Hot Chicken Takeover is ready to open its newest Central Ohio restaurant.

The Columbus-founded brand will open its new location at 8715 Owenfield Drive in Lewis Center Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

With Joya’s Open, Chef Avishar Barua Working on Next Restaurant

When Chef Avishar Barua came back to Columbus after his adventures on Top Chef Portland, the stage was set for him to do his own thing. Twice over. Barua has a lofty goal – open two restaurants in a year (less, actually) span.

Up first is Bengali-American cafe Joya’s, named after his mother.

“She can no longer be embarrassed about me choosing cooking as my career because her name is on the window,” says Barua with a laugh.

Taking over the former home of Sassafras Bakery at 657 High St. in Worthington, the inspiration for the eatery started not with the food, but with the coffee. With a number of great roasters in town already, Barua says he’s injecting some of his memories and personality into Joya’s drink menu, tapping into coffee and tea cultures from around the world.

Cut 132 at Easton could just be the start of restaurant group's Columbus expansion

Basil to reopen in Upper Arlington as Clintonville's Buddha Bowl closes

Thrive Cos. coffee shop/bar concept to open in December

Thrive Cos. will open a new coffee shop and bar in its Jeffrey Park development Friday.

Bada Bean Bada Booze, or Bada for short, will be a coffee shop by day and transition to a bar at night. Columbus Business First got an exclusive first look inside the new space, located at 231 E. 1st. Ave.

"We hope this is just a great little neighborhood bar where people stop before going to the Short North or 4th Street, or after they've gone out," said Courtney Ingersoll, director of marketing for Thrive Cos. "This will be an amenity for residents, obviously, but we hope everyone in the neighborhood enjoys having another coffee spot and bar."

The space Bada is now in was formerly a community room for Jeffrey Park residents. Ingersoll called Bada a "reimagined" concept of the community room, where coffee, drinks, coworking and socializing can happen.

Coffee Shop & Bar Bada Bean Bada Booze Opens in Italian Village

Offering coffee by day, booze by night, Bada Bean Bada Booze is now open at 231 E. First Ave. in Italian Village.

The coffee shop slash bar is a new vertical for developer Thrive Companies, and just the first of a planned four locations in Central Ohio.

It’s an idea a few years in the making. CEO Kevin Zeppernick says about five years ago as the company started rebranding from Wagenbrenner Development, they started incorporating new facets of business.

“We really pushed hard into an experience division,” Zeppernick says. “A lot of it was born out of the thought that we have such large sites with scale that for us to really execute the way we wanted, to execute and to serve not only our residents but the neighborhood, we thought we should internalize at least some of the core elements that our residents are looking for.”

Ugh, a handful of restaurant closures announced in the past week:

- Nida’s Thai on High in the Short North. Their North Market stall will remain open.

High St. Kitchens to open in Clintonville next month

Columbus is getting another ghost kitchen, but this one is more than just a delivery hub.

Many such operations, from Clustertruck downtown to CloudKitchens’ Columbus operation to Kitchen United’s three Mix Food Halls inside Kroger stores, focus on carryout and delivery. But that’s expected to be just 30% of the business at High St. Kitchens, which plans to open in Clintonville next month.

“Seventy percent of our business is whoever needs a commercial kitchen space,” said Bennett Goldberg, partner in Los Angeles-based operator Maker Kitchens Group. “Cookies, brownies, potato chips, caterers, even food technology — we have a 3D printing candy company in one of our locations.”

New Steakhouse Opening at Easton Next Year

A new steakhouse will open at Easton Town Center in early 2023. Virginia-based Thompson Hospitality will introduce itself to the Columbus market with Cut 132, occupying the ground floor of the Aloft Hotel at 4188 Brighton Rose Way.

Cut 132 will replace wood panel walls, white table cloths and stuffy formality with a lighter, brighter, more contemporary environment across its 7,500 square feet. Katigbak says they aim to create an experience-oriented restaurant; a place to see and be seen.

Slammers to open new restaurant and bar in University District

“Slammers is set to open a location on campus next month.

The Slammers offshoot, Slammie's on High, will be located in the University District at 1607 N. High St., the former home of Aracri Pizzeria, which closed last month.

The co-owners are Slammers managing partner Carson Nethers, assistant general manager and liquor manager Matthew Johns and Ryan Skehan. Johns will oversee the food and drink programs, while Skehan will serve as a managing partner at Slammie's.

Nethers said they were looking to expand Slammers, and the opportunity to open a location on campus was presented. He said Aracri Pizzeria owner Palmo Aracri, who opened Aracri Pizzeria on Gay Downtown early this year, was looking to get out of the N. High Street location.“

Another super disappointing addition to the neighborhood. A Five Guys will be taking up some of the space at the former Chase Bank site at 3655 N. High right next to the Sbarro that nobody ever goes to. This coupled with the addition of a Dunkins/Baskin Robbins hybrid further south on High all add up to round out an incredibly disappointing year of development in the Clintonville neighborhood.

I don't understand why the commission is wasting time approving nonsense like this and ignoring real issues and developments that could actually improve the area. These are the type of businesses that belong in a strip mall on Bethel or Morse, not on High in Clintonville.

https://614now.com/2022/food-drink/national-burger-chain-planning-first-clintonville-location

I get being disappointed in Clintonville, but this isn't really a new development it's just taking over the former bank space

Also that retail building, while single story, is nicely detailed, built to the street with ample patio space, and was a huge improvement over the Clark gas station formerly on the site

You just beat me too it. I too wouldn't count this as development news or a disappointment. In fact, I think it's great that Clintonville is shedding some bank spaces even if it means a national chain. A restaurant does more to enhance community walkability than a bank.

Just kind of goes with the Columbus forums tendency to throw everything into the D&Ns threads and ignore the restaurants, business, roads and highways, etc threads.

And I have a guilty pleasure of using the sbarro drive through more than I should 🙈

Even more restaurant news for Clintonville. This would def be an improvement to the building exterior:

“The owner of the professional building at 3400 N. High St. is seeking variances to allow for the construction of a first‐floor restaurant and exterior patio in the existing 4‐story office structure.

Steve Hutchinson, owner of Broker One Realty Inc., said he is in the process of building a 4,700-square-foot space with an additional 1,100-square-foot patio that has heating elements, making it useable for about eight months out of the year.

The Clintonville Area Commission on Dec. 1 recommended approval of the variance. The Columbus Board of Zoning Adjustment would have the final say.

Love it! Would love if they got rid of the parking lot even more. Small steps though haha

I wondered what they were doing there. Gonna be one of the best patios in the city overlooking 5 lanes of traffic in each direction plus parking lanes. A top spot for suburban car enthusiasts. 😅

Hmm, I don’t remember that one! It’s been posted on here, though, that Bojangle’s first Cbus area location will be opening on Hilliard-Rome soon!

I thought I saw it on here but couldn't find it either.

Speck posted their job openings last month so hopefully that means they feel confident in an imminent delivery of equipment and opening.

I hope so! I’ve been wanting to check it out since its move from Delaware was announced.

Maple Street Biscuit Co. doesn't plan to stop with one Columbus site

Maple Street Biscuit Co.’s Columbus aspirations go beyond its new restaurant opening in January.

“We didn’t come here just to build one,” CEO John Maguire said. “I look out at Columbus and I see six to 10 great trade areas that could support us.”

The restaurant opening at 1310 Polaris Parkway on Jan. 5 will be the Nashville-based brand’s first restaurant in Ohio and its 56th overall.

Maguire said Ohio was a natural next destination for the brand, which already has several units in Kentucky. He said Columbus stood out as a launching point for several factors, including that it’s still growing and has strong demographics, particularly with young people and young families.

This is kinda surprising to me:

White Castle closing its Short North restaurant this weekend

‘“It’s been a great run,” said Jamie Richardson, White Castle's vice president of marketing and public relations. “We still think that site has tremendous potential, but we think the space can be put to better use.”

White Castle has an ownership stake in the development alongside Borror, which developed the property and is one of the building’s other tenants.

Richardson said that location has not recovered sales-wise since Covid-19 and staffing and scheduling has been a struggle in the past few years.

The Short North’s loss on that front will be a gain for other White Castle locations as all workers are being sent to other Central Ohio restaurants including eight who will move to the restaurant at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson roads, which will allow that unit to go back to 24-hour service.”

North Market update: Saddleberk closes, Preston's moving to Clintonville

The North Market Downtown will be down two tenants by year end.

The Saddleberk butcher shop last week closed its stall in the market. It continues to operate the butcher shop at North Market Bridge Park.

...

Meanwhile, Preston’s: A Burger Joint is leaving its spot at the downtown market at the end of the year.

Columbus Monthly this week reported that the popular burger destination is relocating to 2973 N. High St., a Clintonville space that previously was Buddha Bowl and prior to that Blunch.

Columbus Monthly put out a list of restaurant casualties over this past year. Lost a few good ones but I can't say I'm too upset about most of these places closing up shop. Boxwood Biscuit Company was probably the biggest hit for me, when they first opened the quality was just excellent but it quickly went to much smaller gravy portions and were not able to get the same quality of chicken by the end of their run.

Chop5 Salad Kitchen expanding in Columbus with new Upper Arlington restaurant

After a few years of testing and learning, a locally based fast-casual chain is ready to grow.

Chop5 Salad Kitchen opened its first restaurant in late 2016 at 2044 Polaris Pkwy. Restaurants in Orlando and in Boulder, Colorado followed, as did the Covid-19 pandemic, which put many restaurant plans on pause.

But Chop5 is anticipating a busy 2023, including expansion around Columbus and the launch of a franchising program.

A new restaurant is under construction now at 1305 W. Lane Ave.
