Wave of New Vendors Heading for East Market

Changes are afoot at the Trolley District’s East Market, 212 Kelton Ave., as a pop-up becomes permanent, another vendor expands, three newcomers join the fold and one vendor departs.

The whirlwind of activity will fill some gaps in the Market’s offerings, including bar-friendly fare like burgers and wings, and more fresh options like salads.

Room for some of the new vendors was created by the recent departure of the Butcher & Grocer. One of the original tenants of the Market, the Butcher & Grocer’s space included a prepared foods concept, as well as a butcher shop, green grocer, bottle shop, fishmonger and cheese shop.

Bojangles opens its first Columbus-area restaurant near Hilliard

Columbus’ first Bojangles is now open.

It’s the first local restaurant for the North Carolina-based chain. But it won’t be the last. A second location already is lined up at 853 S. 30th St. in Heath.

Franchisee Jeff Rigsby has been working for years to bring the North Carolina-based fast food chicken brand to his native Central Ohio. The expansion into the Columbus area first was announced in 2021.

Fox in the Snow Announces Opening Date for Dublin

The countdown is on for Fox in the Snow in Dublin. The cafe opens its doors at 38 W. Bridge St. on Saturday, September 23 at 8 a.m.

It’s the fourth area location for the popular bakery and coffee shop, joining existing cafes in Italian Village, German Village and New Albany.

Actually, the Old Dublin address was almost location number two. Co-Owner Lauren Culley says she and fellow Co-Owner Jeff Excell actually looked at it seven years ago when they were working on location number two. (That honor went to German Village.) Culley says they never thought they’d get it, but when the opportunity came up again last year, it felt too good to be true.

Colin’s Coffee Moving in with The Daily Growler

A “beverage mullet” is certainly one way to describe it. Soon, 2812 Fishinger Rd. will offer coffee during the business end of the day, and beer on the party end, as the recently-displaced Colin’s Coffee moves in with The Daily Growler in Upper Arlington.

The two businesses have been neighbors just across Fishinger for over a decade. The Daily Growler opened its first location in Upper Arlington in December of 2012. It was about that time The Daily Growler Owner John Blakely came over to Colin’s Coffee to introduce himself.

First Look: Matcha-Focused Cafe Opens in Olde Towne East

700 Bryden, a vibrant artist and small business community on the west end of Olde Towne East, now boasts a new tenant serving up beverages with a side of community-building. DADA Matcha Bar, a matcha shop and made-to-order sandwich counter, recently took up residence in the vestibule of 700 Bryden, a space brimming with carved-out offices and studios. DADA offers a unique blend of culinary creativity and community spirit. In a conversation with Joel McPeak, the owner of DADA and Honey Cup, we delved into the genesis of DADA, the intricacies of matcha, and the collaborative essence of 700 Bryden.

DADA’s journey began in July when the organizers at 700 Bryden reached out to McPeak, setting in motion a remarkable transformation. With limited space (DADA is essentially tucked against one wall of a vestibule marked by a set of doors leading to the street and a set of doors leading to the main hallway of 700 Bryden), McPeak and his team embraced the challenge, crafting seasonal delights and farm-to-table offerings that perfectly complement their beverage program. This pursuit of culinary creativity is deeply rooted in the collaborative ethos of 700 Bryden, a hub dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurs and artists.

Adelaide's Gin Joint opening soon in Old North Columbus

The newest addition to Old North Columbus wants to win over customers with food, drinks and music.

Adelaide’s Gin Joint will open Monday at 2333 N. High St.

Co-owner Rodrick Pauley said it’s a “modern, prohibition-inspired” space where customers will be able to enjoy not just good food and drinks, but also jazz.

Pauley, a classically trained trumpet player who went to college on a music scholarship, said music has been important both to him and his stepson. When he and his wife and business partner Laura Justice began conceiving a venture, music needed to be at the heart of it.

Focaccieria, Gelateria with Italian Market Headed for Short North

The couple behind Pelino’s Pasta are bringing a little more Italy to Columbus. Vinny and Christina Pelino will expand their empire to open Piazza Pelino at 772 N. High St.

As residents of the Short North, Vinny and Christina saw the need for a neighborhood gathering place – the literal meaning of piazza. Christina says the piazza was one of a few ideas they had been kicking around, but they were just waiting for the right space. The former home of Piece of Cake was calling – they could literally see it from their house. It provided the perfect opportunity to revitalize an empty store front in the community.

Piazza Pelino will be part eatery, part market. The eatery will have two main focuses: focaccia-based sandwiches and small-batch gelatos. Vinny says Italians love to use the word “artisanal,” but it’s really the best way to describe the experience.

Bb.q Chicken adding second Columbus restaurant on Bethel Road

The choices for Korean-style fried chicken continue to grow around Central Ohio.

Multiple franchised concepts as well as some local operators are finding that the Columbus community has taken a liking to that flavorful spin on fried chicken.

Next up will be Bb.q Chicken, opening soon at 878 Bethel Road.

It will be the second location in the market for that brand, which was founded in Seoul, South Korea in 1995 and has grown to more than 3,500 locations worldwide and nearly 170 in the U.S.

It'll make a killing off OSU parents.

Parents? College? Hmmmm. From my experience, Capital Grilles are appealing to a bit of a different crowd these days.... Lots of way-tight dresses and mirror/wine room selfies - and necessitating a large dress code sign outside the front door.

Meh, it's across the street from OSU.  It'll be upper-class parents and their "buddies" drinking wine and ordering overpriced ribeyes.  But that crowd you're describing will be there too.

Two of the world’s top 50 vegan restaurants are right here in Cbus, according to this list

We officially have two of the best eateries in the world, according to an exclusive list compiled by the vegan + sustainability platform, abillion.

Congratulations to Seitans Realm who recently ranked 3rd on abillion’s list of “Top 50 Restaurants Worldwide”, and also to Pattycake Bakery, who ranked #38 out of 50.

Only six restaurants in the United States were awarded, two of them being in Columbus, so this is a huge deal. “Our members reviewed over 265,000 dishes across 70 countries this year, uncovering some of the best spots to dine at. Whether you’re looking for quick bites or full-course meals, these Top 50 restaurants are sure to deliver,” says their website.

Five Guys adds one new location, working on another in Clintonville

Chick-fil-A isn’t the only popular restaurant chain with multiple Central Ohio expansions in the works.

Alexandria-based Five Guys, which arrived in the Columbus market in 2009, is building toward 14 locations around Central Ohio.

It hit 13 with the recent opening of the restaurant at 7105 High St. in Worthington. That location is in the Worthington Gateway development.

That new development, which was built on the site of a former Holiday Inn hotel, is becoming a hub for both expanding restaurant brands such as Maple Street Biscuit Co., Lion Cub’s Cookies and Huey Magoo’s chicken and for multiple new office tenants.

Star Kitchen Cafe Revives Vacant Space in Merion Village

After sitting vacant for more than a decade, a restaurant space on South High Street has found new life.

Star Kitchen Cafe is now open in Merion Village at 1471 S. High St.

Formerly a KFC, the restaurant is now a local operation from Gary Staravecka, owner of Gahanna Grill, and GM and Operating Partner Armand Sollaku. Staravecka purchased the property about four years ago, but was unsure what to do with it. Sollaku, a long-standing Gahanna Grill employee, developed the idea for Star Kitchen, becoming a partner in the space and fulfilling what he calls a dream come true.

Sollaku says they saw a need in Merion Village for more restaurants and more people to invest in the area. They spent about two years working on the space, redoing nearly every inch of the restaurant.

Does Columbus run on Dunkin'? Coffee brand continues to expand

Once an afterthought in the Columbus market, Dunkin’ seems to be catching on with Central Ohio coffee consumers.

The Massachusetts-based chain had a single Columbus-area shop two decades ago and some growing pains in the years after.

But with the recent opening of its new Whitehall location at 3646 E. Broad St., the brand is nearing 20 local shops, a figure that has more than doubled in the past two years alone.

Cincinnati-based Gilligan Co. is one of two franchisee in the Columbus market, including the new Whitehall site. Those franchisees collectively have added units near Grandview Heights, in Linworth, Clintonvillle and Westerville, among other sites.

Lancaster adding region's first 7 Brew location

A new coffee, smoothie and assorted other beverages brand is coming to Central Ohio.

Rogers, Arkansas-based 7 Brew will open its first Columbus-area location at 1637 N. Memorial Drive in Lancaster. It is expected to open by the start of 2024.

There are a couple of interesting angles to the business beyond what’s on the menu. The first is that it’s a drive-thru only concept. No inside seating. The second is that it’s a modular building.

The structure was trucked in and placed on site in Lancaster last week.

E Burger is once again turning out vegan fare at 1437 N. High St. in the University District.

Spaghetti Warehouse's new downtown location targeting late November opening

Spaghetti Warehouse expects to open in its new downtown Columbus space on Nov. 30.

The longtime Columbus restaurant has been closed since spring 2022 after a roof collapse at its historic building at 397 W. Broad St. Earlier this year the owners announced plans to relocate to 150 S. High St. at Columbus Commons.

The company is building up to the late November reopening with a series of events.

One of those is its Savor the Memories campaign, which will run through Oct. 31. Fans can submit their memories and stories online to be entered into a drawing. All entrants will receive a complimentary entrée at the restaurant. The big prize is “Lasagna for Life” (one complimentary lasagna or entrée per month), but the restaurant also will be giving out gift cards, admission to a preview dinner and memorabilia.

I'm an unashamed lifelong Spaghetti Warehouse megafan and I'm still very skeptical about this new location...

Afraid they're going to ditch all the antiques and everything unique and special about SW for a generic modern update

Also, while it could be described as decrepit, nothing about HighPoint gives the charm and history of the Broad St building. IMO they really should have looked in the *ahem* Warehouse District, or even the Arena District

Los Potosinos Finds a Permanent Home

Popular food truck Los Potosinos is putting down roots in a neighborhood that has been its home base for many years.

Le Macaron Opening First Location in Columbus

A new spot for French pastries and macarons is coming soon to the Short North. Le Macaron hopes to open by the end of the month at 997 N. High St., the former home of gallery ROY G BIV.

It will be the franchise’s first location in Central Ohio, and third statewide, joining a Le Macaron food truck and a shop in Liberty Township near Cincinnati.

The Florida-based franchise opened its first location in 2009, and has since spanned to 70 throughout the U.S. It’s that established presence that appealed to local franchisees and husband and wife team Macarena Delpiano and Aldo Nunez.
