Exactly, it also adds some cool “mountain” feel to an area that has nothing like that. There is an area in northwest/north central Ohio where they turned a quarry into basically a lake that has crystal clear water. I would love for them to do something like that down here.
September 24, 20231 yr There are so many quarries on the South Side. I hope long-term plans would push something like this as well.

October 24, 20231 yr RAPID 5 Starts Search for New Leader, Establishes Land Trust RAPID 5, the parks and greenways initiative established as a nonprofit organization in 2022, made several announcements today that help paint a picture of what the group’s next chapter might look like. A search for a new executive director will be launched this month, according to a press release. Last May, about a year after her hiring, it was announced that Amy Acton was out as leader of the organization, leaving RAPID 5 to operate as a board-led group without paid staff since that time. Acton, who led the state’s response to the pandemic as the director of the Ohio Department of Health, helped to establish RAPID 5 as a nonprofit, oversaw the selection of a 16-member Board of Directors, and brought in about $3 million in funding commitments, according to William Murdock, Executive Director of the Mid-Ohio Planning Commission (MORPC). October 24, 20231 yr Columbus waterway-focused nonprofit Rapid 5 starting search to replace Amy Acton Columbus nonprofit Rapid 5 is working to find a new executive director, nearly half a year after former Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton's brief tenure with the organization ended. Acton, a household name following her regular presses conferences during the Covid-19 pandemic, left the nonprofit in May after just a year leading the organization. The board has been running the organization in the months since. The move to find a new director comes as the nonprofit is taking another step forward by establishing a land trust. Construction on the proposed project was originally expected to begin last year at the park, but supply issues and rising costs forced a delay in those plans. "We'll break ground in the next month or so," Moloney said. "We’re working with the contractor to have an opening in September, to coincide with the fall colors." Blacklick Woods, located at 6975 E. Livingston Ave., has more than 640 acres of woods, seasonal swamp ponds, prairie and fields plus a golf course. The planned project will still have a 55-foot observation tower and deck, so the proposed 500-foot canopy walk will be accessible to all. But the plan also now includes a hammock-style rope structure, and a rope swing bridge with planks that also will be handicapped accessible. In addition, the proposed canopy walk will have a fort for kids to play in and and a covered rest stop." February 26, 20241 yr "Work on the new Great Southern Metro Park and the Scioto Trail extension continues as Metro Parks officials work on state legislators for $10 million to help build the park. Ohio House representatives did not include the $10 million for the park in the state's $700 million package, dubbed the "Super Duper Fund," for local projects when they voted 75-19 on Feb. 7 for how $350 million of that fund would be spent. The Ohio Senate has yet to vote on its $350 million share. Tim Moloney, Metro Parks executive director, said if the park system doesn't receive that money from the state, it will take longer to complete the new park, which along with an extension of the Scioto Trail will cost $20 million. Great Southern Metro Park will sit between the Scioto River and the Great Southern Shopping Center on the city's Far South Side. It will include the former Heer Park site. Part of the park could open late this year, Moloney said. Crews continue to clean up the site, but other than a bathroom building, and some cleared dirt, little has been done on the northern part of the Great Southern park area near West Williams Road." https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2024/02/26/great-southern-metro-park-presses-ahead-as-area-growth-concerns-rise/72660943007/
March 1, 20241 yr New Metro Park Canopy Walk to Open This Spring If you’ve taken advantage of one of our recent warm winter days to take a walk on the Buttonbrush Trail at Blacklick Woods Metro Park, you’ve probably noticed a significant construction project underway. Crews have been busy building an accessible canopy walk that will allow visitors to experience the park’s mature beech-maple forest in a new and unique way. Think of it as a boardwalk trail that happens to be raised up a little higher off the ground – about 35 feet, to be exact. An observation platform will allow visitors to get even higher – it will sit about 50 feet up – and other features will offer more hands-on experiences, like a cargo net, a fire pole, a playhouse and a rope bridge. It will be a traditional metro park with trails, play areas and picnic areas, and an existing wetland to the south. There also will be river access for canoes and kayaks. The park will also include a four-mile extension of the Scioto Trail south from the Scioto Audubon Metro Park, which will cost approximately $11 million. According to Snyder, the trail would provide access to 70,000 Far South Side residents and 1.2 million trail users. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission awarded $7.98 million in federal funds to Metro Parks to build a bridge over state Route 104 and connections to the Scioto Trail, which represents about 72% of the trail extension’s total cost." https://www.dispatch.com/
April 2, 20241 yr Small update on Bank Run: Bank Run Metro Park construction in the works "Construction is ongoing for the new Bank Run Metro Park at the former Hoover YMCA property off Rohr Road on Columbus’ Southeast Side. Named after the type of rock that’s found on the quarry on the property, it’s a type of gravel used as the foundation for many construction projects. The park will have a dedicated 5K track, something that Snyder said a lot of people have been asking for the park system to provide. Snyder said that Metro Parks hopes to open the park by later this year or early next year. According to Snyder, the cost to build up the park will be approximately $1.3 million, and that doesn’t include the money that was already spent on purchasing the property and the surrounding area from the YMCA in 2020. Metro Parks also purchased a rock quarry, where there will be different water activities for park visitors." https://www.dispatch.com/
