What better fit for Dublin’s Bridge Park development than an Irish pub?

Fado will open its second Central Ohio restaurant and bar in the spring in a 5,700-square-foot space at 6652 Riverside Dr.

Duck Donuts Will Get Second Columbus Location by End of Year

Duck Donuts will get a second Columbus location before the year is out. The popular North Carolina-based donut shop debuted in Ohio with a Westerville location last December, and franchisees Brad Hobbs and partners are ready to double up with a Dublin location.

Hobbs and his business partners Darren Shutler, Krista Sparks and Kevin Burns opened the first local franchise in Westerville, after family members of Hobbs came back from their Outer Banks vacation with rave reviews. Hearing about the product and the adoration it inspired, the group brought it north to Ohio, enlisting the help of family in Westerville to run it.

Opening Date Revealed for Middle West Spirits’ Bar and Restaurant

It’s likely you’ll start seeing more distilleries taking the restaurant route. In November, a law finally passed that dissolved antiquated regulations and allowed distillers to create their equivalent of a brewpub. Several local distillers were involved in that legislative process, including Ryan Lang, head distiller and co-owner of Middle West Spirits, Columbus’ newest distillery-turned-bar.

After several years of planning, Middle West Spirits announced the grand opening date for their Service Bar. In October, the Short North bar and expanded production facility will be open for tours, tastings, and dinner service.

Cravings Cafe Reopens Downtown on Monday

After two years without a home, Cravings Cafe will reopen on Monday, September 25 at their new location Downtown, in the space that was once Saigon Palace. Not much has changed with the restaurant since their closure in 2015, but co-owner Lindsay Tewanger expects things to look a little different as they occupy a bigger space and serve a new crowd.

“When we were over on 3rd, we were mostly a weekend business. Our big days were Saturday and Sunday,” Tewanger said. “Down here, I think it’s going to be the complete opposite.”

Celebrity chef to lead Chipotle's Lancaster burger joint

freestandingsignonbluesky*100xx808-808-0-272.jpg

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. is turning to a famous hand to tweak its burger brand.

The Denver-based restaurant company on Tuesday said celebrity chef Richard Blais will run its Tasty Made fast-casual burger joint. The first and only site for that brand opened in Lancaster last year.

“There is no more iconic fast-food than burgers and I have always thought that there is a way to do them on a really big scale without compromising the quality of the food or the overall restaurant experience,” Blais said in a release.

Phatt Taco Rebranding, Reopening in Westerville

Phatt Taco is making a comeback later this year. After several locations throughout the city, owner Jose Becerra believes he’s found the perfect spot to run his business seven days of the week. Phatt Taco will reopen in Westerville, eventually rebranding (for the second time) to “Tostadalicious.”

The process started almost a year ago, when Becerra’s three-year lease was up at 50 N. High St. Downtown. It was never the perfect fit for Phatt Taco. With no liquor license, they had a hard time attracting a dinner crowd. Weekends were even worse.

Their location on Parsons has operated as “cafe-forward” for the last three years, offering bowls, sandwiches, salads, smoothies and juices. “We’ve been looking for An alchemy location for a long time now,” said co-owner Abed Alshahal. “We wanted to find the right place and the right neighborhood, something to really allow us to show some additional layers of the brand that we’re not really able to show down at Parsons.”

Bake Me Happy Opens Coffee Shop This Saturday

Merion Village’s gluten-free wholesale bakery Bake Me Happy is going retail. This weekend they’ll open their coffee shop, which occupies the space once home to T.Y. Fine Furnishings, at 106 E. Moler St.

Since it opened in 2014, Bake Me Happy has largely focused on special orders, opening to the public for just a few hours each week for retail purposes. Customers would come, grab their food, and, due to lack of seating, immediately leave the building. With the new expanded space and some colorful, Bake Me Happy-style seating, customers will now be able to sit down with their purchased items and get some local coffee from Ramble, Thunderkiss or Stauf’s to go with it.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop Now Open Downtown

Breakfast taco lovers — and taco lovers in general — now have a place to go all day. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is now open Downtown in the space vacated by Japanese Steak House last year. The taco shop opens its doors at 6:30 a.m. every weekday for breakfast, but keeps the service going all day, through lunch and dinner.

The old Japanese Steak House aesthetic has been done over with Fuzzy’s’ colorful style. The large space is full of tables that sit beyond the ordering counter-slash bar. For service, guests can order fast casual-style at the counter and choose a seat. At the sound of the buzzer, the food can be found at the pickup window on a cafeteria tray.

The Olde Oak Will Bring Southwestern Flair to Parsons

Despite construction in the area, 39 Below owner Carolyn Maloney is ready to open her second business on Parsons Avenue. The Olde Oak, a bar-restaurant with southwest flair, will open at the end of the month. The concept was a collaborative effort, conceptualized by local artist Paul Giovis and executed by Maloney and local chef Lara Ranallo.

“Paul Giovis created a giant mural inside [the building], and that was actually his concept,” Maloney said. “Once we got involved with it, we started to fall in love with the concept, and I brought on the chef that made the menu for Surly Girl — Lara Ranallo.”

Kilwins, a franchise started by two local entrepreneurs, Stephanie Malas and her husband Ernie Malas, will make its Central Ohio debut this Friday, December 8. The chocolate and ice cream shop has more than 100 other locations nationwide. This one in Dublin will be Kilwins’ second in Ohio.

“We first discovered Kilwins probably 15 years ago,” said Stephanie Malas, Kilwins co-owner. “My family vacations a lot in Fort Lauderdale. My husband and I would take the kids there. I just remember we were really enticed by the sweet smell of waffle cone.”

Swensons update: City votes on Sawmill site

Though Swensons Drive-In owners aren't talking, the city of Columbus has had its say.

As first reported by Columbus Business First, the Akron-based chain has its sights on a Central Ohio spot, according to documents filed with the city. It appears to be considering 7490 Sawmill Road near Dublin as its first Columbus-area restaurant.

Columbus City Council Monday night approved the development plan for that site, including allowing for 75 parking spaces despite a 69-space requirement for that property.

Short North getting a new restaurant and rooftop bar

A Cleveland restaurateur is bringing a pair of ventures to the Short North.

Crawford Hoying announced on Monday that TownHall and a still-to-be-named second restaurant will be part of its development at 800 N. High St. in the popular Columbus neighborhood.

That site is the former Haiku restaurant site, which closed in 2016. Also part of the project is a 116-room Moxy Hotel by Marriott and 46,000 square feet of Class A office space.
