lol.  Baby Steps  I'm hovering around 5 cups a day, which is good for me.  However, I've been a light sleeper since I was 10/11.

Maybe we can encase some of the tracks in a big tube to keep them quiet- isn't this what IIT did as part of their new student center?  CLE 2032?

Actually, I wonder if Studio Techne's new Rapid station scheme would help- doesn't it include a landscaped cap over the freight tracks right by this new building?

That would be a big tube! The railroad right of way is more than six tracks wide past Little Italy.

Even RTA planners admit that landscaped cap is a dream. They'll try to seek funding for it, but they don't have a lot of hope that they'll get it. Some RTA officials questioned whether it was even worth trying to get. Fortunately, it's still in the plan.

Check it out, Ferrari Club day:

2622627233_955c254723.jpg?v=0

We had about 25-30 Ferrari and Lamborghini cars on Mayfield during lunch time.

I was wondering why I saw so many Ferrari's recently, was that today?

SHOWOFFS!!!!

People still buy and drive those in this day of $5 gas and environmental concerns?  What's the MPG?  Not judging, just wondering.  If you were driving a Hummer on the other hand....... :whip:

If you are lucky you will get mid teens MPG. But then again, if you can afford a $200k+ sports car, the cost of gas isn't probably that large a concern of yours.

I love public transit as much as the next guy, but I've wanted a Testarossa since I was like 6 years old. I don't think the point is to drive it as much as stare at it lovingly.

The empty storefront at Murray Hill and Cornell/Edgehilll be getting a new pizza place (very close to Valentino's to the owners dismay).

The owner is the same owner as Gusto.  I believe they've already started converting it.

That place has housed so many unsuccessful restaurants......

^^No, the old art gallery.  Il Bacio is still there and doing well.

Cleveland comics legend Harvey Pekar toasted with 70th birthday `Harvey Heads' collection

The Pekar Project had it’s real-world unveiling with a party Oct. 2 at The Pennello Gallery, 12407 Mayfield Rd., in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. The gallery is displaying original art from the webcomics series in a new exhibition, “The Pekar Project Live: From Web to Walls.”

Thats #3 in the WORLD!

It should be #1!

Has anyone heard anything about any plans to rejuvenate Mayfield Theater? What a wasted space in a prime spot in L.I. Would make a great spot for foreign films, Italian films, specifically.... performing arts, or maybe even a small specialty market. Also, the corner red brick building...don't know the name...but the former Corbo's building. A great structure needing some TLC. Are they for sale? What's the word?

To Murry Hill:

WOW that is amazing!!

You seem to know a lot about Little Italy.  I saw a few of your posts and im really impressed!  Are you from the area? I would really like to know more history behind it.

^ Me? Noooo.... I am not from the actual neighborhood... but I like it and was interested in learning more about those buildings. I know at one time the theater was utilized in the mid-70's...was it not....anyone? I lived on Overlook, right above Little Italy and frequented it a lot. I am on the west side now, but still love it there. I know farther up-thread the buildings I mentioned have been discussed...and surely people want to see something done with them...But I was just checking in again if there were any updates

^^As the post says, E 4th Diva was asking Murray Hill.

HA!  Overlooked that... DUH! on me!

Using the Mayfield Theater as an arts cinema seems like a good idea, but would probably face the same problems that plagued the old Centrum Theater in Coventry-lack of parking.  Unfortunately when people want to see a movie they like cheap and easy parking.  I wish someone was willing to restore it and prove me wrong though.

Terry Tarantino has been looking into the old mayfield theater.  Not sure how pending it really is on his agenda though:

From: http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2009/05/cleveland_restaurateur_terry_t_2.html

Tarantino's wanderlust is leading him back home -- to Little Italy -- for his latest adventure. He plans to renovate the old Mayfield movie theater and turn it into a bar-restaurant.

"I'm thinking of something with a Venetian theme that serves light meals and hosts string quartets and piano players," says Tarantino. "I'm still working on the details."

Also I think there is a blip on www.littleitalycleveland.com/

I barely talk about it, but thanks for being impressed!  If you want to know some details, definitely PM me.  welcome to the forum

That would be great.  I like his style and story.  He tries to do something out of the ordinary...

This neighborhood is a walkers neighborhood--and while many visit from all over and drive, that's fine, but I would not want to sacrifice this neighborhood's walkable appeal with a parking lot or deck. There are enough people within walking distance of this place who live nearby and could sustain the theater. I lived there for a while and rarely drove anywhere. It would be beyond me that anyone who does would not chose to walk to all the little jaunts--unless you were completely physically unable--and part of the reason many people are so unhealthy these days is because they drive everywhere. Given the right mix, promotion, I could see things be a success.

The Tarantino idea sounds classy too... But I would actually like to move back into the neighborhood and would like to see a couple things open that are functional to daily neighborhood needs...Perhaps another small grocer....Not a convenient store---but a real grocer--no lottery or rot gut alcohol. Maybe a little more specialty because I like to cook.

I would love to see the old Corbo's storefront (corner of mayfield and murray hill) turned into a decked-out Italian Deli.  In my opinion that's the one thing the neighborhood is missing...besides a real grocery store.  Spuzzilo's helps with things a little bit.

^ That sounds like a great idea!  Fresh breads, cheeses, meats, some good produce....essentials, etc...  Imports. I shop at the food co-op still....  sort of in the neighborhood, I guess...but the main drag in the heart of L.I needs something as you mention that is complimentary to the theme of the neighborhood---and that would do it. I think there are enough restaurants at the moment...but lacking in the kind of thing you describe.

Does anyone know whats going on with that big @ss building on random road that was an eyesore???  In the last month they have knocked all of the windows out of it and i just saw some guys doing some work on it today.  I always thought that would be an awesome spot for something...no clue that they could possibly do with it though.

I always thought that they used that building for parking. Cars would fill it up on the weekends.

Nice little blurb in the national Italian American magazine...I wish she had better pictures though:

http://www.i-italy.org/15272/festivals-preservation-culture

"Of course, the Cleveland community’s definition of Italian may differ slightly from other cities.

To give an example of this, I present you with the Cleveland cassata cake."

I've been saying this for years, and I don't think many people realize this: the Sicilian Cassata Cake is very midwestern italian, and specifically, Cleveland.  The other staple Cleveland item is Cavatelli and Meatballs...pretty much the "normal" pasta dish in the ethnic areas.  Not so much in the rest of the country.

The first time I ever had Cassata Cake (probably from Corbo's) I began to understand what heaven must be  like.  Bought some here in Seattle it wasn't even remotley the same thing.

Shouldn't the new market on Murray Hill Rd. be opening up soon (if it hasn't already)?

I would love to see the old Corbo's storefront (corner of mayfield and murray hill) turned into a decked-out Italian Deli.

Corbo's never was at the "corner of mayfield and murray hill", was it?  La Dolce Vita has one corner and the other corner is occupied by another restaraunt.  Corbo's was more mid-block, no?

Yes very soon if it isn't already.  I'll be back in town next week and plan on shopping there.

Yes it used to be on the corner in 2007:

They moved to a building they owned in the midblock after the rent on the corner was raised above their comfort zone (supposedly).  Mia Bella restuarant is now in that great building and location.

Are you thinking of the Corbo's restaurant or nightclub?  The bakery was indeed in the corner building (where Mia Bella is now) for quite a while before it moved a few years ago up the hill a few storefronts.

What is your opinion on little italy north of mayfield road? A lot of the housing seems to be cheap and of little or no historical importance. This seems like it could be an area that would be a candidate for a makeover. New streets, sidewalks and houses. With its location being so close to the hospitals and a rapid line, it seems like it could be a very popular place for employees to live. Plus being little italy and having the old restaurants and stuff would help to.

And to clearify, when I say new housing, I dont mean suburban, I mean dense urban housing, like they did over in tremont.  http://tinyurl.com/24rukx6

The housing may be cheaply made, but I doubt that it can be cheaply bought.  It would be very expensive to purchase those homes (relative to just about anywhere else in Cleveland) just to demolish them and build housing of roughly the same density.  It is also doubtful given our limited resources that remaking a fairly functional neighborhood is the best use we could come up with.

^Right.  There is plenty of land to develop.  No need to tear down a functional and successful urban neighborhood.  The parking lot around Coltman 27 is about as big as that little pocket of houses.

Not to mention that if anybody had the idea to assembly the land for a new development by purchasing those admittedly unattractive but functional houses, it would be a negotiating nightmare.  Individual owners who have their own interests and agendas as well as, like mentioned above, an inflated value of what their house is worth.  Only one or two reluctant sellers would kill any possible project.  Such development would be cost prohibitive.
