The former Subway at 1576 W. Fifth Ave. is being converted into a new location for the popular coffee-and-doughnuts chain. It is expected to open in June.

Aab Bexley Under New Ownership as Khaab Indian Kitchen & Bar

Under new ownership, Aab India in Bexley has undergone a transformation. The restaurant at 2400 E. Main St. is now known as Khaab Indian Kitchen & Bar.

Owner Dalbir Mavi is hoping to make the transition an easy, and welcome, one for Bexley diners. Khaab will keep Aab’s menu, but refocus on the quality of its North Indian cuisine.

“I know people love the current menu and flavors,” Mavi says. “We are keeping the base menu the same and will continue to work hard to improve the quality of the food without changing the original recipes.”

Budd Dairy Food Hall Sets Opening Date

April 6 is the big day for Budd Dairy Food Hall, which will officially open its doors at 1086 N. Fourth St. in Italian Village after months of COVID-19-related delays.

Budd Dairy Food Hall has been just over three years in the making. The chef-driven food hall concept from Cameron Mitchell Restaurants was initially announced in January of 2018. Nine food vendors were selected throughout 2019, with the space slated to make its debut in early 2020. By late last year, Budd Dairy officially announced its opening had been delayed to 2021, and it would be looking for a new chef partner to replace a previously announced tenant. Last week, it was revealed that fried chicken concept Cluck Norris would take the place of Darista.

“We are so grateful for our raving fans who share our excitement for the new Budd Dairy Food Hall and who have been anxiously awaiting its opening,” said General Manager Jeremy Hughes. “We look forward to welcoming guests soon, giving them a safe place to connect with others while enjoying tasty culinary creations from our talented group of chef partners.”

Torchy's Tacos coming to Columbus, starting with a ghost kitchen

A fast-growing Texas taco chain is planning an expansion to Columbus using a ghost kitchen to establish itself in the market.

We already knew Torchy's Tacos was planning to expand after raising $400 million of fresh funding in November. Now we know more about where they are headed.

The Austin-based chain plans to enter Arizona and Florida in 2022, CEO G.J. Hart said in an interview this month. That's on top of the company's plan to expand in North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee in 2021.

New Short North-area restaurant: Z Cucina chef opening his own place

A new locally owned restaurant is coming to the Short North-Italian Village area this spring.

Chef Jamie George, most recently of Z Cucina near Grandview Heights, and partners Eric Bearfield and Jackie Williams are opening ‘Plas Food and Drink in early April at 21 E. 5th Ave.

That space had been The Table, which was one of the Covid-19 restaurant casualties of the past year.

“The vision we are going with is a modern approach to my experience with old world cuisine and technique, presented in a casual fine dining atmosphere with particular attention to detail,” George said in an email. “Everything we do is carefully sourced and mindful of sustainability, working closely with our local community to the detail of designating plots on local farms for our own specialty produce.”

Happy Little Treats Finds a New Home in the Short North

Vegan bakery Happy Little Treats may have moved a mere 350 feet south in the Short North, but the new address opens up a world of possibilities for the operation.

Happy Little Treats is now open at 1203 N. High St., the former home of the Short North Coffee House.

An expiring lease and a need for more space put Happy Little Treats on the move, says Owner Erin Hall.

“The new shop is at least four times larger than the old space which gives us much more space to produce and a much larger customer area as well,” Hall says.

The Pastry Factory Scores a Permanent Spot at North Market

The North Market Downtown, 59 Spruce St., is getting a sweet new addition.

After participating in the North Market Farmers’ Market and and indoor pop-ups, The Pastry Factory is making things permanent with its own stall.

Owner Allyson Blackwell launched The Pastry Factory in 2012 as a part-time, home-based business. With lifetime love of baking and a culinary arts degree from Sullivan University, Blackwell also has extensive industry experience both in and outside of the kitchen, with positions spanning sous chef, pastry chef and head baker to restaurant manager.

The pandemic provided the push Blackwell needed to pursue The Pastry Factory full-time after her previous position as a cafe manager was eliminated during the shutdown.

Short Order: Wario’s Beef & Pork

The skies turned black when Sandman’s Cheesesteak abandoned the Arena District a year ago. An absence of walk-up cheesesteak sandwiches creates a void in the universe, and a giant hole in the stomach. That hole is emptiness.

And then, the resurrection. Word broke that Wario’s Beef & Pork set up a walk-up operation in the same spot. And it has cheesesteak. As in cheesesteak is the centerpiece of the menu. Literally, the option is in the center at the top of the menu. Also, probably figuratively, as the extra-cheesy version carries the Wario name.

First Look: S’wich Social

The premise is pretty simple: choose cookies, choose ice cream, choose toppings and devour. But the flavors are anything but.

Build-your-own ice cream sandwich shop S’wich Social is set to make its Italian Village debut on St. Patrick’s Day – Wednesday, March 17. (There may not be green beer, but there is green ice cream!)

Friends and Co-Owners Sean Whited and Addison Brown are scooping ice cream from the Chocolate Shoppe in Madison, WI and smashing it between massive, house-made cookies baked fresh daily.

That’s the S’wich – two cookies and a scoop of ice cream. Guests can also enjoy their sugar fix in Sundae form – one cookie, one scoop, or Split form (split as in share with another person(s)) – three scoops, three cookies. Those interested in just one or the other can also order one or two scoops of ice cream, or cookies in increments of one, six or 12.

Plas Food & Drink Taking Over Former Home of The Table

Local Chef Jamie George is branching out on his own. George will bring three decades plus of industry experience, the last nine of which he spent at Z Cucina, to Plas Food & Drink.

With partners Eric Bearfield and Jackie Williams, Plas will open at 21 E. Fifth Ave. in Short North, the former home of The Table which closed and went up for sale last May.

The restaurant’s name is a play on a popular industry phrase “mise en place,” or everything in its place. For George, everything finally fell into place to bring his own vision to life. He says taking the leap has been a long time coming and it was just time for him personally, as a chef.

Cheesecake Girl Lands Spot at Budd Dairy & Storefront in Dublin

Soon there will be not one, not two, but three locations where fans can get their fill of The Cheesecake Girl.

One year after Owner Samantha Strange opened The Cheesecake Girl’s first brick-and-mortar at Hilliard’s Center Street Market, the bakery will join Budd Dairy Food Hall in Italian Village.

The Cheesecake Girl will occupy Budd Dairy’s Hatch space, an incubation kitchen that will welcome new tenants on a rotating basis. The bakery will be the first vendor in the space and set up shop for three months when the long-awaited project opens on April 6.

The dessert maker will offer a smaller, albeit just as tasty selection, compared to its Center Street location.

“We’re planning to have slices, mini cheesecakes, trifle jars and cookie sandwiches,” Strange says.

Agapé Mediterranean Opens First Location in Westerville, Second Already on Deck

Agapé is putting a Mediterranean spin on the fast-casual, build-your-own concept.

Four friends and business partners have come together to open Agapé Mediterranean’s first location at 405 Polaris Pkwy. in Westerville, with plans already in the works to make it a multi-unit concept.

Each partner brings a unique set of skills and experience to the operation, setting the team up for its planned rapid growth.

Agapé’s design started with friends Johnny Baransi and Matt Morrison. Baransi has successfully started and sold a number of still-open Mediterranean restaurants around town, giving Agapé its head chef and recipe maker.

Morrison had experience with franchises, owning a number of Wingstop and Subway locations. Brandon Wright, who now handles operations for the restaurant, also had experience in the franchise realm. Rounding out the team is Mason Estep, bringing business building experience in the beverage and restaurant tech industries.

i didnt know the halal guys had a freakin brick and mortar franchise, lol, that is a cart in midtown.

but its a good and long standing one, so definitely worth a try!

and speaking of franchises and taco johns, i have heard of them, but never been to one. is that the kind of place where they put pickles in your tacos? not that i dont like pickles, i do, but i have noticed that is an annoying surprise to find in your tacos lately -- it seems to be some kind of trend in tacos in gringo restaurants.

Or fast food in general. When places started making the fish in their fish sandwiches smaller they added pickles. Same with some chicken sandwiches. So I just assume when they add pickles to something now they took something more important away.

Mikey’s Late Night Slice Partners with Casino on New Location

LNS will replace the space currently occupied by IO Bar, and be available at The OH! Sports Bar and the casino’s cafe. At its fully-branded location, casino-goers will find a menu similar to LNS’ other spots (plus cocktails and draft beer), while the other locations will be slinging slices.

Běndì Wok N’ Bar Now Open in German Village

Běndì Wok N’ Bar is bringing Asian eats back to German Village. The new Asian-fusion restaurant opened its doors at 277 E. Livingston Ave. in early March.

The address is the former home of Happy Dragon, and was previously attached to a Philco expansion project that never panned out, before being taken over by the Local Cantina restaurant group.

The group took ownership of the space along with Short North staple The Rossi in fall of 2019, and has been working to bring the concept to life ever since.

According to Běndì Wok General Manager Mike Hamer, the restaurant fills a gap for neighborhood diners.

When the restaurant group opened Jonys Sushi at 195 Thurman Ave. in German Village in late 2019, local operations manager Leanna McKenney-Heath says the concept saw huge success because there really wasn’t anywhere else to get sushi in the area.

“We always look at the neighborhood and what there is a lack of when it comes to opening a new restaurant,” she says.

When All People Arts expressed interest in including a coffee shop in their space, they reached out to Third Way.

First Look: Freedom a la Cart Café + Bakery

Freedom a la Cart celebrates the grand opening of its first café and bakery today, Monday April 5.

The nonprofit catering company that works with survivors of human trafficking initially shared plans in late 2019 to expand with their own cafe Downtown. After months of COVID-related delays, CEO Paula Haines says finally opening the space is a dream come true.

The Downtown address at 123 E. Spring St. checked a number of boxes for Freedom a la Cart. When trying to decide where to relocate, the organization did a location analysis and found that Downtown best fit the bill when it came to accomplishing three major goals: serving survivors of sex trafficking, being a centralized location for a catering operation, and having foot traffic and customers at the ready for breakfast and lunch.

Official opening of Ray Ray's Meat + Three is tomorrow, but they are having a "local preview" today. Got takeout for lunch since we've been smelling it for weeks, which has been torture. Not only was the meat probably the best BBQ either of us has had, but the sides (and the peach butterscotch cobbler) were equally as good. It was really obvious how much thought and skill went into pretty much everything.

We finally have a restaurant in Granville thats truly worth bragging about.

A new local Mediterranean restaurant already is prepping its second unit.

Agapé Mediterranean expects to open at 5010 N. Hamilton Road in Gahanna in May.

The startup fast-casual brand opened its first restaurant in January at 405 Polaris Parkway. Mason Estep, who leads business development for Agapé, said the initial few months of business have gone well at the first restaurant.

First Look: Ray Ray’s Meat + Three

From its first food truck in 2009, Ray Ray’s has expanded to five locations serving barbecue to nearly every corner of Central Ohio. But location number five holds a special distinction – it’s Owner James Anderson’s first sit-down, brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Ray Ray’s Meat + Three officially opens its doors at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7 at 1256 Columbus Rd. in Granville. The address puts the restaurant mere miles from Anderson Farms, which raises the hogs for Meat + Three.

Fans of the food truck will find something new at the restaurant. With the meat and three concept, diners select one meat and team it up with a trio of sides. That’s not all that’s on the menu, though. The restaurant also serves up sandwiches, and no barbecue joint would be complete without ribs, which are full spare in Granville. Some southern sweets have also made their way to the menu, including churros with salted caramel, Reese’s pie and peach butterscotch cobbler.

DiCarlo’s Pizza Opens in Italian Village

In case you haven’t heard, DiCarlo’s Pizza uses provolone cheese. Period.

The second Central Ohio location of DiCarlo’s and its cheese can now be found in Italian Village, with a takeout and delivery-only joint at 91 E. Fifth Ave.

The family-run business, which has been slinging pies since 1945, is well-known for a particular kind of pizza. Some might refer to it as Ohio Valley or Steubenville style, but, “We like to say it’s DiCarlo’s pizza because every iteration or offshoot of this style pizza usually came from DiCarlo’s kitchen or our pizza,” says David DiCarlo, part of the third generation to be involved in the business. (Curious about those offshoots? There’s a list on their website.)
