Another downtown closure.

Longtime Downtown Columbus restaurant Ho-Toy closed after 64 years

“Longtime Downtown Chinese restaurant Ho-Toy has closed after 64 years.

The restaurant, at 11 W. State St., has served wide-ranging classic Chinese and Thai dishes to Columbus residents for over six decades.

Ho-Toy originally opened at 33 E. Town St. in 1959 as one of the city's first Chinese restaurants. In 1980, the restaurant moved to its W. State Street location, an unassuming space in a former Burger King.“

I really hope the push for more residential works. Otherwise, I’m afraid WFH will be the death of Downtown…

The Whitney House in Worthington welcoming customers back with refreshed look, menu

The Whitney House in Worthington closed for two weeks last month, but that didn’t mean the team took a break.

The restaurant at 666 High St. passed eight years of business late last year. Ownership marked the occasion with a refresh of both the space and the menu.

“This was not a vacation,” General Manager Janelle Gearing said. “That first week everyone was in here cleaning and organizing. We were working up until the last minutes.”

Drag Queen Mac & Cheese Food Truck Now Serving Across Ohio

There’s a mac and cheese food truck in Ohio called “Maybe Cheese Born With It” and it’s the first ever drag queen food truck in the entire Midwest.

Honestly, that sentence could be a wholly satisfying tale all on its own.

But with an origin story of Dolly Parton fandom, entrepreneurial spirit and buckets of glitter, owner Sugar Vermonte is determined to bring out the authenticity in every patron covered in her melted cheese.

First Look: Speck Brings Italian to the Heart of Downtown

Chef and Owner Josh Dalton has brought another restaurant to the heart of Downtown Columbus.

The much-anticipated Speck Italian Eatery opened its doors last week at 89 N. High St., inside The Nicholas.

It’s the second Delaware to Downtown transplant for Dalton, joining nearby Veritas.

“My intention with Speck is to offer a modern interpretation of Italian cuisine in a vibrant and eclectic setting,” Dalton said. “We’re finally here and couldn’t be more excited. We hope you’re ready for us, Columbus.”

Slammies on High to bring pizza, welcoming atmosphere to Gateway

A longstanding downtown LGBTQ bar and pizza joint is expanding to Ohio State.

Slammies on High expects to open this month at 1607 N. High St. at Gateway University District. It’s taking both the historic openness and the pizza of downtown Columbus’ Slammers to the new addition.

“We attend OSU and we didn’t feel there was an LGBTQ bar for us when we were here,” co-owner Ryan Skehan said. “We had to go down to the Short North. So we wanted to create a welcoming space closer to students where they can be themselves.”

Preston’s: A Burger Joint is back. The scent of burgers (and more) is now wafting from 2973 N. High St. in Clintonville.

As they introduce themselves to the neighborhood, Preston’s is kicking things off with their North Market menu. That means their lineup of popular burgers, like the Classic, Mushroom & Swiss or Spicy Boi (that according to you, CU readers, are some of the Best in Columbus), and fried chicken in nugget, tender, wing or sandwich form.

“After seven years of perfecting their roasting operations, local coffee company Jennings Java is ready to make the leap into brick and mortar retail with the opening of their first cafe location in Merion Village this summer.

The new shop is slated to open less than a mile away at 116 East Moler Street. The site was formerly occupied by Bake Me Happy, which relocated to Whittier Street last year.

“We’ll have a bodega-style step with around 15 to 20 different coffee origins, some unique options for home brewing, equipment for sale, milks and our canned cold brews,” he stated. “In the future we might expand to offering beer and wine.”

The new cafe is slated for an opening sometime this summer. Jennings stated that while the cafe itself requires few renovations or updates, the relocation of their roasting equipment has some installation and permitting processes that will take some time to complete.”

Newest Harvest restaurant now open in Granville

Walked the block or so down there for an early dinner on Saturday, it was outstanding. They did a really nice job converting what was a dance studio into something really nice inside.

Along with (also Grow-owned, primarily breakfast/lunch) Station right across the street, this already busy area of Granville is becoming a small hub for restaurants. Despite being outside the core of downtown it still entirely walkable for most of the village (including from downtown) and Denison. Along with the fact both of these places are really good, the location and critical mass will hopefully help keep these top-of-mind and consistently busy. Plenty of additional opportunity for new businesses (hopefully more restaurants) along South Main - the badly-space-constrained vet's office and pet store have moved to River Road, Denison is trying to figure our what to do with the soon-to-be-decommissioned steam plant, and vacant lots between Raccoon Creek and the highway.

Ray Ray's on Columbus Rd, despite only being a bit further, is not walkable from the village and is the only business in the area. Even though the food is good, they unfortunately seem to be struggling. When we go out for dinner in town it's always something we can walk to, so Ray Ray's isn't even a consideration.

Apparently there was more vendor space 🤷🏼‍♂️

“You can now get a little slice of New Orleans in Columbus' Arena District.

Creole 2 Geaux opened its brick-and-mortar location at 401 N. Front St. on Feb. 28.

Janvier and Sharif Ward's New Orleans-inspired eatery—which serves shrimp and chicken po'boys, creole bowls, jambalaya and more —debuted as a food truck in 2015 and at East Market in 2022. This is the restaurant's first standalone location.

Janvier said the Arena District location would be the restaurant's home base, with many of its most popular dishes moving to the new location.“

Burger joint The Rail has opened its second location in Central Ohio.

Setting up shop at 1064 Dublin Rd., the 5,505 square-foot restaurant is one of the first things to open as part of Thrive Companies’ 55-acre, mixed-use Grandview Crossing development.

“We are very excited to be on the frontend of the openings within the development so that we can serve the residents that are living there, as well as guests from near and far,” says Megan Rodenhauser, chief marketing officer for Mike Mariola Restaurants, which owns The Rail.

Five years ago, the restaurant group expanded to Central Ohio with the opening of The Rail in Dublin.

The undulating roof of the convention center really is quite impressive from above. I'm glad we're getting more vantage points where that's visible

Fast-growing OX-B's opening its sixth restaurant in less than three years

OX-B’s may not serve hot chicken, but the chicken chain is pretty hot right now.

The local chicken chain opened its first location in April 2020. It’ll open its sixth this week at 2521 W. Schrock Road in Westerville.

In a market with plenty of chicken choices, including Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane’s, Wingstop, Hot Chicken Takeover and Dave’s Hot Chicken (all of which are expanding), OX-B’s sees room for its take and then some.

Owner Joe Holbrook said the brand was conceived to grow.

Second local Bojangles planned for Hebron:

Bojangles shares tentative opening date for first-ever Columbus restaurant, plus the location of its second eatery

“According to Bojangles Senior Director of Communications Stacey McCray, the chain’s first Columbus location is slated to open on or near May 23. While McCray noted this date has not been finalized, it gives us a better idea of when we can expect the anticipated spot to open its first local store.

According to documents filed with the city of Hebron, a new Bojangles restaurant is currently being planned for 853 South 30th St. in Hebron. McCray told 614Now that this location is slated to break ground soon, with a goal of opening later this year.“

I'm assuming the article means Heath, which would put it where (RIP) Toys R Us used to be/Big Lots is now.

I don't think there are 30 streets in Hebron :)

That always happens.

Cameron Mitchell Has 4 New Restaurants in the Works

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants is continuing to expand its footprint across Central Ohio.

Downtown and Easton will each get a CMR concept, with limited details available on what exactly those restaurants will be, or when they will open.

“We are working on a new steakhouse in downtown Columbus and on a new concept for Easton Town Center,” a statement from CMR said. “We are still working on naming both concepts.”

The Downtown steakhouse is slated for the PNC Plaza. Work is already underway on the 24-story tower at 155 E. Broad St., which will convert the building to a mix of apartments and office space. The design for the building’s sunken plaza was recently in front of the Downtown commission again, receiving approval for a new glass-enclosed structure that would hold a restaurant space. It is not clear if the steakhouse would occupy this space, or one of the restaurant spaces included in the initial design.
