After extensive renovations, Prohibition Gastro Lounge opens in Powell

A more than 100-year-old building in Powell may have inspired Prohibition Gastro Lounge, but that same building kept the doors from opening months longer than ever intended.

"We thought it would be easy, but it became way more complex," co-owner Elton Sargent told me.

South Fourth Street between Rich and Main has become a lively downtown bar/restaurant area in recent years with the addition of Little Palace, El Camino, Dirty Frank's and the 16-Bit Barcade.  More about these and other surrounding developments posted HERE.  Now CU is reporting that the owners of The Olde Towne Tavern on Oak Street in OTE are planning a similar venue at 143 E. Main Street.

This location is in a block of renovated buildings near Fourth & Main.  143 E. Main Street is immediately west of the Hawk Galleries at the corner of Fourth & Main.  It is also across Main Street from the historic Hartman Hotel that was renovated into condos and from the Sidebar 122 restaurant that is located in the former Out on Main building at 122 E. Main Street.  Here's more about this from CU:

Olde Towne Tavern Owners Launching The Walrus Downtown

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

October 19, 2014 - 10:56 am

The South Fourth Street corner of Downtown has become its own mini-district in recent years with the success of multiple local bars and restaurants including 16-Bit, Dirty Frank’s, Little Palace, El Camino and Sidebar.  You can add another venue to the mix this winter when The Walrus opens its doors at 143 East Main Street.

The Walrus will be the third venture for Krista Sparks, Brad Hobbs and Kevin Burns, who opened The Olde Towne Tavern in 2012, followed by Corner Stone Craft Beer & Wine in 2013.

“About two years ago we were shown this location for a possible new bar and restaurant concept,” says Burns.  “The spot was previously an old nightclub, and with not much live music being offered Downtown, we decided to make a presence for the folks who live, work and play in the area.”

The downtown restaurant/bar cluster described above has another restaurant-type venue joining it.  The popular German Village restaurant Barcelona is opening a venue at 118 E. Barcelona Owner Opening Downtown Event Venue

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

October 23, 2014 - 12:27 pm

Business has been going well at Barcelona in German Village.  So well in fact, that the business is spinning off its special event hosting capabilities into a separate space at 118 East Main Street in Downtown Columbus, which will be known as Red Brick Occasions.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about for awhile,” says Barcelona Owner Scott Heimlich. “We have guests that ask about using our restaurant space for dinner parties of 30 to 50, and we can do semi-private divisions with curtains, but people really want a private space. So now if we can’t accommodate them in restaurant, we can provide them with an option that’s close and still under the same umbrella as Barcelona.”

(. . . )

Red Brick Occasions is moving into a former office space on Main Street, which Heimlich says requires minimal renovations prior to their grand opening on October 30th.

Cleveland Restaurateur Opening Condado Tacos in The Short North

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

November 6, 2014 - 12:00 pm

When Joe Kahn launched his build-your-own-tacos restaurant in the Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland in 2012, he had no idea it would prove to be so popular.  The restaurant, known as Barrio Tacos (not to be confused with the short-lived Barrio Tapas here in Columbus), opened a second location in Lakewood in 2013, but then Kahn sold the business to his partners and decided to bring the concept to a different market with a different name: Condado.

(. . .)

Kahn credits Columbus’ reputation as a test market city as the biggest draw for opening here.  He also said that the plan to launch Condado at 1227 North High Street (the former Circus Bar location) was also very intentional as he hopes to capture a mix of students and alumni from OSU as well as the residential and visitor demographics of The Short North.

Seems like nothing ever stays the same in the restaurant business, or the Short North restaurant scene.  Liz Lessner of the Columbus Food League announced that the Surly Girl Saloon will be closing after 10 years in the Short North.

This is the second Lessner/CFL spot to close in the Short North over the past year - Betty's Fine Food and Spirits closed last summer.  And this closure marks the third CFL restaurant to leave their organization over the past year - The Jury Room located downtown was sold in November and now operates under a different name.

In addition to these closures, Columbus Food League has opened three restaurants during this same time period: The Torpedo Room at the Gateway Film Center, a second Dirty Frank’s in Westgate, and The Chintz Room in downtown.  CFL continues to operate Tip Top, The Grass Skirt and the original Dirty Frank's, all located downtown.

I'm going to miss Surly Girl as well.  Good memories.  That said, of course, I haven't been there in years (only once since I moved to Akron).

After 78 years at the corner of Fifth & Grandview, Rife's Market closed up late last year.  Most people assumed it would be the site of another mixed-use/apartment development in the Grandview/5xNW area that is booming with new projects.  But it looks like the old corner building has at least one more retail use left in it.

In what is becoming a growing trend in Columbus, food truck Sweet Carrot is expanding into a brick-and-mortar location at the former Rife's Market at 1417 W. Fifth Avenue:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/sweet-carrot-restaurant-and-catering-moving-to-old-rifes-market-rw1
