Spaghetti Warehouse opens Thursday with new look, classic favorites – here's what to expect

The Spaghetti Warehouse hopes its new restaurant both honors its past and sets itself up for the future.

“We worked hard to get this right,” CEO Ron Reynolds said. “The components (customers) love are still here. We’re not trying to take the brand too far in any one direction.”

The public will be able to judge for themselves this week as the historic Columbus restaurant re-opens at 150 S. High St. It will open Nov. 30 for dinner service, with the first lunch hours on Friday.

The eatery relocated from its original site at 397 W. Broad St., a location that had been closed since spring 2022 after part of its roof collapsed.

Reynolds knows the Spaghetti Warehouse has a dedicated and hungry fan base. Its Savor the Memories campaign generated more than 3,500 responses, each of which received an inducement to visit the new restaurant.

East Coast’s Mecha Noodle Bar Opening First Location in Ohio

A restaurant space in Short North is trading sliders for noodles. Mecha Noodle Bar is slated to open in February 2024 at 965 N. High St., the former home of White Castle.

Mecha opened its first location in Fairfield, CT in 2013 and has since expanded with a number of locations along the east coast. The Short North restaurant will be the first in Ohio.

“We’ve embarked on a mission to bridge cultural divides by introducing Asian comfort food to the Western palate,” say Founders and CEOs Tony Pham and Richard Reyes. “Our vision goes beyond mere gastronomy; it’s about creating an immersive dining experience that harmonizes tradition with innovation.”

Get a look at the Spaghetti Warehouse's new 'trolley' and more ahead of opening

It’s “all aboard!” for the Spaghetti Warehouse. The historic Columbus restaurant reopens Thursday in its new location at 150 S. High St.

CEO Ron Reynolds talked to Columbus Business First earlier this week about the revamping of the brand, which has been a dining destination for many in the city since 1978.

First Look: Piazza Pelino Brings Taste of Italy to Short North

A little taste of Italy has arrived in the Short North. Piazza Pelino officially opened its doors at 772 N. High St. on Wednesday, November 29.

The goal of the aptly-named spot is to transport guests to an Italian piazza – where you’ll normally find a gelateria and easy, portable foods like focaccia sandwiches, says Co-Owner Vinny Pelino who runs the business with his wife, Christina.

It’s their second round of bringing authentic tastes of Italy to Columbus as the couple opened the doors to their restaurant, Pelino’s Pasta in August of 2021.

Well looks like the occupant is Sweetgreen, seems like a letdown, but people seem to request this place all the time, so I’m sure it will do well.

Sweetgreen picks Short North site for first Ohio restaurant

Los Angeles-based Sweetgreen Inc. will open in a 3,700-square-foot Short North space at 700 N. High St. next year.

“This is a long time coming,” co-founder and CEO Jonathan Neman said. “(Columbus) has been a top requested city for us. We constantly hear it. It’s exciting to finally open there.”

The company’s been actively looking in the market for a few years now, but finally committed when it found the ideal site.

“How we enter a market is important to us,” Neman said. “We found an awesome site in the Short North. It’s an arts and cultural center. It’s close to (Ohio State University).”

Okay I freakin love Sweetgreen. I get it’s a chain and that’s disappointing but I’ll take this over Smith and Wolensky’s any day.

Wild that it's their first Ohio location! And yes disappointing that a food-only spot is taking over what was previously a more multi-use venue, but maybe it'll be their first location with a bar? haha

Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to try it. Nothing on their menu stood out to me as something I had to try, so I’ll have to keep looking. In the meantime I’ll just stick to my Roots bowls that I love.

Hot honey chicken plate is 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I am shocked it took so long, seriously sweet green is quiet popular and very much a fit for the SN. Their seasonal menu is really where the magic is.

I think the space would have made more sense for S&W, but I'm certainly not upset with sweetgreen taking it instead

A bit surprised they chose this location, especially for "one of the company’s largest restaurants" as the daytime population of the Short North during the week is still generally pretty low, although the increased focus on office space just before the pandemic helped a decent amount. Maybe sweetgreen can act as more of a destination activity driver of its own, which would be another nice boost to the surrounding neighborhood especially for daytime retail viability

First Look: Iconic Columbus Restaurant Reopens Downtown

An iconic Columbus restaurant is back – and in a new location. Spaghetti Warehouse reopened last week in its new home, 150 S. High St. Downtown.

The space inside the Highpoint on Columbus Commons is a smaller footprint than the previous 800-seat restaurant at 397 W. Broad St. After more than 40 years in the historic building that was once an ice factory, the restaurant temporarily closed in March 2022 when the building’s roof collapsed. The building remains vacant with repairs yet to be made on the roof.

Spaghetti Warehouse describes its new location as a re-imagining for the brand – and in more ways than one.

First Look: Goody Boy Diner is Back in Short North

A new owner is putting the diner back in Short North’s storied Goody Boy Diner.

The history of the restaurant at 1144 N. High St. dates back to 1947, though it’s seen a few openings, closings and name changes over the last several years. Michael’s Goody Boy Diner became Short North Goody Boy in March of 2019, when One Hospitality, formerly Corso Ventures, partnered on the property with previous owner, Jimmy Velio. It would get another refresh from One Hospitality in early 2022, and a new name to go with it, becoming Goody Boy Burger Club. The club moniker was short-lived as the restaurant then closed nine months later in January of this year.

Seoul Food on the Go plans more Korean comfort food shops

As Central Ohioans are exposed more Korean creations, including the culture's take on fried chicken and hot dogs, one local operator wants to raise the profile of Korean comfort food.

Dennis Kang started Seoul Food On The Go as a ghost kitchen operating near Grandview Heights. His first physical location, a fast-casual-style counter, opened at Bubbly Hall, a new food hall near New Albany.

He specializes in tteokbokki — rice cakes topped with a flavorful sauce and other ingredients. But “cakes” might give unfamiliar diners the wrong impression. There isn’t a great American analog. It’s sort of like a pillowy or doughy pasta, but even that isn’t accurate.

Aangan Indian Bistro has reopened!

https://www.columbusmonthly.com/story/lifestyle/food/2023/12/11/aangan-india-bistro-is-reopening-sweetgreen-coming-to-short-north/71878187007/

After trying many of the Indian restaurants around Columbus when we first moved here, we settled on Amul as the best. A few years ago we began to notice it wasn't quite as good as it used to be...turns out the original owners sold it, and the original owner was the chef. Recipes included ingredients, but apparently not the amounts of each.

The original owners started a new place, Aangan, in Crosswoods. The neighborhood had a worn-out 90's shopping area vibe to it, but the actual restaurant was quite nice inside with great service (something Indian places can be hit-or-miss about). You also had to really know it was there and go looking for it, and we had to deal with the 270/23/71 mess on the way home. We mostly got takeout (COVID) and only ate in a few times, but the food remained amazing. Sadly, it closed in the fall of 2022, posting on their website they were looking for a new location.

That location has been found at 5855 Frantz Road in Dublin. We went there over the weekend, and it's just as good as we remembered. Great food and great service, and the building is nice. It's a little further for us to drive, but in a lot of ways more accessible. I'm hoping they have better luck at this location, it's certainly a lot more visible with more people nearby.

I ordered my very favorite thing Murgh (Chicken) Tikka Saag, spice level 4/6. It was amazing.

Columbus is Getting its First Guy Fieri Restaurant

It’s a 55-year homecoming of sorts for chef, restaurateur and tv-host Guy Fieri. Born in the capital city in 1968, Fieri is back with plans to open his first restaurant in Columbus. The yet-to-be-named Italian concept will open at Eldorado Scioto Downs, 6000 S. High St. this spring.

“The first meal I ever had was in Columbus…I was born here!” said Fieri. “So, it’s a true homecoming to bring my latest concept to the area. Being from an Italian family, classic Italian American fare has always been a part of my life and I’m stoked to bring those real deal flavors to Scioto Downs.”

Fieri operates over a dozen other restaurant concepts, including other brands inside casinos, but Columbus will be the first Italian eatery in his portfolio.

The locally based pub chain made its move from its original location in the Tremont Center, which opened in 2000 as the company’s fourth restaurant, to a new space just up the street at Kingsdale.

The new restaurant opened Thursday at 3220 Tremont Road, on the ground floor of developer Continental’s Coventry senior living building. That building is on the site of the former Kingsdale Lazarus/Macy’s store.

Ray Ray's Hog Pit moves to Aardvark Beer & Wine in Linworth

Ray Ray’s Hog Pit is pulling in to a new location.

The restaurant and food truck operator is moving the truck it had at Flint Station just north of Worthington to Aardvark Wine & Beer at 2355 W. Dublin Granville Road in Linworth, just west of Worthington.

The new spot opens Friday.

“We're beyond excited to be able to partner with our good friends, Aardvark Wine & Beer, to help bring our Flint operation over to the Worthington/Linworth area,” Ray Ray’s said in its Facebook post. “Aardvark Wine & Beer runs one of the city's finest and tightly curated retail beverage programs, so to have a chance to provide our legendary BBQ to their lovely patrons was an instant no-brainer for our crew.”

Chop5 ready to expand beyond Central Ohio via franchising

Chop5, which opened its first restaurant in 2016 at 2044 Polaris Pkwy. and added a location at 1305 W. Lane Ave. last year, is ready to launch a franchise program to take the brand to new markets.

The fast-casual chopped salad and bowl concept hired franchise advisory company Concious Capital Growth to help set it up. It is advertising the program now and hopes to start interviews in the spring.

Downtown Columbus 'Dinner Dollars' program aims to get workers to stay downtown longer

A popular downtown Columbus program is back – but this time with a focus on happy hour.

The Columbus Downtown Development Corp. is launching "Dinner Dollars," a program that will distribute $10 vouchers to be used from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays at participating restaurants downtown.

CDDC started a "Lunch Bucks" program about a year and a half ago. Since then, the program has distributed more than 1,200 vouchers and been written up in The Washington Post. Through that program, downtown restaurants were reimbursed about $100,000, CDDC President Amy Taylor told me.

Katalina's picks Bexley for its next restaurant location

A new Katalina’s is coming to Bexley.

The popular Columbus breakfast and lunch destination is prepping its third café and restaurant, this one at 2741 E. Main St., a space that most recently was a Boston Market.

“I think it’s a perfect location for us,” owner Kathleen Day said. “I love the art deco look and it has a parking lot. We’re a neighborhood-focused business and I think we’re a good fit with the history of Bexley.”

A summer opening is the target.

CMR Renames Short North Restaurant, Del Mar to Open at Easton

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants will bring Del Mar to Easton, but not the Del Mar Central Ohioans are familiar with from the flagship Short North restaurant.

Del Mar Easton will resemble the fine-dining Del Mar of Naples, FL with its Mediterranean focus. Meanwhile, the Short North original has undergone a name change, becoming SoCal Kitchen + Bar.

“This name shift between the two culinary concepts just makes sense as both have established their own unique feel and guest fan base,” said David Miller, President and COO of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants (CMR).
