My Niece had to work in Chicago this weekend, so I met her and my Nephew there.  Here is a small sampling of the ~700 pictures they took.

Chicago thru the eyes of two teenagers.

My flight was majorly delayed and they took the train from the airport to the hotel all by themselves.  They're growing up.

Why is my office the ugliest building in Chicago?

Nice shots. The niece and nephew have good eyes. The "creepy" subway station shot may be appropriately labeled, but the Roosevelt station in the shot looks much, much nicer than it did when I used to wait there 25 years ago at 2 a.m. when I was a cub reporter for the City News Bureau.

I am going to be in Chicago for four days for an extended weekend. I leave tomorrow. I've passed through the city before, but never spent *real* time there.

I'll be with a couple of natives, so I'm sure I'll see some good hole in the walls (they already described a few great places), but I want to make sure I hit the gritty urban must-see places.

Any suggestions for a top-5 don't miss list of neighborhoods?

No fooling? My one guide was a city news reporter at one time (man, talk about great stories...wish I would have worked there). Another Tribber we're meeting up with got his start at City News as well. This was maybe 8 years ago, though.

Your niece and nephew look like budding urban enthusiasts!

Nice!

they did good!

ask them whose red line do they like better!

My niece and nephew were all over Chicago.  They went to neighborhoods I've never been to.  Ironically they didn't like The Loop part of Downtown, they thought it was dark and dingy, not open and nice like Cleveland.  My nephew loathes "the bean".  He was like, look at the zombies taking pictures.  He refused to take a picture of it.

Top 5..What do you really want to see?

They both liked

Like Hyde Park and the Museum of Science

Lincoln Park

Streeterville/River North and the Lower Gold Coast were a big hit since they are jr. shopaholics.  My niece could have spent the entire weekend at the corner of Oak Street & Rush.

They went to Oprahs studio in Greektown

Wicker Park

Bucktown

Halsted

Not really, my nephew is into art, painting and this past year picked up photography.

Trust me the part b pictures aren't as fun for an adult.

I'm sure they'll respond "Green line".  Yet this was the first time my brother let them go away by themselves.  They took the train from their house, near Shaker/Warrensville, to TC then transferred to the Red Line.  Got on the flight, flew to Chicago, thankgoodness they look older than they are.  Arrived in Chicago then took the Orange line to the hotel.

When I didn't show up at our designated, location they checked my flight on their iphones to see a delay and their text messages and instead of taking a cab downtown they hopped on the Orange line.  They used Google transit and the only "wrinkle" is that Google wanted them to take a bus from roosevelt for its first option instead of just transferring to the Red Line.

That they had to figure out for themselves.  Since they knew the Park Hyatt was directly infront of the water tower they were able to use landmarks.

City News -- a great place to have worked. A lousy place to be working. Terrible hours. A focus on death and destruction. Sadistic editors and Rewrite staff. Gruff cops. It was great! I'm lucky to have done it. I still see some City News alums when I'm in town and stop in the Billy Goat.

Neat shots!

Hey, you've got my sister's old Apt building in those pics!  I can't tell you how cool it is to live on the 20th floor in the center of Chicago. Awesome!

DSC01496.jpg

I like the London Exchange Building (old one center)  The whole lobby is made of gold.....sot of.

^ They called it the Stone Container Building when I worked there '85-'87 -- 15th floor, UPI, overnight shift.

Page Two: Paul Harvey's studio was there, too.

I haven't been to Chicago in a year and I miss it.  Wacker is very impressive...along with the whole Chicago River canyon of buildings.  Amazing place.

i want some dunkin donuts.
