Kamil's Uyghur Cuisine adds to Bethel Road's eclectic dining scene

Kamil Abdushukur is from China, but the food he makes and serves is not exactly what one thinks of when they think Chinese.

He and co-owner Arzumatt Kamil have opened Kamil’s Uyghur Cuisine inside the Dayou International Market food court at 875 Bethel Road.

They’re from the town of Urumqi in northwest China. Though in China, it’s an area with a different culture, religion and cuisine. Uyghurs are Turkic people and Abdushukur said their language and food is closer to that of countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

That looks like an entrance to a 1980’s suburban office building. What a strange street front for a new build, there is zero curb appeal to this.

I remember going past there a couple weeks back thinking "I thought this building was newer?" Even the concrete looks aged. Maybe time is catching up with me

Columbus’ first-ever Uyghur restaurant opened, specializing in hand-stretched noodles

"Kamil’s Uyghur Cuisine, which is now open, is located at 875 Bethel Road inside of Dayou International Market’s food court, offers a fusion of Middle Eastern, Chinese, and East Asian flavor. They specialize in thin hand-stretched noodles called “laghman,” a staple of many of these dishes.

Vegetarian options are available, and they also serve meat options that’s all halal – lamb, chicken, and beef, with no pork. Popular dishes include the sliced beef kebab, stir-fried in a cumin sauce, and the leghridaq, a special salad with mung bean jelly noodles topped with a house-made spicy dressing, sesame seeds, and cucumbers. Rice pilaf is the star of many of the dishes, as well as pearl noodles.

Along with those delicacies, customers can find soups, dumplings, rice-noodle dishes, and authentic teas including one made with their homemade yogurt."

The construction of a new food truck park in Hilliard is underway.

Tortilla Street Food owner Walter Eguez recently purchased an office and warehouse space at 4057 Grant St. in Hilliard and has plans to use it as both the restaurant’s headquarters and a food truck park called Tortilla Park. Construction on the park kicked off this week and Eguez said he expects it to take five to six months to finish.

The entire complex is two acres and is comprised of two buildings as well as the outside lot for the park. Eguez said Tortilla’s headquarters will be in the first building and the second building will include around four commercial spaces that tenants in the food industry can rent out.

More on Rosalita, Chef Josh Dalton's new Mexican restaurant opening downtown next year

Chef Josh Dalton said he has “a million concepts” in his mind.

One of those – Rosalita, the restaurateur's first go at Mexican cuisine – comes to life next year at 72-80 N. High St. in downtown Columbus.

While culinary creativity is certainly one driver of expansion, helping keep the entire business afloat is another.

Expansion is one way restaurants can help defray costs. Dalton was one of several restaurant operators to talk with Columbus Business First about how rising costs in recent years is forcing restaurants to adapt to make their bottom line work.

Black Kahawa Opens Full-Service Coffee Shop at Broad and High

"After serving coffee out of its patio trailer since this spring, Black Kahawa coffee roasters has finally opened its full-service coffee shop at Broad and High streets downtown.

The coffee roaster has converted the former Tim Horton’s space on the northeast corner of the intersection into a bright and cozy spot, with comfy seats, bar stools, and counters down the rear of the space.

Buckley had already developed a love for coffee as a home roaster before going to Tanzania, but he said it blossomed during his time in the African country. He explained the key differences between East African coffee and the coffee many American consumers may be familiar with.

“Some of the unique characteristics of East African coffee are very bold forward flavors,” Buckley said. “And some of that can be in the register of chocolate, or like a very creamy nuttiness. Other, especially like in Ethiopia, can be very floral or fruit based".

He said the move was made possible through the city’s Downtown Ground Floor Growth Initiative, a program passed by Columbus City Council in October to help small minority- and women-owned businesses move Downtown."

Looks like Groveport is getting a Chick-fil-a.

https://ca.columbus.gov/Permits/columbus/columbus.aspx

Project Description:

CFA / SR 33 & Hamilton Rd. FSU #05817 -
The project is for a new build, new install Chick-Fil-A restaurant located at 4015 South Hamilton Road, Groveport OH 43125. Parcel ID number is 530-193321.

I'm kind of surprised they are building here as opposed to somewhere on Gender Rd. The Hamilton/33 interchange will definitely need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Google puts that at where the Aldi is. Will it really be on the south side of the Sheetz where the huge mound of dirt is located? I don't see where else it could be with an address ending in an odd number (so not replacing the Frisch's). The huge mound of dirt is left over from the mini golf course that closed. I loved that complex when I was a kid. It also had go karts, a batting cage and an arcade.

Yes, that's where it will be. You can search the parcel number on the auditor website to see exactly where it will be. I'm somewhat skeptical of the location. It's going to create a lot of traffic being funneled into that small area. Hamilton really needs to be reconfigured.

The lights at Hamilton and Williams are too close together. They were planning on moving the Williams traffic through the warehouses and having it meet Hamilton in front of Eastland Vocational but it hasn't happened yet.

7Brew Coffee to open multiple locations across Columbus Region

7Brew Coffee, with locations in Hilliard, Lancaster and Zanesville, will open its latest new location on the north side of Columbus at 8380 N. High Street on Monday, December 23.

7Brew locations are purposefully and carefully chosen on corners with a stoplight, and their two drive-thru lanes, plus a kick out lane, offer a fast and convenient coffee experience, sans traffic build up. “The biggest advantage we have over our competition is the tablet ordering system. You don’t have to wait to get to the window – when it’s ready, the team brings it out to you, and can then get in the kickout lane,” Nadar explained. “We don’t block anyone from coming and going as they like.”

7Brews plans on bringing twenty other 7Brews to the Central Ohio region. Construction will soon begin at another Columbus location, at 1288 Georgesville Rd.

Johnstown Restaurant and Bar Gets a Revamp

The owner of Ghostwriter Public House knew she’d have to change things up if she wanted her business to last, and that’s exactly what she did.

Located in Johnstown at 49 ½ S. Main St., Ghostwriter Public House is a bar and restaurant launched by Denise Blankemeyer in 2019. The establishment closed for renovations in late December of last year and reopened to the public today. Some changes include a simplified menu, updated seating and a new dining system.

The rising cost of things like alcohol, maintenance and even the restaurant’s digital system known as a POS system led Blankemeyer to reevaluate the way Ghostwriter operates. The live fire grill the restaurant used to work with cost over $2,000 a month alone to run.

in the 70's I used to frequent a casual restaurant called Albert P. Gubbs (apparently for the last several decades the upscale Lindey's). I'm sure even back then I would comment on the prices (too high? reasonable?), but was still shocked to see this menu: $5.25 for a 14" "All The Way" pizza, and $2.25 for omelettes🤯 I just looked at Lindey's menu and omelettes, available only at lunch and one of the least expensive items, are $15!
