successful using a french press to make it at home. One needs to use at least double the amount of grounds as you would for hot brewing and steep it for at least 12 hours, though 24 is preferred.
July 10, 200816 yr Cold brewed ice tea can become "bacterial". If your pitcher looks "stringy", dump it because those strings are chains of bacteria.
July 11, 200816 yr straying a bit off topic here, but in light of the recent announcement by Starbucks that they're closing many outlets nationwide, there's a very funny story in today's NYTimes which more or less poses the question :wtf:, are there really that many Starbucks in NYC? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/11/nyregion/11starbucks.html?bl&ex=1215921600&en=586df8e7d68e636f&ei=5087%0A http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 11, 200816 yr child there is starbucks on every corner. They are building one on 125/ACP as we speak. They're everywhere!
July 11, 200816 yr child there is starbucks on every corner. They are building one on 125/ACP as we speak. They're everywhere! and with each new Starbucks the customer satisfaction level declines! But a couple of months ago one branch I used to visit frequently on 8th St. nr. University in the Village closed. I still can't figure that one out. It was in the heart of NYU country and always seemed busy (I used to see Chris "Mr. Big" Noth there all the time--not that we ever spoke--he's such a snob! :x). Apparently Starbucks really does not know what they're doing. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

Apparently Starbucks really does not know what they're doing. There are plenty of SB in that area to take up the slack, plus there are lots of coffee shops & diners so getting a cup of coffee isn't so difficult. Mr. Big isn't a snob, you have to understand actors/celebs. I'm not condoning his behavior, but live in an actors/celebs PERSONAL shoes for one day.

It's not that I ever went up to "Big" or anything. In fact, he was always reading the Times when I saw him and seemed pretty laid-back and friendly whenever someone said hello--very un-celebrity like, as a matter o' fact. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 11, 200816 yr hey guv i love my french press coffee (even tho it is messy). thanks for the tip on using one to make cold brew. i am gonna give it a try for sure. aww c'mon evdon just hike toward home on 8th st to astor place, you got "the world's busiest" charbuck$ and the mud truck right there - lol!
July 11, 200816 yr ^In fact you you have your choice of two Starbucks at Astor. They really are...everywhere. I actually like the one in the pavilion building across from Cooper Union though. Back on topic: I've been dying to cold brew some coffee concentrate to make mellow "instant" hot coffee. Anyone here tried that before? No doubt it will take some serious experimentation to get something decent to drink.

You’re right, it’s not that there isn’t another Starbucks I could patronize—they’re within spitting distance of each other. It’s just that I find the ambience rather disagreeable at some of them. I always love being one of the first customers at a new Starbucks: the restrooms are sparkling clean; and the staff—eager to please—is actually paying attention (although they could all do a better job of monitoring the half-n-half dispensers). Now if they could only get back to making superior coffee! (I still miss New World Coffee--the best--both hot and iced; but yes, Mud Coffee is excellent) http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 13, 200816 yr Cornerstone and Brioso (I think) have iced brews Downtown. Cup O Joe is all over and also does it. Dino´s in Upper Arlington does also as does Cafe Apropos in Harrison West.
July 27, 200816 yr the current issue of TimeOut NY has provided us with yet another technique for the preparation of brewed iced coffee (courtesy of a place called Gimme!Coffee on Mott St.)--probably similar to the NY Times approach; but my mind started to wander after I saw a second filtration was recommended (using cheesecloth, no less!). I guess I'm just lazy. Anyway, maybe someone can take the plunge (ha ha...): http://www.timeout.com/newyork/articles/restaurants-bars/41761/brewing-iced-coffee http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
September 2, 200816 yr Cold brewed ice tea can become "bacterial". If your pitcher looks "stringy", dump it because those strings are chains of bacteria. or syrupy -- dump it! Best to make fresh daily.

September 2, 200816 yr i forgot to report back. i made it a few times using the french press. i ground the coffee to a larger size grind than typical. we have a burr grinder which helps a lot for getting an even grind and that seemed to matter. using double worked best (ie., 2 scoops per cup instead of 1 as you normally would with a hot coffee maker). then you put it in the fridge overnight. the result was ok, it's definately less bitter, in fact not bitter at all. i think i like bitter tho so i gave it up.
October 3, 200816 yr Kitty's Coffee in downtown Cincinnati serves cold brewed iced coffee. Where's Kitty's? Anyway, The Coffee Emporium in downtown Cincinnati makes a good toddy. Their other location in Hyde Park does not have it, though. What they do have is an iced coffee available in about a quart sized cup that left me wide eyed for the entire day. Awakenings in Hyde Park does have toddy, and the one I had the other day was the best one I've had yet. SOOO good. I'm addicted to these things now. :(

October 3, 200816 yr Kitty's Coffee in downtown Cincinnati serves cold brewed iced coffee. Where's Kitty's? Kitty's Coffee has two locations. One is in the Merchantile Building between 4th, 5th, and Walnut Streets. They are actually inside the building near the Broadway Series office. Their other location is on Court Street between Main Street and Walnut Street (about a block South of Coffee Emporium).
October 3, 200816 yr . I can't seem to function anymore without coffee of some variety these days. I'm also an addict. It's really bad when you're known at three different coffee shops!
October 3, 200816 yr I'm also an addict. It's really bad when you're known at three different coffee shops! Only THREE? Lightweight! Whats worse is when you're known and the staff knows what drink you're going to order based on the time of day you enter the shop!
October 3, 200816 yr I'm also an addict. It's really bad when you're known at three different coffee shops! Only THREE? Lightweight! Do multiple locations count? ;) That would make it five!

October 3, 200816 yr I used to hit up the Starbucks in Columbia/Tusculum on my home from work and they actually had my coffee ready for me once, knowing I come in at that time. :(
