Success for Bru Burger could mean sister concepts follow

The area’s first — but maybe not the last — Bru Burger Bar expects to open by spring 2018.

“We’ve been looking long and hard at Columbus for awhile,” founder Mike Cunningham told me Tuesday. “We looked downtown. We looked on the fringes of the Short North, but couldn’t find a space we liked.”

:wtf: (*ColDay Note* In ALL of downtown, they couldn't find a space they liked?  I don't believe that for a second)

Seems to be doing decent. I have a buddy that works for the company that redid the place. He said the opening of Columbus brewing has helped push some more traffic.

Generally you don't see restaurants cross-shop DT and Polaris for locations, no.

I'm dreaming again but since Columbus is a microcosm of the U.S. and downtown is right in the center, I'd like to see a retail and restaurant district in the heart of downtown where space is leased to large chains that are testing new concept stores. I wouldn't even care if the city had to hire people to reach out to the companies, offer to subsidize the operation and  pay their rent. Downtown desperately needs destinations worth going to after 5pm and I feel that would be a major regional draw. Whether it's another Abercrombie test store, that new Taco Bell concept, whatever. Unfortunately, concept stores go to Easton but this is something that would distinguish downtown and give people a unique experience. It would do wonders for branding  (every promotional video I've seen for downtown is beyond pathetic) and it would give folks at Experience Columbus something to do and an actual direction to go in.

It's a really crappy situation. Most restaurants downtown are only open for lunch; people go to SN, Arena District and German Village for dinner. There's a huge lunch crowd due to all of the office buildings but since all those government workers have half hour lunch breaks and people generally won't eat out for lunch unless they find something under $7, it's mostly just boring fast food that operates for half of a day since they make almost all of their revenue between 12-1pm. If Nationwide Arena and Crew Stadium were located downtown you'd probably see a lot more interest in those spaces.

Half-hour lunches are murderous to local economies.

Northstar Cafe’s Westerville Location Now Open

Northstar has opened in Westerville, making it the fifth location for the Short North original. The new spot, in the uptown area at 109 S. State Street, aims to be a reflection of the neighborhood’s history.

Plans for the new location started back in 2014, when Northstar first acquired the site from the city. It originally contained the Kyoto Tea House and Shinto Shrine, which owner Kevin Malhame said inspired various features of the new store’s design. A mosaic, displayed in the former Tea House, is set into the outer wall at the back of the restaurant, and Shou Sugi Ban, a charred wood used in old Japanese temples, was incorporated into the siding.

I'm working at my Dayton store today. So far we have one yes vote and one no vote on Cassanos on UO. I'm thinking of having it delivered. What is there to like or not like about it?

For me, it's a very salty crust and I can't stand it.  Try it and see if you like it.  I much prefer Marion's.

And as for Rapid Fired, it's not bad as long as you go in knowing it's a "Chipotle, but for Pizza" chain. I'd probably rather get it over most big national brands FWIW.

New Event Space, Bar and Eatery Opens at the Gateway in May

The restaurant group who opened The Crest Gastropub, Alchemy and The Market Italian Village have come together to create another concept. Trism, an event space, bar and eatery is set to open in May at the Gateway.

The purpose of the space is unlike many that go into the University District. Co-owner Abed Alshahal said that while they’ll be catering to the student population, that isn’t their main focus. Rather, they’re hoping Trism can draw people in from the rest of the city who usually avoid the campus area.

The Short North is Getting a Deli this Month

When Whit’s Frozen Custard vacated their Short North store, neighboring business owner Tom Kincaid saw an opportunity. Kincaid, who purchased House Beer back in December, had been considering a remodel to add room for a House Beer kitchen. Instead, he’ll be opening a separate business, Short North Deli, next door.

A first-time business owner and Delaware resident, Kincaid is no stranger to the management world. In the 90s he ran night clubs, bars and restaurants all over the States. More recently, he spent 13 years at GFS as the prepared foods manager.

New Restaurant ‘Trillium’ Will Replace Alana’s Food and Wine This Summer

When opening a restaurant that’s supposed to replace a longstanding favorite, like Alana’s Food and Wine, the first priority is maintaining the standards that people have grown used to over the last 18 years. Trillium, planned to open this summer in the space Alana’s called home, is set by co-owners Bradley Balch and Michael Kulikowski to be comparable in quality while also creating its own identity, niche and legacy.

“We know that expectations are going to be high, but we want to set ourselves apart for that,” Balch said. “So we’re hoping that after year one, year two, year three, people recognize us as Trillium, and they aren’t just saying ‘Oh, the old Alana’s.’”

Texas-Based Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is Coming to the Old Downtown Japanese Steak House Space

The lease for the building once occupied by the Downtown Japanese Steak House has been signed by Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, a Texas-based fast-casual taco joint and bar.

The business’ longtime home will transform pretty drastically soon, as the bright colors, subway tile and corrugated metal of Fuzzy’s trademark style cover its interior.
