Guy Fieri brings personal touch to new Trattoria at Eldorado Scioto Downs

Guy Fieri’s Trattoria is personal.

It’s not just the first Columbus restaurant for the celebrity chef and beloved food personality who was born here. It's also his first foray into one of his favorite cuisines.

Despite 90 restaurants and two delivery-only brands across 18 concepts – standalones and locations in casinos, cruise ships, airports and sports stadiums – Fieri hasn’t had an Italian restaurant.

Cameron Mitchell to open new seafood restaurant in Easton on June 11

"The Columbus restaurant guru flipped his company's usual script for the opening of Del Mar, a Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant at Easton Town Center. Mitchell's 101st restaurant comes here by way of Naples, Florida, where it debuted in December of 2021.

Del Mar is the second southern seafood restaurant to expand into Columbus this spring. In April, Hank's Low Country Seafood & Raw Bar opened its first location outside Charleston, South Carolina, at High and Gay streets in Downtown.

The two restaurants take different directions with their menus, but both start with fresh fish and shellfish that shine no matter how they're prepared.

At Del Mar, those preparations include influences that span the Mediterranean, from Spain to the Middle East.

"We literally had this map on the kitchen table. We wanted to make sure we hit this swath of everything around the Mediterranean," Rough said. "We didn’t want just a Spanish restaurant. We didn’t want just an Italian restaurant. We didn’t want just a Greek restaurant. We peppered in all these little flavors, spices, cooking techniques, ingredients."

New Liberty Tavern opens this week on Polaris Parkway

The Liberty Tavern is a familiar local name, but the new iteration of that neighborhood restaurant will be doing a few things different.

The brand was founded in Powell in 2007 and acquired by local restauranteur George Tanchevski and his Orange Umbrella Restaurants in 2022.

The plan was to expand. That’s happening now as the second Liberty Tavern opens Wednesday at 2170 Polaris Parkway.

Does seem more like a destination-type ethnic food location.

Longstanding Taco Joint Jumps Across Broad Street

Cinco Tacos closed up shop this summer and reopened across the street with a new name and look.

The authentic Mexican eatery, now Cinco Más, opened June 10 at 10 W. Broad St. The restaurant was originally located across the street at 1 S. High St. from 2012 to late May of this year. Alongside the new name comes new menu items and a new logo.

Owner Francisco Garcia said the restaurant relocated because they were unable to acquire a lease longer than two years. They signed a five-year lease at the new location, with the option to resign again.

Ye's Asian Kitchen now open in Hilliard

Faced with possibly closing a restaurant, a local operator decided to change the concept instead.

Justin Ye, who owns five restaurants across Central Ohio, was nearing the end of his lease at 2469 Hilliard Rome Road, where he had operated Ye’s Asian Vegan for six years.

A combination of factors had him contemplating shuttering the space when the lease expired. Sales weren’t as strong as he would have liked and, with five restaurants (including one that just opened this spring), he felt stretched thin.

New Yemeni Coffee Shop Qahwah House Opens Downtown

Yemeni coffee is a hot trend popping up across Central Ohio, and Downtown now has its own shop getting in on the action. Qahwah House soft-launched last Friday at 189 East Main Street, inside the ground floor of the Harlow on Main apartment building.

“We considered taking the suburban route but thought, why not go big?” explained Qahwah House Senior Manager Mohamed Ahmed. “This location is located central to everything — apartment buildings, hospitals, colleges. Also, it is located in a ‘coffee desert’ part of Downtown, so we’d like to offer the community there a place close by.”

First Look: Teas Your Spirits Eatery Opens Brick-And-Mortar in Hilliard

Mayra Betances was looking for a way to relax during the pandemic, having no idea that four years later her new skill would lead to a storefront.

“The regular yoga and meditation was not working,” Betances said. “I figured since I love tea, I grew up drinking tea, maybe making tea will get me there. And what I found out was that the actual ritual of gathering the spices and the flowers and dehydrating the fruits, that process got me relaxed. It wasn’t so much the drinking of the tea, it was more the making of it.”

Teas Your Spirits Eatery celebrated its grand opening Thursday at 4 p.m. in Hilliard at 5286 Center St. Founded by Betances in 2020, Teas Your Spirits Eatery is owned by Betances and her husband Ernesto Villegas. It started as tea only and has since grown to include food and cocktails.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants opens Butcher & Rose downtown this weekend

Butcher & Rose is an inherent contrast – hard and soft – but that’s not the only juxtaposition within its walls.

It’s also past and present, both a return and an arrival.

Founder and CEO Cameron Mitchell said decades of experience and knowledge have gone into the restaurant, but the end result isn’t a moody and woody high-end steakhouse of yore, but what they hope is something new – a hearty selection of steaks (butcher), but in a softer (rose) environment. Familiar dishes with new techniques.

Guests soon can see for themselves as Cameron Mitchell Restaurant’s new downtown steakhouse opens at 155 E. Broad St. in the Preston Centre Saturday.

First Paris Baguette opens in Columbus, more on the way

South Korea-based French-Asian bakery chain Paris Baguette has opened its first location in Columbus.

The cafe and bakery opened this month at 3969 Merchants Row at Easton Town Center. Paris Baguette filled the 4,000-square-foot space left behind by the short-lived LemonShark Poké & Makai Grill.

LemonShark was open for exactly one year, closing in March 2022. The space had been vacant since.

Easton was high on franchisee Sridhar Talluri's wishlist to bring the French Baguette chain to Central Ohio. He said as the flagship mall in the city, it presented a unique opportunity to introduce a new brand to Columbus.
